Noodles went in for her spay operation this morning to remove her girly bits and the large ovarian cysts she had developed.

After a slightly tearful drop off and a rather stressful morning at work, I rang at 1.30pm to be told she had woken up very quickly, was moving about slowly, and enjoying some veg and also some dandelions the vet nurses had picked for her and Whiskey (Whisks was in to have her urine monitored and keep Noodles company, but refused to pee when needed all day...typical lol) and I could pick her up this evening.

I was also told Ann (my vet) had kept the cysts for me to see (she knows I am fascinated by these things)

So at 6pm I was presented with the below:

Noodles-cysts.jpg

...just a bit big!

The combined weight of both cysts was around 300g, which was about a quarter of her bodyweight. The cysts grew quite rapidly over a few weeks, and while her symptoms responded well to hormone injections, Ann and I decided we needed to get them out while she was in good enough general health to recover from the op. The dark one was the left cyst, this did have blood in it hence the colour but we have decided not to send them off for testing as everything is out now. The cysts obviously mask her actual ovaries as they are so big. The greyish purple stems coming off these are the sacks baby piggies would live in if a pig were pregnant, and then you have the tubes to the vagina. I find this incredibly fascinating and wish I had seen the boys balls as well, lol.

Noodles is doing very well, has not eaten much but that's to be expected, I am syringe feeding as and when but being a bossy, self sufficient pig she isn't impressed by this and would rather eat Excel herbage lol. Her wound is equally impressive, when it has healed a bit more I will get a pic but at the moment she isn't up to it. Whiskey has stayed with her and is being a good nurse pig, apart from wheeking all the way through Eastenders rolleyes

I have a week off work to keep an eye on her, hence being up at 3am! Am hopeful she will make a full and speedy recovery :)

How interesting like you it is helpful to see things like this as it broadens a piggy owners knowledge that bit more. Poor Noodles bet she will be relieved once her soreness and scar has healed if not a bit lighter. Sending her strong healing thoughts and thank heavens she has such a caring owner and fab vet.

Gosh that poor little one..........no wonder she was uncomfortable!

What were her signs, had she been gaining weight as well? Did her sides look like she was pregnant?

I am shocked that such huge cysts could be in a little guinea pig. Thank goodness they are out now and she can recover.

Wow - they cysts are some size glad Noodles is doing well. Sending healing vibes for a quick recovery! x

Oh wow, that's why we learn about everything on this forum!

An eye opener to look at how it looks like :) ThanksQ for sharing and I do hope Noodle will recover soon!

Blimey! Poor Noodles! Hope she makes a quick and full recovery. So cute that Whiskey is taking care of her.

They are certainly HUGE!

I am glad that Noodles has come through the op with having such biggies (my Fflur sadly didn't, but she was a very small girl) and I wish her all the best for a good recovery!

Thank you Glynis and girls x

Noodles basically had very few if any symptoms, which is why we didn't notice them at first. She has always been decidedly pear shaped even as a young piggy, apparently rexs can be so, I'm not sure, anyway, so when she was I assume developing these monsters we didn't really notice as her shape was not all that different. She has also always been heavier than Whiskey and to be honest didn't gain much weight - as the cysts were growing but her bodyweight was shrinking simultaneously. A couple of months ago she started loosing hair on no, not her flanks, but her head and back and the typical lice/mite V shape, so we went to the vet for this, Ann said hmm she looks a lot more pear shaped than usual, we did a urine sample a her hormones were all over the shop. An initial hormone jab did shrink them a bit but then they came back with a vengeance, so we decided while the jab had given her more oomph to recover well, let's get them out.

Whiskey also has a very small cyst but has had all the classic symptoms, hair loss on flanks, crusty nipples, being stroppy etc. so was treated with the jab much earlier on and will probably have another soon to halt the growth. She is in herself not as strong as Noodles and has other health issues that would affect her chances so we have already decided she won't be operated on.

This is exactly the reason I'm pro spay....

Glad Noodles is doing well :)

It has definitely made me think again about prevention rather than cure. It's the aftercare that's important rather than the op as long as your vet knows what they are up to, Ann said she often keeps them in overnight (she knows I know one end of a syringe from the other though so I was allowed them home, I also think Whiskey's incessant wheeking put her off lol)

Blimey! Poor Noodles! Hope she makes a quick and full recovery. So cute that Whiskey is taking care of her.

Whisks is being fantastic, am very proud of her calming down and taking care of Noodles. She does keep trying to get at the Critical Care though...have been giving her a bit when Noodles has finished!

Thank you, I'm sorry Fflur didn't make it from the op - it was a very hard decision to go for it and there was a real possibility, and still is, things can go wrong, so I am feeling very lucky at the moment.

Oh my goodness! Poor little thing, I am glad that Noodles is doing well after the op though.

Thanks for posting this, it's very interesting!

I have found this very interesting, thanks for the very informative updates as well!

That is so lovely of Whisky to look after Noodle x)x)
cute that she has a bit of the CC too :))
That's a great way of making her feel part of the looking after of her mate Noodle WELL DONE LOVE ! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hope noodle is feeling better and back to normal self soon. I have been through a spay with one of my girls in the past, due to ovarian cysts, never got to see the cysts as the vet said they burst on removal of them. I bet she looks half the piggie she was before the op eh.

Noodles had her post op check up today, Ann is very pleased with her progress. We have popped her on a low dose of Septrin as she went a bit snuffly, Ann did say this could happen, something to do with the GA. She is as bad as Whiskey and tries to nom all the Septrin at once, I think I am going to have to give them small pieces of banana when they are better as they seem to be addicted...

So far only one drop of metacam needed, she is fed up of CC now and when I tried to give her some wriggled and wriggled, so I put her back in the cage and she went straight to the bowl and started nomming pellets as if to say 'see, look, I am eating, take that stuff away' lol

I have put a bowl of water in as well as the drip bottle as she wasn't drinking loads, so far both girls have drunk from it and had small improptu baths in it rolleyes

Glynis, you are more than welcome for the info and updates. I don't like to post anything on here if I am unsure of it, but when I have an experience like this, I do try and post as much as I can of my own experience to help anyone else who may be facing it.

Had a stupid teary moment with them both earlier as Whiskey came and gave me kisses as she has done since a baby, then Noodles did it too - she never normally does - I am so so grateful we have been so lucky and hope it continues.

thats totally fascinating...
hows poor little noodles doing now...?
hope shes recovering well....x
I'm curious...
i have been trying to get coco in for a scan on her ovaries and i have been told by 3 different vets that the untasound scanners they have are too stong and "they will just pick up the table underneath the pig"....
how did you go about getting a diagnosis...
and if noodles had a scan could i have the details of your vet please...
x

No scan required Claire, when she finally started the hairloss Ann felt her and could easily feel the cysts as they were quite a size - just disguised by the fact she had always been an odd shape.

Thinking back we didn't do her urine then, we did it later to check there was no blood to indicate other problems before operating...had so many pigs doing urine samples lately I forget who peed when...

Does Coco have cysty symptoms? My vet is Ann O'Meara nee Taylor, studied with Peter Guerny for years and is brilliant, I was recommended her by Jenny at Crawley GPR and then one of my boarding clients and since she rightly diagnosed Whiskey's hairloss as hormonal, not mites, have never looked back.

Mind you she could go on holiday to the Maldives with the amount I have spent...

I'm pretty convinced she has cysts after reading up on everything...

i know how you feel about spending a small fortune... not long paid my dad back after £450 worth of vet bills...
lol....
x
p.s. excuse the p jamas....:)

That hair loss is not at all dissimilar to Whiskey's who had all the classic symptoms...it is a much much cleaner hair loss than mites or fungal, literally as if the hair has just dropped out (yet you never find it...)

That shape would worry me too. A good vet should be able to feel cysts, Whiskey has a small one in there somewhere, can't see it at all and all symptoms have gone yet Ann still felt it and is monitoring it.

How old is your girly?

thats exactly it...!... her hair loss has recently got worse... that photo is about 2 weeks old...

i have no idea how old she is but i would hazzard a guess around 3 years old...
she has been bred back to back for all of her life so she generally give the appearence of an older piggie... and that teamed up with being lathargic and grumpy everyone thinks shes really old...
x

Grumpiness could be her hormones, Whiskey was horrible when she was bad. Noodles was her usual laid back self but slightly more irritable.

I would get a second opinion from someone more cavy savvy if you can.xx

was starting to think i was becoming a bit of a piggie hypochondriact....!
lol...
fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for noodles...
