Dental Not eating after dental

He doesnt chew as vigorously as usual and I need to push small bits into his mouth and keep stimulating him to chew but it goes in! I am keeping him on his own overnight so I can see poo production

We have never found a vet who can do guinea pig dentals correctly apart from the Maddock’s at the Cat and Rabbit, that’s why we travel to Northampton. Their teeth are quite different from rabbits which are flat whereas GP teeth are slightly angled, vets often over trim/file or not get the angle correct as well as leaving jagged edges too. We have had very costly GA dentals from other local vets which actually made his teeth far worse than the original problem 🙁

Write down all stuff that you need to tell Simon/Kim (like what @Free Ranger said above) and the questions you want to ask so you won't forget it. Since the pandemic started, you are not allowed to get inside the practice with your piggy. They will call you on your phone when it's your piggy's turn.

Good luck with your piggy tomorrow (or whenever you get the appointment. Simon & Kim are the best.

We always leave a hand written note taped to the carrier so Simon can read the message, then he will call after the procedure is done and you can ask questions and discuss any further treatment or repeat prescriptions
It’s always good to write a note with your piggies problems, previous treatment and history etc it helps the vet

And if you're taking both in the carrier for company on the journey don't forget to label which one is the patient! Everything crossed for you x

I will take just him as last time I took them both they had a big fight and I had to tip them out on the waiting room floor to separate them🙄 never fought since!

They ended up having treatment for damaged ears and they weren't even there for that!

UPDATE

we have been, he's had his dental (again) kim said the very back teeth hadn't been touched so mouth couldn't close properly he also had ulcers which were filled with rotten food and bits of tooth,( why didnt the first vet see any of this, they said there was a smell in his mouth which is usually rotting impacted food?)
He needs to start eating so need to poke bits in his mouth and has much higher level of metacam.
So glad I took him he was never going to get over this, i knew it was teeth and nothing else, kim said same, he is bright in himself.
Thankyou all for you recommendation, I would have been looking at euthanasia otherwise

Glad you sorted it out. I found Cat & Rabbit in 2015 because of this forum too. They are amazing vets!

Fingers crossed your piggy would recover soon. 😊

Aw, poor lad, glad you got him to see Kim, he sounds just like what the local vet left my Ted in (A right old mess!). They are the best and most experienced vets when it comes to guinea pig dentals. They have years of experience and the right tools for the job too.
Now you must encourage him to eat little bits of food he likes while supporting him with a top up of mushed pellets. Try offer him porridge oats, most piggies will eat them and they will build him back up too. My Ted would eat a little grass and beetroot sticks out of Bistro salad bags. His mouth will be a bit sore for a few days and he will have lost his confidence eating too. Weigh him daily, that will give you an idea if he is getting enough food inside him.
So pleased you went and it’s such be a big relief knowing what was the problem x

Do you give them dry porridge oats? He is not interested yet so I have given him higher dose of metacam and will try later

So glad you were able to get him seen today and find out exactly what was wrong. Hope his mouth heals up quickly and he starts eating normally soon, sending healing vibes 😍

Thanks should I expect he may not be too interested tonight? Kim did say vital to get him chewing he goes back in 2 weeks

Yes he may not feel up to much tonight so you must syringe feed him and weigh him daily so you can ensure you’re getting enough syringe feed into him, while encouraging him to eat for himself.

Eating grass by himself now and others things as well when I'm not looking he feels fuller, he does find it difficult to pick up food as incisors were taken down short but vet said they will grow back quickly.
A bit different to a week ago!
Aw great news, his incisors will grow back quickly, that’s one of the common mistakes that most vets make, guinea pigs have long incisors compared to rabbits.
