Really sorry for your troubles! the council,i'm sure that they should by law, find you a home and not over crowded, even if association house, you pay say £200 they pay the rest,is there a local MP that you could ask for help! can't your "father-in-law" just wait a month, can you not see if legally you could stay in the house..

I know a friend who had a similar problem. They just got a letter from the landlord stating they were being evicted and needed a place to stay. Have you got a letter to them? I'm sure they have to help you. They cant just say no.

I'm really sorry to hear of your problems - i have been there myself and know how incredibley unsympathetic the local councils can be. In my case my landlord needed the house back for his own family to live in and even though he contacted the council on my behalf they said there was nothing they could do til I was actually homeless. At the time my kids were 3 and 9 so you can imagine the state I was in.
Citizens advice bureau can be quite helpful in letting you know what you are entitled to. Chances are you might get some help towards rent even if you are both working. Have you tried contacting your local housing associations yourself? Or your neighbouring local councils to see what houses they have available? Horrible as it all seems at the moment you will get through it eventually.
