Hi,
We have recently got 2 Guinea pigs, we were told they are around 7/8 weeks old. We have now had them a week, and they’re not very active at all, stay hiding in a tunnel or in the bed unless we get them out. They are eating but not as much as I thought they would, from what I’d read before we got them.

i was just wondering how active a baby Guinea should be? Should I be concerned, I’m starting to get a bit worried now.

Thanks

:wel:

Baby piggies are very active, but given they’ve only been with you for a week, their behaviour from your description is what I would expect. They are likely scared at present. It can take weeks for them to settle in and realise they are safe. It’s best to cover their cage with a blanket and leave them without handling them to settle in - only feeding and cleaning their cage. After that, offer food from your hand while they are in the cage. They will be less frightened in time, but as prey animals, it is normal for this to take weeks to months to occur. One of mine was settled within six weeks but it took the other a year and a half before he trusted me.

Put their hay nearby so they don’t have to come out for to get access to it. They are likely coming out overnight when they feel safer.

:agr: They are probably very scared as they are youngsters and have not long been in your home. If you cover over one end of their cage and make sure they have access to hay, pellets, veg and water close to their hidey you will find that they will gain in confidence and come out more. They do take a while to settle in their new home.

:wel: and I totally agree with the advice you have been given above. Takes time to build their confidence. Congrats on your new additions!

I hope they settle in soon and you will be amazed how different they behave. 😍

Thank you so much, this all makes absolute sense. I feel so much better now. Looking forward to watching their characters grow 😃
