I need to try to find out how to re home two adult guinea pigs, I've tried the local rescue but they cannot take in older piggies.

The boys are both 5 and a half and live in separate cages because they like the company but the bonding really didn't go well! They're so well behaved that the cage doors haven't been closed all year, love them to bits and gutted that we can't take them with us to our new home as the landlord has flatly said no.

Worst thing is I've only got a maximum of 10 days to sort this out...

Does anyone have ideas?

I hate asking :(

Just had a smile looking back at the first picture I posted on here of them and then realised they're actually 6 and a bit!

would the landlord have to know? seems a shame to have to rehome them at their age :(

@SirMinter I kept my pigs in my last home when landlord said no pets and he didn't know. The landlord never come to visit but even if he did they can't just turn up, you would be given notice so they would be easy to hide

It's really tempting but I have a feeling the landlord will visit as it's their home until end of this week (they've upgraded and now renting this house to us).

Their first tie being a landlord aswell so think they'll be a bit attached

boarding until the house is officially yours? and then move them in. i wouldn't normally recommend being dishonest but if it's a choice between that and losing the pets.. well, i'd not lose my pets for anything.

you could ask once more and offer an additional bond for them if possible, if you haven't already.

Only worry would be is I have no idea where i'd hide all the food and two cages lol.

Just emailed the estate agent asking if it'll be alright

Could you say you are housing the food and cages for a friend? Or you could put some covers like a fleece throw over it :hmm:

Yup but it's tiny so hardly fits the cages..

Just going to be honest and ask if we can have them, reading the contract if they found out we had them we could be made to leave within 2 months and that'll cause a nightmare for the new job.

Fingers crossed!

Hope you find a way around it. I could kind of understand a landlord not wanting pets like a dog as it could chew and cause damage but they're cute little guinea pigs and live in a cage

hope you can work something out. just be honest, say you're very upset about it, offer the extra bond, and then see what happens. sounds mean but say they are no bother because they are older now and just potter about and sleep, you keep them caged and kept clean and tidy etc.

some landlords just won't budge when it comes to pets though i know, so if it comes to it then hopefully someone can help with taking them in. good luck :)

Good luck! I've never understood why people won't allow small pets, it's getting increasingly worse. I'd bet that all these landlords that won't allow them have never had small animals so know little about them and don't understand the bond and love you have with them. It would be like telling someone they have to give up their kids for me!

I really feel for you. I couldn't imagine having to give up any of my pets. Maybe if needed @Stewybus could find someone to piggy train them somewhere. I would take in every needy pig in a heartbeat but I would need to win the lottery first.

There is such a thing as a "pet deposit". Perhaps in your letter you could offer to pay a deposit in order to keep them, that would cover any un-repaired damages caused when/if you move out. Being guinea pigs, it is quite unlikely that there would be any damages, so you'd just get the money back. But it just offers your landlord a bit of security.

Also, we are not supposed to keep pets in our block of flats, but the guy 2 floors down from me has a Labrador. I asked him about it, and he said he got his doctor to write a letter to the management agency to say that it is a companion dog, and that his mental health is totally reliant upon this dog lol. The agency cannot disagree with this. So..... there's another route you could go down?

I don't have much experience in renting but I just want to say good luck in whatever you decide to do.

If a rescue can take them ten The Piggy Train would definitely try to get them there for you. I can't understand rescues who won't take older piggies, it sounds more financial than caring to me. If I had space I would take them now. A shame you have such a short time to move them. Have you got any family or friends who could look after them whuile a space is found for them. I could possibly have space at the end of the month but I'll need to rehome a few piggies first x

I would find out what their concerns are. If it's carpets being dirty or similar just put into the contract that all carpets and flooring/furniture will be professionally cleaned when you leave. If you understand what the issue is then hopefully can address it? My husband is a letting agent and most landlords accept this as a way forward.

I'm a landlord and reasonable notice has to be given of a visit (24 hours minimum) and even then they can't enter without your permission unless there is an emergency. I can't think why a landlord would do an inspection so early into a tenancy, I only did yearly ones but the letting agent that is now in charge starts on quarterly visits.

I specifically say no pets on my tenancy as some tenants would leave the house wrecked, smelly and covered in urine. However I have made it clear to the letting agent to consult me if anyone asks because it depends on the type of pet. If someone wants to keep outdoor pets or piggies, hamsters etc where they live in a cage then I would accept that so long as they had the carpet in the animal room professionally cleaned when they left.

By keeping pets without permission please bear in mind that you would be breaching your tenancy and leaving yourself open to eviction

From some of the things I see on TV they don't need pets to do that to a house aha. I would say that dogs and cats might need a judgement on but tbh idk anyone who would wanna live day to day in a house soiled by animal waste. I mean, pets can have their accidents but so do kids (even more than pets lol). I understand people don't want damage to their properties but other than dogs and cats (and they don't all do it) there isn't a great deal of risk or damage from say piggies, lizards and snakes etc.

But idk, up to personal choice I guess but I wish there were more animal lovers renting out properties lol. I'd never move into a place that wouldn't allow animals unless I had no choice. But I could just stay at mums XD

I agree, there's a lack of landlords that accept pets. I rent my house through a friend so I'm allowed pets but I have a feeling she is wanting to sell the house soon and I have no idea where I would go with my pigs and a dog (more so the dog) but I would never ever rehome them

I got around the "no pets policy" on my current rental... My piggies are listed as outdoor piggies only, so on inspection days, they hide outside and all indoor traces are hidden. My previous rental had no piggies what so ever... We just put the hutch and piggies in the car and my partner drove them around until the agent had gone.

I was going to say what about housing them outdoors, they aren't IN the property then, just in the garden but it would mean you making sure the cage was properly insulated for winter and such.

Yes that's the problem, tbh I wanna just save for a deposit on a place which may take forever but at least there are no landlords to hate your pets XD

Do you say that the pets you had were specifically guinea pigs rather than dogs/cats?

When we moved into our house, even though I had read the 'no pets' clause on the contract, I didn't give it two thoughts, but then we moved in, and I panicked when I remembered the No Pets, so I rang my new landlady, and she was fine about guinea pigs. She just wouldn't allow dogs or cats.

If they ever were coming round to the property, could you arrange for them to go to someone, just til the landlord went? If I were near you, I'd take them in for a day or two to avoid your landlord, but I'm up north.

I was quite lucky with all the properties i viewed everyone was happy to accept the guinea pigs as long as they were caged.

Our agreement with our current landlord is that we payed £100 damage deposit (£50 per pig) on top of our normal deposit and then agree to have the house professionally fumigated specifically for fleas before we leave.

Hope that your landlord will be as flexible.

I had this issue and to be honest I just kept it quiet until I realised the lady above had two small dogs and so I spoke to the landlord and he admitted he didn't mind as long as carpets were cleaned when we left. They often say no pets because of they allow pets then someone could move in with a pack of huge alsations or labs and destroy the place. Caged pets and small dogs are usually accepted and they sometimes if funny will request a pet deposit. Good luck with it all xx

Haha yes absolutely don't need pets for that! My last tenants left bright orange and bright yellow paintwork for me to cover over (and now I'm rethinking my generosity on what I allow tenants to do in the property as a result) and the ones before that liked to have their haircut in the garden so I had handfuls of human hair to pick up... it was so very grim. Piggies free roaming would be an issue for me as wee would seep into carpet and underlay but caged animals I wouldn't have a problem with but I leave that up to a tenant to approach me and ask first. I rented a property just before I brought the house to live in and my landlord was happy for me to have the piggies in a cage so I just built a ginormous C&C for them :)
