I am trying to see what an appropriate weight is for my pig. He is two years old and full grown at 1043grams. I have him weighed at the vet office every time he gets a nail trim (every other month). His weight slight spiked this last trim and I'm worried about his health. I may be giving him too many pellets a day. I started to cut back but he his very angry about it. He has squeaked and flipped over his bowl to show his disapproval. I'm afraid I'm starving him but I'm limiting his pellets to 1/8 cup a day. He gets unlimited hay and veggies. In addition, his cage is 2 meter x 1 meter in dimension. How do I know if a diet is necessary? I read somewhere online that I should be able to palate his ribs with ease. Is this true? I can feel Simba's ribs but real have to feel around for them. Is he obese?

He's lighter than both my adult sows who are around 1140g . My vet told me they were obese but after doing my research and from information on here I know that's not quite the case. Piggies can differ greatly in weight. My two are around 3-4 years old, they get 10g of pellets a day, a small handful of veg each a day and unlimited hay.

He looks and sounds fine to me! Doesnt sound like you are over feeding at all and as long as he eats mostly hay he should be fine :-) my crunchie was 1100g in her prime, she is now 5 years old and sits at around 1000-1030g. She was ill and hasnt went back to her full weight since, but seems back to full health now. My 18 month old sow weighs 1100g and vet says her weight is fine too x

Definitely not obese at all for a boar.
My three boars are
1246 - hes the heaviest
1000
1037

So yours is right on point :)

Hi and welcome

That is a perfectly normal adult weight. Guinea pigs have a very wide range of weight/sizes, so any charts are pretty moot. If you want to work out whether he is a good weight for his size, you may find this link here helpful. Please reduce any pellets and veg gradually to prevent any rioting.
The Importance Of Weighing - Ideal Weight / Overweight / Underweight

Hiya, I have read that the average for guinea pigs is 0.7-1.2 kg. I feed my pigs enough pellets(Pets at Home) to cover the bottom of the bowl once a day along with two lots of veggies and unlimited hay and they are within the average weight.
Hope this helped!

My newly adopted sow is 903g and my boar was always around 1.1kg however he's had a few surgeries and lost bits of weight post op and is now down to 990g, he's maintaining his weight now but he's not put on the weight he lost. Your piggy sounds an ideal weight and I'd be glad of my boar getting back to that weight :tu:

My Bumble is 1323 gms and not porky at all - he always drops 100 gms when he has an op,but it goes back on after a few weeks.

One of my boars in the past was 1.5kg, he wasn't obese, just a big boy. My largest boar at present is just under 1.4kg. Piggies vary a lot in shape, size and weight. Your boy sounds perfectly healthy to me :)
