Hello there,

My 2 year old guinea pig Boba has had increasingly odd shaped poops for the past few weeks (see images below - they are the ones that are odd, the normal ones are her sister's poops). I have honestly not noticed one single normal looking poop since last week.

She is still eating and drinking normally. I am taking her to the vet in 2 days. Can you guys give me a guideline on (a) what this could be caused by, (b) home remedies to help alleviate, and (c) what I should expect the vet to say / do in terms of physical exam, tests, imaging, etc. I am very new to this and I have never taken my piggy to the vet for this problem before. I know they will probably recommend an x-ray, but if she doesn't have a full obstruction, is this really useful? Obviously I want the best for my piggy, and I am willing to pay for tests/procedures, but I also don't want to expose her to unnecessary exams or procedures, since I know piggies are delicate creatures. Thank you!!

Hi! Please take your boy off any fresh veg until the poos have normalised for 48 hours.
Please weigh him daily at the same time and if necessary top him up with syringe feed; it looks like his hay intake is a bit on the low side. The more hay and fibre he eats the better.

Generally a blockage causes loss of appetite and weight and a pretty quick deterioration; if nothing can come out on the other end, you are feeling very sick and your body will refuse to accept any more food until the way is clear again. This is not a sign of it.
It rather looks a milder digestive issue to me. Your vet will hopefully be able to find out what is causing it, as it has been going for a bit now.

What you can also do is a) syringe 'poo soup', made by soaking fresh healthy poos from his sister in a little water and then syringing that. This contains all the right stuff to inoculate his guts (including gut bacteria) even though it is a bit gross. And b) order some fibreplex from online. It contains more than just probiotics and can really help with piggies with an ongoing digestive problem.

Depending on what your vet says, you may want to discuss support with gut stimulants or painkiller.
