Off To Vets With Maddie

Maddie is fairly bright today, having her fluids like an angel etc. Millie Moo on the other hand is not so bright so I am back off to the vets later. On the plus side I have tested her wee and it is perfect. Lucky am off work today though am only off because I am sick too. Hoping for an xray to check for fluid on her chest but they will most likely say that that needs to be done tomorrow which means leaving her there for the day.

Thank you. Millie had an xray but it didn't show much apart from a small amount of gas so I have had her on the massage pad and she is having fluids. The vet prescribed Emeprid and Metacam too so she has had that. She does seem a bit brighter tonight and is loving her critical care and fluids. She wasn't too keen on the massage pad though and rolled off twice. Will post her xray once it is emailed to me.

Happy to say Millie seems a lot brighter today and was washing Katie's eyes which she does on a daily basis and has to chase her to do it so I think she has more energy too.

Maddie is having gut issues I think, and am back at work today so sat here worrying, will put her on the massage pad etc as soon as we get home. She is taking her critical care really well though and lets me give it to her wherever she is sat, only problem with that is the others come and eat from the bowl and I have to keep topping it up. They all have her fluids with her too.

Great to hear Millie is better. It is cute the way everybody wants Maddie's food!

She has gone downhill sadly, if there is no improvement in the next 24 hours we will be making a decision. Went to vets earlier and she was all bravado but back home she is moping about even on high end pain relief, even if she had the op now I think she would be too weak to make it.

Oh Helen I'm sorry Millie has gone downhill...really hope she perks up or at least feels a bit more comfortable soon. I will be thinking of you and Millie over the next day or so. ((hugs)) x

Millie is fine, back to her usual self, sorry I got all confused, it's Maddie that has gone downhill. Think it could be the Marbocyl but she needs to to fight the infection so she can have the op and the Septrin wasn't quite strong enough. We are giving as much probiotics as we can.

sorry its me being dim....been a long day. Give Maddie a hug for me. Poor girl. Hope she pulls through and fights the infection x

This morning she amazed us by getting up for veg, she ate a bit of cucumber and a small bit of celery then took herself off to bed. We have taken her off the Marbocyl in case it is that that is making her feel lousy (she is back on Septrin) but to be honest I think it is all just too much for her now. We will assess her tonight when we get home but it is looking like she will be going to the vets. I need to think about her quality of life and at the moment she doesn't really have any. If she had the op I am not sure she is strong enough to fight it, especially when we have to take her heart issues into account too and how prone to gas she is, also behind the stone is a bladder full of sludge so even if this one is succesfully removed the chances of others forming are high. It is difficult but I need to think of what is best for her in the long term.

Bless you Helen. Its never an easy decision to make and I'm sorry for anyone who hasto make it. Good luck at the vets and hugs to you all. X

Thank you, have been sat here at work with it all going round in my head and writing lists of pros and cons for PTS but I think it is ultimately the right decision for her, the likelihood of her passing the stone is slim because of where it is and the op would be too much for her the way she is at the moment. The thing is she is likely to be quite lively at the vets as she always is and won't look like a sick pig, however, it is her behaviour at home that is important and that is her going to the loo every few minutes and shouting with pain and arching her back and juddering (even on high doses of 2 types of pain relief), sitting in a corner, nibbling at food but not showing much interest and just wanting to sleep. Her urine is also very smelly.

Yes I think so, I know a lot of people wil think that as she is a sow that it should be a straight forward op to remove the stone or she may be able to pass it but sadly with her there are other things to consider.

Just catching up on the forums Helen as we've had no proper Internet for the past 10 days. Really sorry Helen its an awful situation to be in.
Reminds me of Parsnip with his peg teeth which I felt we managed ok but then he developed a stone and I had to sit and look at it from his point of view and decided I wouldn't risk surgery for him.
Sending hugs x

Thanks Alison.

She's gone. It was very peaceful, was a different vet and she completely agreed with our decision, said bladder surgery doesn't have a great success rate. Poor thing was in so much pain peeing and hardly any was coming out, thunk she was getting infection after infection due to the location of the stone.

HUGS

I am so sorry that you had to make that decision in view of poor Maddie's other health problems! It never gets any easier even when you know in your heart that it is the kindest thing you can do for a beloved piggy. :(

Heart trouble is not something you want to carry into an operation (I've lost two of mine to heart failure in an op). You have bought Maddie much more time than she would have had with another owner.

RIP Maddie
