Poor Blodwen pig, she seemed a bit out of sorts a couple of weeks ago then she brightened up again and seems ok in herself, but at today's saturday health check she had a soggy bottom and a nasty yellow discharge coming from her bum or lady bits... I phoned the vet straight away and the receptionist consulted the head vet about how urgent it is so we have a vet appointment tomorrow... I gave her a bum bath, and trimmed off lots more fur, was that the right thing to do? I hope I havent washed off what the vet needed to see but it looked quite uncomfortable and I do worry about flystrike with soggy bums and long fur in this weather! Poor Blod, her lovely lilac skirts and fluffy pyjama pants are now almost a crew cut, but it seemed easier to just cut off the little fur clumps that didnt wash clean...

Oh Blodwen. Good luck with the appointment tomorrow and hopefully it’s nothing that can’t get better over time. Healing wheeks from Toffee, Fudge, Coco & Chanel ❣️

I feel a bit bad if I missed this earlier because she needed her first bum bath and fur trim about 8 weeks ago, but it was just her fur then, which was very long and a bit matted up- her bum and lady bits looked very clean, its always the first thing I look at with dirty pyjama pants fur! Then she dropped a bit of weight and was a bit out of sorts for a few days, but it was only about 30g and no more, and there was a bit of herd hierarchy reshuffling that week... then she brightened up a lot so I thought she was ok... I had her booked in for a vet check in a week anyway before we go back to work full time after the summer, but good they can fit her in tomorrow- it was a nasty yellow discharge, not that it stopped her eating a babycorn reward or two for being a good girl at health check and bathtime. Her weight is exactly the same as last week and 2 weeks ago...

Velvet had a horrible yellow discharge a while ago and it turned out to be a UTI and cleared up after a course of yukky Baytril. Hope Blod Spod has nothing too nasty.

I think a course of yucky baytril may be in order... but hopefully the vet will take some swabs and wee samples and do some tests to find out exactly what bum region bits are infected with what! Blod still seems very happy, I think her newly washed and super short trimmed pants are giving her an airy sense of freedom in this latest heatwave :)

Sending Blodpig all good wishes for her vet trip tomorrow. And I’m sure she’s enjoying the benefits of her recent haircut especially in this heat.

Well that was a very long vet trip... just as it was our turn a poor couple rushed in crying with a small pet carrier, from what they said it sounded like their pet sitter hadnt fed or watered their hammy for a week and he was rushed into an oxygen tent, and I dont think it ended well...
Then finally Blod got seen and in a very un-Blod like feisty gesture she sprayed wee in the vets face while having her bum bits examined! So lots of pee to check, vet did test strips and put some on slides... pee is all clear, but the vet also swabbed the sticky discharge stuff and there is some infection either in her lady bits or grease gland... so baytril for a week! When the grease gland thing was mentioned it made me a bit concerned about Piggle's problem grease gland, even though we've had it checked before its still very yucky, so I booked Piggle in for the same cytology tests for infection on her bum gland secretions next week- so Monday 2nd will be an epic costly vet marathon- Blod a check up at 11.50am, 4 piggy nail trims with the nurse at 12, then at 12.40 Piggle is having her greasy bum swabbed for infection too... then the next day we're back for the other 4 piggies nail trims! That's about £300 of fairly routine vet care in just over a week, but aren't all our little squeaky friends worth it? :)

That’s why we have vet funds
Of course as soon as it’s built up you can guarantee it will be emptied by a piggy or 2 or 3!

Hope Blodwen and Piggle are ok and the results are clear - or at least minor.
Hope Velvet is improving too @Betsy

All the best - it sounded rather like some potential infection.

🤣 at the vet getting squirted in the face! Hopefully Blodwen’s infection clears up soon and Piggle isn’t too bad. That’s a lot of appointments and money but they’re worth it.

I’m chuckling at Blod spraying the vet but glad to hear she’s now on ABs and hopefully the problem will sort itself out. You really are having an expensive time of it. We all go through phases like this, but it’s still a real “ouch - say it quickly” moment when the bill comes around.

Well we'd planned £90 for nail trims and health checks with the nurse next week, and we had wondered for a couple of weeks if Blod had something going on healthwise... and I'd rather pay for the proper tests and know for sure what's going on with Blod, and if Piggle's grease gland has the same infection brewing as Blod has going on, if there's a bum gland bacteria thing doing the rounds I'd rather sort it out sooner rather than later!
I've F10 cleaned my bum bath bucket and vet carrier just in case... Blod seems fine and has forgiven us for the vet trip and 0.5ml dose of baytril!

Oh cheeky Blodwen, fancy peeing at the vet, but I suppose you have to make your feeling known somehow.lol
Fingers crossed and big hugs for Blodwen and Piggle.
Hope they are all sorted soon.xx

I’m sure vets get worse 💩 🤢 😆
Yes the vet actually thanked Blod for giving her such a big sample of what was clearly very fresh urine to work with... saved any invasive sampling... but it was splattered on her glasses and all over her top while she was saying that so I did feel the need to apologise! But Blod usually goes fear catatonic and totally unresponsive at the vets so I think this is a good sign that Blod is starting to not fear hoomans so much, it wasnt just a trickle it was a very squirty "get off my bum" spray like she'd do to another piggy :)

Hope lovely Blodwen is feeling better soon.💕

My Dora (skinny pig) bit the trainee vet quite hard because her hands were cold. Can't imagine what retribution Dora would have inflicted if she had tried to examine her.
