Oh dear....I have a dilemma

I bought G&M some Gerty last week cos I forgot to put guinea food on the shopping list and that was all there was in the pet shop. I always said I would NEVER feed gerty but it was better than them getting nothing. I even told the pet shop owner what the problem with gerty is and she is considering not getting it anymore.

Trouble is they love it. Not one morsel is left in the morning! They have never eaten every single bit before.

What a dilemma I have now. Do I buy it for them because they love it or go with my better judgement and keep them on the Wagg and Tesco food?

I suppose if they ever need to have their urine tested, i could take them off it for a couple of weeks before.

What do you think?
 
Why don't you give Gerty as part of their mix of Wagg etc?

I can't use Gerty as Sumo and Ted both have kidney/bladder problems but when I have used it in the past my lot have loved it too. I guess it is like letting kids have sweets all the time! We all know how yummy things that are supposed to be bad for us are!
 
Mine love it and it doesnt seem to make them ill so i would give them it, maybe as a treat or something
 
I'd mix it with your usual, thats how you are suppose to change their food anyway gradually so think thats the best option,
 
Don't worry, the gerty has been added gradually. I still had half a box of Wagg left when I bought the gerty. I'm now thinking, how can I go back to the pet shop and buy more gerty after telling the owner about the evils of the stuff. She'll think I'm barmy :D ;D

LOL my lot don't like it either! Now introducing them to the PAH nuggets with their tesco food.
 
I've given in a bought G&M another small bag of Gerty today. I sent my friend into the pet shop to get it in case the woman recognised me ;D ;D
 
The pet shop owner didn't warn my friend about it though so it's obvious she didn't take in a word I was saying tut tut ::)
 
As far as I know, unless its been reformulated, the reason they say don't give gerty is because it has sun set yellow colour in it which can cause all kinds of health problems such as bladder stones, which can require surgery.
 
someone on here said it caused false glucose readings, which led to insulin overdose
 
When I went to the lecture at the CCT about diet and nutrition, They were saying that Gerty was a good food in terms of nutrional content. I said that I had heard it wasn't a good food to give because of the colours and Gina said that the risk of bladder stones was so minimal that it shouldn't cause alarm. There was also a rep at the lecture from whoever makes it (is it Supreme?) and I asked her why they use the sunset yellow dye when it can be harmful and she said it was because the owners liked it. This caused quite a stir and she said that when she went back to work she would tell them what we had said. Whether she did or not I don't know but at least we got our feelings known to someone who could make a difference.
 
My problem isnt that Squeak eats Gerty Guineapig food.. its that she loves and will only eat... wait for it... Russel Rabbit? The pet shop I got her from, were feeding all their pets on Russell Rabbit, and I have tried her on every guineapig food going and she wont take... I'm trying to mix a bit of guineapig food, more and more each day! I swear one day i'm going to wake up and find her with long ears and a bushy tail! :o
 
I think at one point Russel rabbit with Carrot and Leak was recommended for piggys mixed with guinea pig food. Don't worry as long as it not just any old rabbit food as some of them have a drug in them to prevent a disease in rabbits that is toxic to GPs and obviously usually the balance of stuff in it wouldn't be right. But I am fairly sure Russel Rabbit C&L is ok mixed with something else will double check that.

Yep have checked for you

It was the CCT and the recommendation was Allen and Paige goat mix and Russel Rabbit Carrot and Leak mixed together. If you can get the goat mix (I think its in saks). Not sure if its ok on its own but you could ring and check! details are on my links page near bottom.
