Hello,

I am just wondering if anyone has experience with an older guinea pig vocalising just before pooping, her poops are normal.

Our indoor piggie Cake (pictured), is 5 years old and was spayed, for medical reasons, 4 months ago and has made a full recovery. Sadly 3 weeks ago we lost her sister due to a very large kidney stone that could not be operated on. Since losing her sister (she was put to sleep and we made sure Cake realised her sister was gone) Cake, mainly in the morning and evening, vocalises, sometimes soft and sometimes loud, just before she poops.

We have taken her to the vets, had x-rays, scan and blood tests, and all results are normal, the vet has suggested that she could have scaring on the bowel and it's a little painful to pass, the vet also suggested it could be stress related (we have adopted a companion who is in the same room but can't get them to meet just yet, as he needed to be neutered, and is now recovering from that surgery, they have seen and smelled one another and she's very keen), Cake has also had painkiller medication but it doesn't really make a difference, as she still vocalised.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this with an older guinea pig and if there is anything we can do to help her.

Diet wise, she has Timothy Hay 24/7, a tablespoon of vitamin C nuggets and some romaine, cucumber and tomato in the morning and evening.

Set up wise, she is in a C&C 4x4 hutch, with fleece bedding, which is changed every morning and evening, with a deep clean once a week.

I’m sorry to hear this, and I’m sorry for your loss

What is her dosage of painkillers?
I assume it was the cat (0.5mg/ml) version?
Something like Arthritis can also cause pain when pooping and it’s always possible she needed a bit higher dosage.
It may also have nothing to do with that but given her age it is worth exploring.

Tomato is not suitable for daily feeding due to the acidity (risk of causing cheilitis). It is an occasional treat food - to be fed no more than once a week.

Are their cages side by side so they can interact between the bars?
Side by side interaction is important for single piggies but it also allows them to get to know each other before you can bond them.
(Of course ensuring his cage is secure (two grids high or lidded) so he can’t escape and get in with her)
