Ollies Castration

All the best! I hope that Ollie has a very smooth ride!

Please ask your vet how soon Ollie can have painkillers again after the op, in case things don't go well and you need to see an out-of-hours or regular vet before the scheduled post-op check-up. See a vet asap at any time if Ollie is completely off food and very lethargic.

While a boy should ideally just pick up where he has left off, recovery can often be slower, so please make sure that you have got everything at home that you need for hand feeding and watering. Weigh him daily for the first two weeks at the same time in the feeding cycle. The wounds should knit fully in that time.

Place Ollie on vetbed, light fleece or light towels, so you can spot any signs of bleeding. Check on him at least once during the first night to see that he isn't opening/gnawing on any freshly operated scars. After that keep an eye on any swelling in the groin area (usually abscess but also a sign of a hernia) and also see your vet promptly if Ollie is suddenly losing his appetite and weight; this is often a sign of an infection. Abscesses can happen weeks or even months after the operation.

I have just picked Ollie up. He is very drowsy and feeling sorry for him self. They said he ate a little but not much. They are going to ring me tomorrow for an update and I'm taking him on Monday to be checked over.

Aww, that's good that he's had a little something to eat. Thor was very low after his op too but picked up quite a bit when I moved his hospital cage next to the girls! I hope Ollie has a quick recovery - if you feel worried at any point please don't hesitate to call your vet :)

Bless him, hope he has a quick recovery. I found with the two I had neutered that offering some CC on a spoon perked them up quite quickly :)

Thanks everyone! He hasnt moved at all hardly since he's been home. He's in his hidey and won't come out. The vets been very nice. She gave me loads of information to read about after care. And she said I can phone at any time if I'm worried. @ladykelly what's cc? X

Critical care, the top up food for when they are ill usually but it just seemed to perk my boys up and get them to forgive me quicker lol.

Is he giving you the stink eye. Peter was worse to me than Buddy though he recovered quicker he gave me rotten stink eye for ages. It was an almost "I'll never forgive you for this" look though that was all forgotten when he moved in with his wives

He's still drowsy and hiding up atm. How long was it until yours pooped? Or wee'd? Ollie hasn't yet. I just hand fed him some water. And he hasn't touched his food

I'm not sure to be honest as it's been a few years. Could you try mushing some pellets if you don't have liquid feed? I worried about bumble not pooping after her spay but when I went for the post op the next day the vet nurse told me she had done the biggest pile ever before I came to collect her!

You need to make sure you get some food in him to keep his guts going & increase his chance to poop. If he hasn't passed anything by morning I'd be inclined to ring your vets for advice

Thanks. They are phoning me tomorrow so if he still hasn't pooped I will tell them. I just put some fresh cucumber in his bowl but I will try with the mushed up pellets. X

Do you have access to any dandelion leaves or grass? They're pretty successful when it comes to perking my lot up!

Hope he's doing well, sending healing vibes for a quick recovery for this little man!

Hi, just a quick question. I've noticed Ollie hasn't really been cleaning 'down there' should I be cleaning it and what with? He's got a check up later today with the vet. Do you think I should let her see it or clean it myself ? Also there's a little blood which has only happened today.

I just got back from the vets. Poor Ollies bits are infected :(
And he's lost 90g since the op on Thursday. She gave him an injection and he's on antibiotics twice a day for a week and I need to bathe his bottom once a day. I'm going back on Wednesday for another check up.

I just wanted to say that it was looking a bit swollen. Hopefully, it should come down again with antibiotic.
Please keep weighing Ollie daily and please top him up with hand feed. It is important that you are keeping an eye on the weight, as that can alert you to problems and the topping up is also going to help him fight off the infection. I would recommend to give him extra vitamin C in order to boost his immune system. Give him a pinch of probiotics 1-2 hours after the antibiotics, either sprinkled on a piece of his favourite veg or (if that doesn;t work) dissolved in 1ml of water.
