Ollies Castration

All the best! At least the weight loss is only very slight. I hope that he continues to recover well.

it can take some weeks in the wake of an operation, especially one of complications for a piggy to start putting on weight again, so please don't panic. Ollie is going to be a happy boy nevertheless!

Poor Ollie! I hope he picks up again quickly - the promise of girly pigs is one worth recovering for!

If only he knew what his future had in store, I'm sure he'd eat then! I tried the recovery food. He ate a little bit then kept spitting it out. I'll try again tonight

I hope Ollie gets over his operation soon. Have you tried him on Critical Care Fine Blend. Mine weren't too keen on the plain Critical Care but they did accept the Fine Blend. I get it through Vet UK.
Also I went to the vet Monday and he recommended Supreme Recovery Plus as it contained vitamin C. My poorly guinea pig did eat it. So that may be another option.

Please see your vet again. I am sorry that poor Olli has got such a rough ride! :(

I agree with Wiebke, that doesn't look good.

When syringe feeding them I give them long strokes from there head to their back I find it encourages them to chew. With my lot if I put anymore than 1ml they always spit some out. I normally aim for 0.5ml at a time to prevent aspiration.

Continue to weigh him yourself also this will allow you to track his weight at home which can indicate any other problems quicker.

Really hope your little guy recovers soon.

Aw, poor little Ollie-pig, he really doesn't seem to be having an easy run! :( Sending healing vibes and wheeks from the herd x

Oh, poor Ollie! I hope the infection clears up quickly. Remember, you still must wait until 6 weeks after the op before putting him in with the girls. Just to make sure that his "pipes" are clear!

It sadly sounds and sounds like an abscess forming. Please ask your vet for a strong antibiotic, like Zithromax, which is excellent when it comes to cutting through abscesses.

Hope all goes well 2nd Wiebke advice about Zithromax. My vet found a paper in Rabbits which showed Zithromax to be over 94% successful against abscesses.

Your boy is having such a rough time. Here's hoping for a quick recovery.

Hi. Thanks everyone. It's nothing to worry about. She said its quite Normal and it will go down eventually. Ollie was a naughty piggie. I was holding him and the vet was having a feel of his privates when he suddenly shot a load of poops out. The vet quickly caught them! I couldn't stop laughing!

Good news! Great that it is not an abscess, but worth making sure as there is a good deal of swelling.

Oh dear! How embarrassing! I imagine that Ollie was letting you know what he thought of the Vet's methods!

 There is now a big hole where that black bit was. It must have popped! It's a good job I have an appointment later today!

Zithromax is really the best antibiotic for abscesses. Really glad you have a vet appointment. Abscesses are nasty things and can take a long time to heal without the correct treatment. We tried multiple antibiotics before our vet gave us Zithromax.

The vet will most likely flush the abscess out and you'll probably have to keep it open as abscesses are best to heal from the inside out.

Abscesses can literally blow up in hours at a pretty frightening speed, so don't feel bad, @KevinandCharlie!

I would also recommend using zithromax; it is by far the most effective with post op abscesses and infections, espeically where other antibiotics don't cut through.

Please also be aware that any abscess needs to heal from the inside. You have to be tough and peel the scab off at least one or twice daily, so any pus can come out and keep the abscess open so it can drain for as long as possible. It is not pleasant at all, but any little bit of pus left inside can make the abscess return. :(
