Onyx has a UTI

Update - gone back a couple of steps :-(

Onyx's weight has dropped, she's wanting so much to eat food but sniffs it and then tastes it and then goes away. Chatters her toofies at me to say that's NOT what i want......

I'm pretty sure it's not toofies as she'll eat her hay and grass without hesitation! Also loving her lettuce.

But she seems to have a tummy issue..... i'm keeping her on the probiotics and last night and this morning i gave her mushed up oxbow pellets and the juice from it too....she adored it...not happy with me popping the soft pellets in but she could chew fine!

Anybody think of whatelse i could do? @) THANKS x>>

How much has she lost?

When did she finish the antibiotics? Their little tummies can take a little while to get back up to normal function after abcs.

Are her poos a normal size/shape/colour/Consistency/quantity?

thanks love XXXXXXXX

I took her off the meds last night so her last dose was thursday morning 0.45ml
She has lost approx. 50g i know it doesn't sound much but it's the fact that she's turning her nose up at her veggies that worries me :...

Poos smaller .....

The main thing is that she's still eating hay and that food is going in, and poo is coming out!

I'd definitely continue the probiotics, it takes a while for things to return to normal. In the meantime, give into all her piggy food desires :)) it might be worth feeding her veggies away from Velvet while she's still a little off colour, sometimes they can take a little but longer to decide to eat, and certainly in the case of Jeff & Cameo, by the time Cameo decided she was going to eat some veggies, somepig had scoffed it all rolleyes

Forgive me for forgetting which piggy is diabetic, but if Onyx isn't, you could offer her some oats. If you're really concerned, you could syringe feed but I don't think it sounds that drastic yet. Also dont forget to supplement vit C if her veggie intake is down

Get well quickly Onyx, stop stressing your mummy!

Thanks Amanda :)

Onyx isn't the diabetic PHEW

I tried the oats....screwed her nose up and usually she loves them SIGH
I gave her carrot she ate a little bit then walked away.
And her brekkie of some silverbeet, ate a teeny bit then walked away.
I offered corn nibblets ate one tiny bit then again walked away :(
Happy to eat a handful of grass tho ! don't want to give too much as it may give her the runs?

I will have to offer her some cranberry via syringe then for the vit. C at least she likes that!

Mummy is totally stressed (had daughter on plane to Bali which was delayed so no sleep) i've been teary all night and day worrying sick about her...... and i hate not being there thru the day.

Hi Glynis

Sorry to hear Onyx isn;t well.

I know she's eating some stuff but if her weight is dropping it suggests she isn;t eating enough and something is preventing that.

Is she also off pain meds? I know you were giving her metacam earlier in the week but sometimes they need pain relief for quite a few days after the antibioitic finishes to keep them eating.

I've also found that tramadol is better at pain relief in urinary situations than metacam. My Maple is on 10mg/kg atm and i know Flintstones Patrick is on 5mg/kg....we both think it;s a bit of a wonder drug...and I think our vets are impressed too as you can still give metacam at the same time for its anti-inflammatory properties.

I find it interesting that Onyx is only wanting lettuce - I have found this with several unrinary pigs - don;t want to eat anything but lettuce (which in itself is not necessarily a good thing bearing in mind it is high in oxalic acid ref some types of urinary stone formation).

I always start syringe feeding mushed pellets if their weight drops and give them as much fresh grass as i can. In some cases, I get authorisation from my vet to give zantac (ranitidine) as it keeps the gut moving and reduces any gastric irritation that may have resulted from giving the original meds on a tummy that is not as full as it should be (which is often the case when they're ill). I also make sure they get adequate pain relief until the start eating and putting on weight again.

Hope this gives you somethign to go on over the nest cuple of days. I'll keep popping back in and you can always PM me is you've got any more questions.

Hugs to all in the Glynis household.

x

edit: sometimes you have to force them to eat the first time to get them re-accustomed to the taste. Once Maple has had a few "stern syringes" he then gobbles his mushed pellets off a spoon x

THANKS XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

She only had the metacam on the saturday, sunday and then monday morning......

But yes it worries me that she's not interested in the veggies but will eat lettuce too! Yes i realise that she shouldn't have too much lettuce.....
I'll keep up with the extra grass too :)

I just have awful memories of this happening before and knowing that if they don't eat enough hard foods it's really bad for their toofies @)

I'll do a search on the meds you have suggested and see if whee can get them ...... i will have a FIGHT with my vet tho as he knows best rolleyes he's really good but not having the experience with the other drugs etc like in the UK it makes it really hard :(

edit: i don't think i mentioned that i heard her 'fart' expell gas...... that is what concerned me too

Oh - the gas indicates her gut isn;t working properly - again down to reduced food intake and perhaps too much lettuce!

In that case i would be thinking about withdrawing veggies apart from fresh grass and definitely opting for zantac (ranitidine) and cisapride (both gut stimulants and good for mild gas problems). If you have probs with your vets please contact me - my vets prescribe these two meds as a matter of course now when my guineas guts are in any way affected. I can give you Robs email address (subject to his approval) and he can also extol the virtues of tramadol as well!

Sorry but it sounds like you;re going to be suringe feeding for a bit and obviously providing very tempting hay!

[QUOTE Mummy is totally stressed (had daughter on plane to Bali which was delayed so no sleep) i've been teary all night and day worrying sick about her...... and i hate not being there thru the day.[/QUOTE]

Oh they just love to worry us. I've had my share of 8... I burst into tears in the veggie isle of the supermarket because of the stress involved in trying to decide what might tempt Maisie into eating something @) the looks I got inbreeding I had to go and sit in the car for a while before I felt composed enough to finish my shopping.
Take a few deep breaths, maybe a deep drink, and give thanks you are not weeping in public with a packet of peppers clutched in one hand:)) It's almost as if the harder we try to please them, the harder they are to please, but I suppose it's the same with yourself when your ill, you know you should eat, you even want to eat, you just can't think what, and the more people make suggestions the less you want:{
Maisie is still giving me the run around over her veg, like Onyx she has not gone off her hay or pellets, we had some successes with parsley in the beginning, but then she went off it, we tried apple for a while now she just sniffs it and walks away, same with lettuce, pepper, even cucumber couldn't get her interest, at the moment she loves her slice of melon drool, but I'm under no illusions, in a couple of days time she won't want to know about it and the search will be on again.
Keep your chin up, at least shes still trying and that's got to be a good sign, anyway with a Mommy like you backing her up she's got the best chance possible.
Lots and lots of HEALING WHEEEEE EEEE EEEE EEEEKS heading your way, I've even got my 3 year old and the dog wheeking in tune with piggies now.

Thanks love XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Whee all send Maisie some more healing wheeeeky loves XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I think Onyx is in a way being smart in not eating her veg...lettuce is just too tempting tho SIGH........ more greeen spaghetti runs in the wet weather again :(|) i don't mind tho :) anything for my babies!!!

THANKS AGAIN XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Can you give me dosages etc.. for the zantac and cisapride. It looks like i wont be able to get them over the counter, tho i'll ask my pharmacist (pity my old one wasn't still there!)
I do have the baby colic syrup (simethecone) i'm pretty sure the dosage is 0.3ml ? but how much can they have, twice a day or once a day? should i break it up into two dosages 0.15 at a time?

Big hug to you Glynis, healing wheeks to Onyx. Zantac sorted Gerry's tummy out straight away when he went off his food so if you can persuade your vet to perscribe it I'm sure it will sort her out and get her nomming again. x

Her overall weight has dropped 65g this week :(

She was hunching a little bit, not too bad, this morning whilst i was cleaning out their house and then doing quite soft but formed poops. After i fed her the soft/mushed up pellets and water and greeeen spaghetti she did more soft poops but no hunching!

Still made some 'farting' noises too :(

Worried!

Onyx was quite wet from urine and her poops are softer, BUT this jelly substance was coming out of her

Can someone help me please?

I've not given her any meds since thursday morning.........

I'm not quite sure what you mean by jelly stuff....but, and i don't mean to be redundant from my earlier post, but maybe an emergency vet visit is in order? Or you could call and describe what's going on and they could advise you if they think she should be seen? Good luck and fingers crossed that it's nothing serious. :...

on phone to them again now..........
Defintely nobody has experience in piggies......i'm going to try to get my head nurse Traci on phone and see if she can help me......

Hope Onyx is going to be okay and you can get hold of someone with piggy knowledge soon - keep us posted.
We're thinking of you and sending some healing vibes from me and my girls.
xx

Healing vibes for Onyx, hope nurse Traci can help. x

Yayyy... thats good news - hope she is on the mend :)
And hope she appreciates her slaves attention mid party :))
x

Yeah she did :)
I couldn't enjoy myself until i'd gone home to check and give her syringe food again.

This morning she's still a little uncomfortable but has eaten grass and mushy pellets and some slightly softened ones.
No sloppy poos tho PHEW!
And i've seen her eating hay x)
