Poppy is hopefully having her operation on Monday. Brief recap - Poppy had cysts on her ovaries and a lump on her abdomen but to do both in one operation was too much anaesthetic so it was decided to operate on the ovaries in the hope that the lump might stop growing. Well it didn’t stop and now the op is planned for Monday. She was amazing after the first surgery, it didn’t barely effect her but this operation I fear might be different. I am struggling whether it is morally right to put her through this, but more worried about keeping her free of infection because of the area that the stitches will be. Because of the distance I live from the vets the consultation will be carried out
just before the op. I will try and post photo of the lump. If anyone has any tips that may help I would be very grateful

Hiya. Ahhhh poor Poppy. I’m not expert or experienced I’m afraid but I’m sure she’ll do better than you think so I would try not to worry & be guided by what the vet says. My late Pedro had a big lump cut out of his back when he was an old chap (6 or 7) & he very quickly recovered & lived for many happy months afterwards. Good luck, let us know how you get on x

Thanks, Poppy is only three and is so much happier since her ovaries were removed so I’m hoping this will sort her out, I can’t just wait for this lump to get too big for her to cope with and then get her put down

Ouch - that looks painful!

Here are our detailed post-op care tips: Tips For Post-operative Care

I've had two sows spayed, plus been through several bladder stone ops as well as the removal of an infected cyst close to the genitals over the years - all with scars close to the ground.

The best you can do is to keep your piggy on vet bed, light fleece or towels in the first week. Change them 2-3 times daily (including any cosies) to keep the risk of infection low, especially in the first 2-3 days before the scar is starting to heal quickly.
I have the hay just in a corner on the fleece so my freshly operated guinea pig doesn't have anything to climb over. If possible and depending how well your girl is bouncing back, keep her with her companion or at least just through the grids. My spayed girls have been through their op and recovery together with their companions.

None of my operated sows has ever had a problem with wound infection. Piggies are amazing healers! ;)

Sending your piggy lots of healing vibes, please remember to prompt the vet if needed for pain relief to give at home after the operation, i also ask for gut stimulants such as emeprid to help keep the guts moving

Everything crossed for Monday. I agree with the above posts -keeping her on clean dry bedding to keep risk of infection down is really important. As is removal of anything with sides (like hay tray/ hay box) thst they have to climb into or over.
Pain relief and emeprid and Zantac as a precaution are also good to ask the vet for.
Everything crossed for her.

Thanks to you all. Last operation the vet gave me pain relief and antibiotics for 3/4 days which Poppy hated. I might try mixing it with juice. I’m getting a bit worried for her now.

Well operation over. Poppy not well at all, everything went ok apparently during the operation (lump the size of an egg ) and she came round quickly but wasn’t eating. She had some critical care at the vets and by the time I was allowed to pick her up it was six o’clock. She looked terrible I tried her with some treats but she was just puffed up and looking like she wanted to die. Had an hours car journey to get home. Once back syringed her with more critical care and some Zantac syrup. About an hour later she ate a little bit of grass and some cucumber and that’s about all so I’m going to give her some more critical care before bed. She’s still in her travel cage and just wants to hide. Should I keep feeding her every couple of hours. She’s had lots of poo’s but I don’t feel she’s well enough to go back in with Pippin. The vet rang up at eight o’clock to see how she was !

Ahhh I’m no expert I’m afraid but Poppy’s had a big operation today, lump being size of an egg!
You’re doing an excellent job with her & giving her critical care & lots of love & support. I would be inclined to feed her/check on her every couple hours tonight.
Fingers & paws crossed for you in her recovery. Huge hugs xx

Thanks, I’m losing hope a bit now, but you never know she might surprise us yet x

Don’t give up hope...you never know. She might just need some longer recovery time. (So sorry I’m not able to offer any more advise on this... I just don’t know enough.)
Healing vibes & hugs  x

Got up at three to check on her but she had already died. R.I.P. Poppy x

I’m so sorry for your loss. The shock of the surgery must have been too much for her. But you really had no option given the size of the mass. Huge hugs to you. Popcorn free Poppy xx

Oh so sorry for your loss as @VickiA has said the shock must have been too much. Don't blame yourself you did what you thought was the best for her and you really couldn't have left her with such a big lump. She will be out of pain now and in her prime playing zoomies at the Rainbow Bridge with her new friends.:hug:to you cos you need it!

Thanks the vet has just rang up to check on her nearly had her crying as well x

So sorry - you did your best for her.
Take time to grieve for her and be gentle with yourself today.

Oh no.... I’ve just read this. So sorry for your loss. You did everything you could for her. Huge hugs :luv:
