I took Squeaks to the vet today for a check up. While I was there I thought I'd ask them for a list of what I spent December-March on trying to make poor Zebedee better. I knew it wasn't going to be cheap as I'd been to the vet with Zeb probably at least once a fortnight throughout that period, but was nonetheless pretty surprised to see that it had cost us £950 :yikes:
It wasn't as though there was anything really expensive in there - mostly consultation fees (£16) and medications, the 2 x-rays were each <£50 (he didn't need sedating etc), and the single most expensive thing was the emergency consult the day he died (£57) - but over the course of 3 months it all added up   .
:bye: cash, now I know where all those moths in my house have come from - they've left my empty wallet in search of food!

Ouch!

It can be surprising how all those little things ad up.

That’s a lot of money.

My late Connie who died back in 2009 had chronic bladder problems. Her vet bill came to just over £1000 and the most expensive thing there was a bladder flush and x rays. It’s amazing how vets bills add up!

It’s a stark reminder why we really need a vet fund.
It never seems that bad when it’s smallish amounts at a time (with odd exceptions) so thanks for pointing out to us how it can add up.

Ouch indeed! I'm still paying off the credit card I took out to pay Brambles vet bills over a year ago.
It certainly adds up when you're going several times a week or even a month!

That's a lot of money indeed. But still I'm a bit envious, I've just paid 87€ for a normal check up by the vet, so to compare to your consultation fees I'm being ripped off here! It's a good thing I just got a pay rise, won't be having a problem how to spend that money :))

Definitely a lot of money! But they are certainly worth it!

It’s always a shock when you look back at your “spend” after a prolonged period of veterinary treatment. Here’s hoping your wallet has a chance to recover.

We don't have insurance or a vet fund, I guess I'm fortunate that my OH has a well -paid job so the money is there if we need it. That said, I would still think twice about going for treatment that would cost several hundred pounds or more in one go. I hope it never comes to that of course, though all 3 of my Rainbow Bridge piggies had an x-ray and/or operation when they were ill, costing £250+ if I remember correctly. Over the course of several months though, I think one easily loses track of what one is spending.

That does seem expensive! My £16 is a 'small pet' rate, but I don't think even their standard rate is near 87 Euros (£75 approx).

The clinic I use seems to have a rate for rabbits and small rodents at 62 €, but I believe I have always been charged 87 € which is the standard rate for 30 min vet consultation. Some clinics also have an extra fee if the vet you are seeing is an exotics vet, my usual clinic at least doesn't have that!

Last week when I lost my dear Voltti, we had time to rush him to an emergency appointment. The vet suggested his hospitalisation and some tests, and I added everything to sum up to near 1000 €... Poor Voltti saved me a lot of money by passing there and then before we had time to start any treatment  That would have been a huge sum to pay in one go, but if it would have meant Voltti to get better I would have been glad to pay it. I'm also lucky to have a decent-paying job, so I have been able to put aside money each month for my emergency fund, which I use to cover vet costs too.
