Emergency Overgrown Back Teeth Are Making My Piggy Poorly!

Hi, I need some advice on what I can do to healthily fatten up my piggy? She has been steadily loosing weight for just under 3 months and despite taking her to 2 different vets 4 times they have yet to say what is wrong with her and don't even seem worried! But I know its her back teeth and she is now so skinny she won't be put under anesthetic to check before we fatten her up a bit. Atm iv taken her away from her 2 sisters and am keeping her inside so I can hand feed her, what I'm after is some advise on what to feed her? Her diet consists mostly of banana, porridge and vegtable baby food (and anything else mushy I can find) but I'm sure the high sugar content can't be great for her? The vet gave us something(?) But she won't go near it. Any advise is appreciated! I just want her back to her happy self :( xx
 
Hi Chloe131 welcome to the forum :) Can you please update where you are, if it's UK & roughly what county etc so we can point you in the direction of a piggy savvy vet :)

The most important bit right now is to put the syringe feed on a good basis. At least 80% of the food intake should be fibre and only about 10-15% vegetables. You could try to mix the recovery food formula from your vet with some mushed pellets to help disguise the taste, or you could try other recovery food brands.

Looks like dental expert Debbie at TEAS has already been tagged &useful info here already.
She uses a vet at the cat &rabbit clinic Northampton. Simon has a brilliant record with treating dental problems mostly without the need to use of general anaesthetic.
If you're unable to travel all that way then try posting in the piggy train
Section &@stewybus may be able to help arrange transport if needed.

Have you tried handfeeding pieces of hay, blades of grass or is piggy not able to eat these either?
Sweetcorn is a fattening food but it doesn't sound like she could cope with that at the moment :(

Could she have a sister as company when your not feeding her? She may be a bit fedup if she's on her own lots when she's not been used to it.

Unfortunatley things are not looking good for my frizzy! :( her first day hand feeding and she seems to like the baby food the most. In the last hour though she seems to have taken on a hunched posture at her back end (to the point she cant walk properly) and keeps shaking like she's in pain! Worst of all shes not eating anything! Strangely she's still curious about everything and tries to move but its more of a hop! :( xx
 
Please have her seen by a vet asap as an emergency! It can be scurvy (lack of vitamin C) but it could also be pain. Sadly, we can only guess over the internet.

Pain can mean that guinea pigs do not want to eat hay/fibre.
 
Oh so sorry to hear your little piggy is so poorly.

Sending her *healing hugs* and as @Wiebke has said it is really important to see an emergency vet as a matter of urgency.
 
The emergency vets is wanting £110 as a consultation fee plus any treatment as extra and I don't have that kind of money! :( is there anything I can do?! Maybe a tablet or something! X
 
as wiebke says it could be pain making her hop &hunch up. She really needs to see a vet tonight even just for a painkiller if the vet thinks she needs it.

Telephone your vet &an emergency vet or details of an out of hrs vet will be provided.

If she's in this much pain she will not be eating normally anyway.

Perhaps get the vet to check for bladder stones /sludge too in case its an underlying cause.

Looks like I posted the same time as you. Do you have any other local vets that could prescribe her metacam pain killer without charging so much?
Or even get the vet to authorise baby calpol if they think it will be effective.
Until the morning when u can see a vet out of emergency hrs.
Please dont give it without the vet working out the dosage/quantity though. It could make things worse instead of better.

I do not want to pry but do you claim any benefits that may allow you to get help from places like PDSA or Bluecross etc.

If you have access to the internet you could try to google the sites and see if any of them can help you.

Hi, I called the out of hours surgery back and told them i couldnt afford the consultation. A very kind vet called me and asked me about her to see if she is in serious pain and I said she's whimpering but her breathings fine and she's still trying to sniff everything so we are going to moniter her for a while and book an appointment first thing tomorrow morning. She's currently having nice long cuddles on our bed. Thank you everybody for your well wishes! x (here's my frizzy in her better days) ❤❤

Think I would make an appt for her first thing in the morning. She needs probable pain issues sorted, then hopefully her eating will improve &her digestive system won't suffer or make her teeth worse by not being worn down throug eating.

Hope she has a comfortable night &you manage to get some sleep!

I am sure that there will be a vet or an organisation out there who will help you and your little girl to ensure she is given the care she needs.

You just need to reach out and ask for help like you have done here. I like to believe that most people in the world who care about animals are good people who will go out of there way to help each other especially in times of need.

Hello everyone, I managed to get frizbee an appointment this afternoon and took her down with high hopes she will get her teeth cut finally! She had started to whimper a little and I felt like the worst piggy owner ever! However its not as we thought and after the vet examined her teeth she said there was nothing wrong with them! She felt her tummy and her jaw and she had already previously had a dieabetes test which came back negative so we had 2 options: to take her an hour and half drive to Swindon and pay extortionate prices just for consultations (they couldn't promise they would find out what was wrong) or have her put to rest. We chose the 2nd option and it broke my heart but she's not in pain anymore and I felt it would be best rather then stressing her even more with tests that may find nothing. I like to think she enjoyed her last few days inside with us having cuddles and being spoilt! Thank you so much everyone for giving me your advise and offering your help and well wishes! I know exactly where to go if I ever need help with my other 2 ❤❤ lots of love x
