A close friend's sister works for p@h - she was told by her manager they were changing focus from guinea pigs to rabbits for a few months either side of Easter to try and maximise sales of bunnies.

I'll be going into my pets at home tonight so I will see whats going on there!

;( that's really sad. Poor bunnies.

That's really sad  If that's true then shows P&H for what it is... Profit profit, with no respect for welfare..

I was in Hartlepool P@H about 3 weeks ago and they only had 2 pigs, and none in the rescue section.
Two weeks ago Washington P@H had quite a few baby males. None in the rescue section.
I bought the last two pigs from P@H Washington last week. They were girls, and there were no rescue pigs. The assistant rang Sunderland for me to see what they had and they only had 4 boars and 1 sow.
In all three visits the rabbits had all the pens and there was only one pen for the guinea pigs.
I did want to rescue pigs but there wasn't any suitable up here, so I had to buy.

When the assistant was taking my details, I told her about my new C&C cage and asked her if she wanted to see it, cause I had a picture on my phone. She said "oh no, we don't need to see their cages" but I explained how proud I was of it and showed her it anyway. It's a shame they don't mind where the little fellas are gonna end up.

We were in Letchworth yesterday and there were no boys and only a couple of girls. There were lots of rabbits though and one was being looked at by a family.

I went to the Battersea one whilst in London and they still had loads of piggies, rabbits, hamsters, degus, chinchillas ...
My local pets at home - Farnham - still had loads of animals.
I hope if they are having a trial they realise that ...
This is going to sound harsh, but hope they have finally realised that homing small animals is a job best left to the true experts in the field:).
:(

I went to the Tamworth store earlier in the week and there were young piggies for sale. Good point made in a previous post, a very new/trial policy may take a while to roll out to all stores so time will tell.
Hi Jane, I went into the Tamworth branch today without reading your post first, and there wasn't any piggies left, all sold I presume.
I know for a fact someone i know has purchased piggies from p&h and they haven't checked what they were going to be bedded on or the size of the hutch because I saw the evidence of their housing at the weekend, straw and a hutch well below minimum standard, well below!

My local one had three piggies in two different pens and 4-6 rabbits over 3 pens. The rescue section was pretty much empty. Only 2 degu's, 2 chinchillas and 2 rats. Plenty of Syrian hamsters though. It genuinely looked like they were getting ready to close down with such a reduction on animals. I'm assuming that if I went in next week it's be a different story with a lot of new baby animals

Right, I popped into my local PAH today and I asked one of the assistants if it was true they were going to stop selling guinea pigs as I heard they were. She told me that as far as she knows they aren't going to stop selling them. She then called someone else over to ask her and again she also said they aren't going to stop selling them. They told me they are getting more guinea pigs in on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I did explain that I'd heard they were going to start selling them via an adoption service instead and they told me that some stores do use an adoption only service rather than selling them. They are going to keep selling them though.

I went into p@h near here &they had about 10 young guineas half each boys &girls roughly. 6 or so rabbit girls &3 boys.
Plus 1 boy bunny for adoption.

Doesn't look like the policy has made its way here :(
The store has only been open about 2months &its stocked up at least once from the first week I went in there.
Xx

Both my local pets at homes had piggies back in them this week :(

Our local store had about 8 young gpigs when I called in last week. There was new signage up about how they would carefully check to make sure people understood what was involved in pet ownership. Hmmmm!? Outside was a selection of brightly coloured 100cm cages with "suitable for two guinea pigs" stickers. Give me strength:mal:.

We where in pets at home yesterday and they only had a few on one side, the other side was cleaned and emptied... Perhaps they are starting it there too.

Is that the Robin Park store in Wigan Ruth? I was in there last week and they had one lone GP in a pen, the other pen had been cleaned out and was empty. I felt sorry for the lone piggy, I hope that they've put him/her up for adoption. Lets hope that they start an adoption service for GPs and Rabbits too, as they are the most abandoned small furry pet. :(

Yeah it was like that the other week went I went in Sarah, but went I went in not last weekend but the one before it had new pigs in both side. Also the one at leigh was full of them :(

I looked my local P@H today, they had only 3 guinea pigs, 1 boar & 2 sows where they'd normally have around 15 in total, these piggies looked slightly larger than what they would normally stock as well... Now they seem to have shed loads of poor rabbits instead!

Did you advise them on proper care or direct them to this forum?

Been to both Norwich and Kings Lynn P@H over the last few weeks. Both had just three of four piggies, but lots of rabbits. Neither had any piggies for adoption.

of course, I already had a conversation last year i.e. no straw, good quality hay, the right food, yep the lot. No doubt with everything else it will be slap dash and I know they will ask if there are any problems. In fact we've had a huge falling out about the care of piggies are no longer friends proper.:cen:

Dobbies are no better. They had three piggies in a glass "cage" that was only three feet by three feet. One big pigloo in the middle for all of them, one water bottle and food just dropped into the sawdust to "encourage natural foraging"!

Well, it IS a good sign that some stores are swapping to adoption only. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that they are simply trialling this at various stores up and down the country. Let's hope it is successful.
There were some piggies in the pens at one of the Derby stores three weeks ago, but to be honest I barely looked at them on the basis that I would want to take them home!

No pigs at all in my local store today. The pens were half set up - had wood shavings/pigloos etc but no water, food or hay. The adoption bit was empty too and I only saw a handful rabbits and a couple of hamsters.

I think it is a good sign if they're moving to adoption only but I can't regret getting my two as babies from P@H.
