has anyone ever bought a piggie from pets at home and discovered that they are pregnant? x

Yes it is very common I got two girl's and one was pregnant, she had two babie's she must of fell at 4 week's, I called them and they offered me a free check up of all 4 piggie's it was a couple of year's ago but i know of lot's that it's happened to

Nar, I swear by my Pets at Home. They even turned down a sale for a £36 product by me last weekend because they felt it was best for my animals not to sell it to me. Basically I bought it then came back to discuss whether it was the right thing.

It was a VetBed, and after discussing with the guy at the till he felt it wasn't best for my piggies (I got the wrong end of the stick from the forums because I didn't read the threads properly) and he told me that he will refund it, saying that the animals welfare always comes before a sale.

They did have a return recently of a 'weirdly shaped' piggie, who turned out to indeed be pregnant. They also pay for any vet costs accumulated over the two weeks AFTER you buy the animal.

They are all very good where I go. But sadly some piggies might get pregnant and sold. It happens everywhere I am sure.

Why was the vetbed no good? I use it for my pigs and so do a lot of people?

i dont get how they come to be pregnant if there in seperated cages it was females on one side and males on the other. I bought a guinea pig from a old style pet shop a week earlier after a week i noticed she looked rounded shes due any day now so she must have been 4-5 weeks pregnant at the time x

I thought p@h got them off local breeder's i know of someone who sell's rabbit's to them for £3 each! maybe the breeder isn't seperating them in time and staff don't always know what to look for and as piggie's are young they expect them to grow so may not notice anything

He just felt it may be more detremental to the animal, and wouldn't be as hygeinic. At this point I wasn't really too sure either, and I started to think maybe they were just for outside hutches.

Basically he talked me out of a sale because he felt it wasn't best for the animal, being that I hadn't done as much research as I should have done.

Yeah, they do get the animals off breeders. I know ours only buys from one breeder. The animals I have ALL have AMAZING tempriments, and are crazy. So much energy. They must have the same Dad! They are too close in age to have the same Mum

I've had 4 pigs in all from there and apart from my first two having really bad fungal infections and scabs (thin) the other two are fine. No pregnancies :) I only ever have boys anyways.

Either they don't sex the pigs correctly, or maybe they were pregnant when they came to the shop. Where I got one of my pigs, she was in with all females, but must have been pregnant before she got there.

Well my friend got 2 female guinea pigs from a pet shop (not from pets at home though) and they were BOTH pregnant! She ended up with 9 guinea pigs, she only wanted 2! rolleyes But they kept 2 of the girls, I got the other baby girl and the boys all found new homes. :)

i no when i got my chloe as i said she must have been about 5 weeks pregnant but i didnt know, can you imagine if i just wanted her for my daughter and only bought a standard cage but thankfully ive got mine in an 8ft chicken coop with run but my chloe is inside while i keep an eye on her x

I think I'm lucky too in that my local store is a good one :)

All three of my girls are from Pets at Home and luckily, we had no surprise additions

I hate to sound negative, but pets at home will be getting a lot more money out of you in the long run if you use wood shavings rather than the one of cost of vet bed that can be washed and re used for a couple of years

I can't believe the cost of shavings in there, I get a MASSIVE bale of compressed, dust extracted Hunter shavings (top horse brand) for £8, one of their medium ones that aren't properly compressed costs that much!

Sorry slightly off topic but I try and hilight how cheap you can get shavings for if you know someone at a livery yard - actually don't use them myself anymore but like to pass on to those who do!

Yes! I have had three guinea-pigs pregnant from P@H and I think its because all it takes is one boar to get into the sows pen and they can all get pregnant, and P@H mis-sex guinea-pigs so often, so there's probably almost always a boar in the sows pen at P@H because they don't check all the guinea-pigs carefully before putting them in the pens to make sure they know what gender they are.

I like my pets at home as far as toys and products for the piggies is concerned, i cant comment on the animals as ive only ever had a hamster from there when i was 14 and that was years and years ago.

Maybe the man carma violet talked to just had'nt heard of owners using vet beds in guinea pig cages, i hadnt till i joined this forum. Now I'm glad i dont use wood shavings personally because of all the recent troubles we've had. :)

No I don't think he had, but I have such huge respect for them considering he talked me out of a sale because he felt it was better for the animal

Our pah isnt that bad either, maybe its just certain ones.

All but one of my guineas' are from the P@H in Stockport.. they have a vet on site, who does a free health check.. If a sow is pregnant, or your worried, if there is a store near you who has a vet on premises, then book the piggie in..
I bought a female once, who after a day or two showed symptoms of a really bad chest infection and didn't make it, despite treatment..
She was also small for her age (a runt) which might be why she succumbed8...
Then there was Liquorice who had an abscess in her lymph node near her throat, who had to go and have it lanced, P@H payed for her treatment, they're really quite good, I've found them helpful in these times of crisis :)
