It’s not a bad PAH, compared to some others. I have spotted some ill piggies (and even bought one, once...)
They do have all sorts though

Certain PAH stores do an amazing job, my local one is one of them. Other pet stores should be ashamed of the way they keep their animals :(

Not to encourage buying from PAH (still breeder issues) but most of us have given in and bought a baby from there or a shop like it at one point. When I couldn't find a baby to adopt I got one from what might be this store (a couple of these piggies look very like the ones I had to resist a week or two ago). They were very careful, wanted to know that the piggie wouldn't be on its own, had I had guineas before, hay makes up most of the diet, did I know what ringworm was and what to do etc. When I've had concern over a hay poke pig there before they immediately removed and treated it and it was back in the area some weeks later looking much healthier. It seems like some of them are full of staff that do care about the animals.

All my pigs -current and past- have been from PAH, because quite frankly I didn’t know guinea pig rescues were a thing. I was so upset about the loss of my rabbit Bella I just needed something to fill the hole left behind, I was distraught. I did extensive research and it paid off, my boys live the best life they can!

We were in PAH today to get nuggets and wood shavings.
Walking past the piggies there was such a cute little fluff ball.
The voice behind me “ No you can’t have any more”

Quite right really as we have no more space to add cages but I can dream, however I would never buy from PAH.
I did adopt Micah from PAH as they had condemned him to a life of loneliness as a single piggy due to him being bullied.

Oh my goodness, how disgusting. ☹
i was there today and there were two children, maybe 13 and 11 opening the pig cage. i went up to them and closed it and they went away. it should be locked! ): then the little boy started obnoxiously squeaking a dog toy next to the cage. i was so angry! of course i didn’t say anything though now i wish i had told him to stop. i hate it so much that they sell animals but sadly it’s legal and they make money of it so there’s no way they’ll stop ☹️

Our local Pets at Home isn't too bad. But they do always have SO MANY animals for sale. Yes, it's good to have a choice. MAYBE 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Our other local pet shop is a Just for Pets (used to be Wilsons a few years ago). I'm fairly sure it's a local company, branches in Worcester, Droitwich, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Malvern, Wolverhampton, Redditch and Birmingham. They don't have anywhere near as many animals on sale and only use local approved breeders. During the winter months, they have a much lower intake of baby animals because (so I've been told) breeding does naturally decline at this time of year. I've had numerous pets from them over the years and have never had any mis sexed either.

my boys were from pets at home because I was very stupid and didn't do my research just wanted a pet and had guinea pigs growing up so i thought that the care we gave those pigs must have been ok and I really didn't know where else you would get one. the staff were unhelpful and gave a lot of poor information but I have to say my local pets at home since I've moved is a lot better.

My local pah is pretty good, I've seen some awful independent pet shops which are far far worse but also the odd genuinely lovely independent pet shop, the thing that puts me off with pah isn't the store its the rodent Mills 😔 nugget and fluffy were pets at home piggies, do i regret it? I love them for who they are so not really I just wish idve started with more knowledge but then I'm still learning every day nearly 2 years on 🙈

My biggest frustration about them is the lack of knowledge on genetics etc. No store has any business selling satins considering their potential health issues, roans or dalmations until they can 100% guarantee sexes in all stores, and they certainly shouldnt be selling lethal whites!
But that aside, my local store is pretty good, I very rarely see a poop, always loads of hay, they always look nice and healthy. I almost brought home a satin the other day but he was sold by the time I went back for him.

I’ve never seen a lethal in mine, I didn’t know they sold them at all... hate to think what would happen instead

You may be getting confused with white piggies and red eyes, these aren't lethals this is just genetic colouring.

My Willow is a roan from PAH and she's very healthy. Never ever intend to breed any of my girls though

Not confused, genuine lethal whites have been sold or found.
My current pets at home roan is healthy, but my last one was sold to me pregnant and birthed a satin who was stunted due to Osteodystrophy. And I've seen other people's roans birth lethal whites. I'm not saying they shouldn't exist, but they shouldn't be bred in rodent mills that give no thought to their genetic health, to end up in stores who can't always identify genetic issues or pregnancies.

What happens to pets at home animals if no staff are in because of lockdown?

Forgot to say.. 😅 I don't know if you follow Bear and Otto the lethal whites on Facebook? But they were in Guinea pig magazine the 51st issue, they were both from Pets at Home too.

Apologies, I've never seen lethals, only white with red eyes. But no I totally agree with you, genetics should be considered

I actually was thinking this this morning, I imagine they'd consider this and maybe allow a selective few members of staff (alternating days) to cover the care of their animals. And if lock down got to the point of people not being allowed out except to food shop, I'd imagine they'd had out passes for these people

Just been to PAH as my hay wasn’t delivered, saw so many cute animals and really wanted to buy them all... Chose instead to buy stuff for the piggies I already haveView attachment 135543View attachment 135544View attachment 135545View attachment 135546View attachment 135547View attachment 135548View attachment 135549View attachment 135550View attachment 135551View attachment 135552
Our local PAH is set up like this too. I always look and watch the animals whenever we go to buy something, which annoys hubby coz it takes me too long. 😂😂

No need to apologise! ☺
I hope maybe staff can divide them between them and take them home if there's a lockdown, or maybe return them to their supplier? Doesn't bare thinking about that they may be left behind!

So far the issue is with people, not pets. Like...it's spreading from person to person, but not from person to animal and vice versa if you get me? So they might be able to put one or two people on shifts throughout the day - keep the store closed but have one or two people in for a few hours at a time to feed the animals, clean out cages, check on health, that kind of thing.
