People Just Don't Understand....grrr

It angers me when people see small pets as disposable. I was met with the same comments from a work colleague and he got the short end of my temper as i really thought better of him. Suffice to say he apologised. Sometimes I don't think people are intentionally thinking that small animals aren't worth it, but they think it's big and hard to make comments like that. Like when people who don't have horses joke about them being made into burgers, and if you keep rodents and snakes they ask if you feed the rodents to the snakes. Some people just don't think, and it's that lack of thought which winds me up! *hugs* Kell, stuff the lot of them. You have your piggy friends here! :)
Thank you Ruth hugs to you hun and I'm please to hear you colleague apologised :)

If they by "guinea pigs are cheap to replace so why bother spending the money" then why don't you remind them that it doesnt cost anything to give birth to a child but we wouldn't adopt that attitude if a child was ill. Piggies have just as much right to be cared for and looked after as any other animal on this planet!
Ohhhh :agr: that is very true Davey, :box: these replies have given me a great strength to agree back next time. Huge thank you every one .

I know, no one would be able to care for my boys like I do so I dread the thought of leaving them should I go away so I would have to take them with me too I think or not go. I'm due another op in 5 years and my boys will be old fellas by then so I will really dread being away from them. Where did your piggies live while you were away? I'm going to start looking for pet friendly holidays...only no problem my Alex is not a fan of being in the car :(
I'm alright leaving them with my mum for a couple of days, but any longer and with anyone else I know they wouldn't get all the attention they demand!
The logistics of keeping them all in a tent took a lot of fiddling about and rearranging with having both sexes, but eventually we settled on the three girls in the spare bedroom, having free run of the space, and the three groups of boys in temporary enclosures in the main body of the tent. Armed with lots of fans, frozen bottles and access to more grass than they've seen ever, we made it through the fortnight!
of course, I have another pair of boars to make room for next year, don't know how its going to work!
Travelling is a pain as I have to break it up more than I would do normally, but none of them seemed too stressed after this years trip to Devon. Rodney spent most of the time peering out of the window at all the other motorists!

Oh my word that sounds like a lot of planning, I have 4 boys and I'm stopping there :) I would love lots of piggies maybe one day :) glad you had a lovely holiday without the worry of wondering if your piggies were ok and getting the attention they are used to.

It was such a hassle but definately worth not having to worry! Although I did worry about heat stroke whenever I went out! I managed to pitch in a shady corner and opened every vent available with fans and frozen bottles but I still stressed! It would have been much easier if I'd stopped several pigs ago though :D

I hear you. I just spent a bomb on my boy & several 80 mile round trips to the vets which my brother kept commenting was ridiculous. I mean, it's like a tenner in petrol it's not like I was driving to Scotland!

I also got told by my friends dad last week he thought I might have 'grown out' of having guinea pigs by now.

Because there is an age on being an animal lover clearly!

Idiots...

You are lucky; my mum was forever telling me "that they are just animals and not children" when I started having piggies again! And while my piggies admittedly fill the spot of having somebody in your life you can love unconditionally, they are still first and foremost guinea pigs and not furry baby dolls to compensate for a (non-existent) unfulfilled maternal instinct! :hb:

The rest I have learned to live with; it doesn't bother me anymore.

When I get funny reactions from a stranger, I ask pointedly if they have ever thought about what happens to all those piggies with a life expectancy of up to 7 years that small children get tired of within weeks and that their loving parents can't be bothered to go on caring for appropriately? That usually shuts them up pretty quickly! :box:

Like you I have found aiming a pointed response usually does the trick. When the nasty vet's receptionist asked me how long do they live & I could see the monthly dental bills being added up in her head, I interjected with "well, I could always let his teeth overgrow so they pierce the roof of his mouth or he dies of starvation" the look of shock on her face was priceless. I didn't mention PTS because after all that costs money!

Most people here in the states still consider guinea pigs " pocket pets" there for not worth taking to the vet. They always say " we will just get a new one when this one dies" .. Absolutely disgusting!

I have something similar happen that makes me beyond angry.

Theres this woman from the philipines at work. Whenever she sees me she says how she'd like to cook and eat my guinea pigs and all these other comments about it. It makes me so mad that I snapped childishly and said I'd eat you before you could do that!

My mum thinks its funny and I stand there trying hard not to cry. I now want to avoid her at all chances but because she works at asda on my mums counter with her its hard not to. She says it every time she sees me. The only upside to it is she thinks they are rabbits until my mum corrects her and she then says guinea pigs.

She found it hilarious that I wanted to work in a rescue for small animals and also said she'd eat the dogs and cats too.
