Pets at Home are running Pet Care Workshops throughout the summer at all their stores. They are on Tuesdays at 11 am and 3 pm.

Rabbit Workshop 19th July - Scotland and Ireland only
Rabbit Workshop 26th July - All Stores
Guinea Pig Workshop 2nd August - All Stores
Fish Workshop 9th August - All Stores
Wild Life Workshop 16th August - All Stores
Wild Life Workshop 23rd August - England and Wales only

Just thought that any of us with children might be interested in checking them out.

I would go and check them out before letting a child near them - would be interesting to hear whether or not the information they are giving out is correct.

sounds good i think...
if the advice is all correct, it's good that they're trying to help people look after animals properly anyway! :)

I Just think its a step in the right direction. Talking to small children about keeping animals clean, fed and watered is about as far as I take it with the children I care for as they are aged between 18 months and five years. When preparing the veggies for my animals I talk to the children about vegetables they enjoy. I gave one of the children some cucumber to feed to the animals and she asked if she could share it with them as she loves cucumber!

They are in the school holidays, or are you planning on working through the hols?

I have no one to take me on weekdays, dad only gets weekends off, and my grandparents would think I'm crazy!

I have a slight dilemma, I've been offered a job at P@H and am currently out of work. I'm totally against them as a chain but I'm tempted by the position, Should I avoid the place all together or take up the offer in the attempt to pass on some guinea pig knowledge and hopefully do some good?

I think you should take it. :) Your knowledge should be very useful to them and also how can they ever improve if people who truly care about animals don't go to work for them. The staff at our local Pets at Home seem to be very caring and it has certainly improved the way I feel about the store. :)

When I was out of work I also applied for a position at a Pets at Home store although I didn't get offered an interview.

I would say go for it! :)

well I think I might have to pop into one of ours on the piggy day, I went in today and was pleasantly surprised at the animal in closures as they had loads of fans on them keeping them cool and in the tiny pets bit they had bottles in each which I assume were chilled to keep the hammys etc cool BUT they had forgotten to put a fan in the adoption corner surprise surprise ::)

Yes when I was in our local store last weekend they had fans and chilled bottles in the enclosures. I have to say they are always very clean too. :)

I have had some bad experiences with them in the past but I have to say things have improved at our local store tremendously in the past year. :)

Do you have to have kids to go? Or can anyone have a look?
I'd also be inyterested to see what advice theyre giving out!

i think that the pets at home on the island keep the animals very well, actually! The staff are always really friendly, and the animals are always clean and look well! What makes others think it's bad? :embarassed:

I think anyone can go. :) Its just been promoted as a summer holiday thing, as they know people with kids are always on the look out for something to do with the children during those long six weeks!

Selling animals with mites and fungal infections.
Mis-sexing animals resulting in young animals becoming pregnant and giving birth in the care of unwitting owners.
Housing rabbits and guinea pigs together.
Housing solitary syrian hamsters in groups.
Bedding them on cheap, dusty shavings.
Putting excess, old and unsellable stock in the "adoptables" section.

i do agree with you..there is a lot of complaints about P@H from many pet owners i think your probably wasting your time going to a workshop they are holding

I only go into one Pets at Home store and thats the one in Rugby. Here many of the staff seem extremely experienced with rabbits and guinea pigs. The animals are well cared for and rabbits and guinea pigs are housed separately. The enclosures are always clean and they have plenty of food. I feel its unfair to categorise all Pets at Home stores the same. A store is only as good as the staff who work in it and the staff at this store seem very efficient. I believe in giving credit where credit is due. O0

i'd aggree, the pets always look fine, the staff seem experienced, and the rabbits and guineas are always separate and the woodshavings look fine to me. but as you say i think it's more to do with the individual stores, and it's slightly unfair to brand all of the p@h's bad. :embarassed:

I have 6 stores within an hour of me. Out of those, 4 have sold customers guinea pigs who are either ill in some way or pregnant. The "stock" are kept in the same way in all stores and are only now being seperated by species because it's now (or soon to be in the case of secondary legislation) the law - not because they care.

Agree :)

I've never seen an ill on in Warwick store. I really only go for the cats biccies and some nuggets for Ton, but everything seems pretty good :)

Getting better all the time in fact :) Changes still to be made and for people to learn a bit more, but improvements are good :)

When I was given my little Ralfie by the staff at the Rugby Store - they wanted him to go to a special home and therefore knowing my love of piggies they asked me - quite a few of the staff came to say goodbye to him. It was clear he had been given a lot of love and attention when he was in the store as he was so very tame and friendly! They regarded him as a special piggie as he had had an operation to remove an abscess and they had all become very attached to him. They weren't willing to sell him to just anyone and in fact they would only let him go to a special home. The Manager said that as long as the staff were happy with the home he was going to then they wouldn't be making a charge for him.

Therefore to say these particular staff don't care would be well out or order and downright rude!

i'm sorry. i haven't really got much experience with p@h, as the only one on the island has just come.

Have just re-read the email and it would help if I read things properly the first time. :embarassed: There are actually two events each week. Tours of the pet shop every Tuesday and Pet Care Workshops on a Thursday. So yes the dates are correct but they are Thursdays not Tuesdays! Sorry!

Well if you applied for the job, you obviously want it...so why are you asking us ?

I guess on the one hand they should educate their staff etc, but on the other, for the wages they are paid, its no wonder their staff generally the arent the brightest crayons in the box! ;D

I might go to the fish one, have a look, its in the summer holidays you see haha

Well i think if ours is anything to go by it will be a case of them learning people how not to sex animals :o
