are only now being seperated by species because it's now (or soon to be in the case of secondary legislation) the law - not because they care.

It's not the law as far as I know - the species are being separated because they have been taking on board the advice and suggestions of places such as the Rabbit Welfare Association. There is no law that says rabbits and guinea pigs cannot be kept together :(

have a slight dilemma, I've been offered a job at P@H and am currently out of work. I'm totally against them as a chain but I'm tempted by the position, Should I avoid the place all together or take up the offer in the attempt to pass on some guinea pig knowledge and hopefully do some good?

Well if you applied for the job, you obviously want it...so why are you asking us ?

I guess on the one hand they should educate their staff etc, but on the other, for the wages they are paid, its no wonder their staff generally the arent the brightest crayons in the box! ;D

Woah! A job is a job at the end of the day! Money is money, perhaps as Fallen says she can make a tiny bit of difference in one shop which will always help!
It would be nice to think that you could make a tiny bit of difference and at least you would go home at night knowing you've done the right thing or helped someone with your info / knowledge of gp's. I know I would like to go home feeling ike that. But be warned there will be the outside bit where the animals are "quarantined" etc which may be a little upsetting some times, I know at my one the girls there have housefuls of one eyed, one eared bunnies and piggies! - Be prepared! You may even not get near the pets you may be shelf filling!
Good luck anyway!

There is secondary legislation coming into force that will mean that animals must be kept in species-specific accommodation.

Thanks FF, we will be visiting these, just need to decide whether or not to sport the Tee Shirts and give the game away or act innocent? I know there'll be no telling my son that you don't have to bath guineas or that selling Satins in pet shops is OK ::)

Do you have any links to that info? I can see it being very hard to enforce, seeing as places like the Pet Care Trust still recommend rabbits and guinea pigs being kept together. Ultimately, DEFRA and the like will assume they are correct and allow that exception if it is well established practice (which, unfortunately, it still is). Even if the RSPCA try and prosecute for keeping the two together, the defence will be held up by "the Pet Care Trust says it's ok"....and if one organisation (the one who does all the courses and qualifications >:() says it's ok, I can't see how they can possibly enforce separation on legal grounds :(

Just wondering, whats wrong with housing rabbits and guinea pigs together?

I'm new to guinea pigs - and am not going to house them with rabbits as we dont intend on getting any, but was wondering whats wrong with it? Do they fight or something?

I will look it up... it was on one of the recommendations following the draft publication of the bill. One of the rights of the animal was to be able to "exhibit natural behaviours towards conspecifics" which had implications for housing groups of different species together.

Xanadu86 - do a forum search on rabbits and guinea pigs and you'll find what you're looking for. It's a huge list from guinea pigs being injured through to catching diseases from them. The main idea is that we don't house other species like hamsters and rats together, what makes guinea pigs and rabbits so different?

guinea's can get injured by rabbits - especially if they are kicked by those enormous feet of theirs! They also have different dietry requirements - i.e Guinea's need more Vit C as they dont produce their own like most animals do (humans and dogs are the same as guineas). ;)

do anyone know if the tuesdays is 11am and the thursday is 3pm?

thanks
