Re: PAH!!

OMG more sad news, will this week ever end, let us know if you find out if the poor little thing is ok

Re: PAH!!

I will do, i might try and go again today to see if the little piggie is back in the pen.

It was so sad, i really hope that the assistant took the piggie to the vet as its not one of the stores that has the vets in it.

Re: PAH!!

Then I seriously doubt it, They aren't going to spend money on something that will only gain them £10 to £15. To them the piggy is just stock, a commodity. Sounds harsh but that's how it is.

There was a story in the papers a few years back, can't remember if it was in my local, or a national, but it was about PAH or Petsmart as they were known then, and when the hammies were sick they just took them out the back of the store and walloped them with a hammer.......

Re: PAH!!

Hubby just reminded me that the report also said that staff used to get rid of sick animals by drowning them in a bucket >:(

Re: PAH!!

Oh my gosh, thats awful, the poor little mite yesterday couldn't even open his eyes.

Re: PAH!!

Well not long after it changed to PAH so maybe they brought in new directors and policies but I doubt it :( Also there was a tv programme on it as well if I remember rightly

And one of the many reasons that, if you possibly can, everyone should boycott these stores.

I was considering getting a job with one thats opening on the island shortly but dont think I could stay sane and not lose my temper, I know i would end up being arrested,

i have had a few pigs come into the rescue from pah.

people get them home and after a few weeks they find they are not the sex they planned on having, and the shop wont take them back after 7 days so they come here to be re-homed.

sad for the people that brought them , sad for the pig having a 4th home in so few weeks.

Yup. just found your other post. You're doing a great job for darling piggies.

Hi, just looking through the forum and found this one on Pets at Home. I was in PAH on Friday near me and was horrified to hear the assistant tell a young family who were just about to purchase a rabbit that the scab on its back was probably just a knock or something and it was ok they would just put him out the back until it fell off anyway! I was biting my lip very hard and in the end just had to say "don't you think its more likely to be mites?" at which the assistant looked daggers at me and said no of course not! The family recoiled in horror and said they'd think about it! I couldn't help myself. I felt awful about this the fact that (again) the staff either knew nothing or more likely chose to fein ignorance. It nagged at me all weekend, so on Monday I rang their head office and asked for their complaints department and vented myself on them! Told them about Friday and whilst I was there told them that they shouldn't be keeping baby pigs with huge rabbits to which she replied we don't recommend keeping rabbits with pigs after purchase, which is all very well but they shouldn't keep them together AT ALL! I also mentioned that a basic knowledge of guinea pigs and rabbits would help the staff enormously as at present they had none whatsoever at this particular branch. She asked me if I wanted to leave my details to which I did and told her I would be phoning back today to check on what she had done about the situation or else I would be taking it further as I was just about fed up with the lack of care and knowledge at their "Pet shops".

I said that I was a member on various forums and we are all working girls but we all have a better knowledge and understanding of piggies and rabbits than their so called "trained staff"! I asked her to describe their induction training to which she could only assure it was suitable to which I replied "I think not". So watch this space we'll see what develops today >:(

I often go to PAH in Clifton Moor (York Area) and I thought they were great :-\

The local petshops keep the piggies in 120x60 cages, whereas in PAH they had a lovely nice run attached to that big house thing they live in. Yes, they were together with rabbits, but it was baby rabbits and baby guineas, so no huge ones in there, and enough space for them to get out of each others way if need be. they were very helpful when I was looking for a rabbit rescue to get a friend for my old rabbit Jam, and they dont sell buns and piggies together. Also that they have the piggie care books very obviously lying around near the actual pet area, and afaik they also had some basic care sheets for the different animals they sell in a leafletholder on the cage wall.
All the animals looked healthy and happy, the cages clean and tidy, and I was quite impressed, having only seen shops before that were alot worse...

Btw, I wouldnt buy from piggieshows or breeders either, you are still supporting that whole stupid cycle if you do.. there will always be people who have unwanted litter because they were too dumb to have their boar neutered so the rescues will always have plenty of piggies there, without us encouraging breeders to breed even more by buying from them. In my eyes thats just as bad as buying from petshops. They might be kept better there, but thats not the point, you are still supporting the wrong people. I'm for rescues all the way!

I have been to our local Pets at Home branch in Blackwood. After Julie bought Pebbles she had had an health check with their vet before she left the shop but she had a crusty ear, the left, and she also had a small sore on her back where some of the hairs came away. We have now cleared them both up with aloe vera gel. Even in the Blackwood branch, they put their guinea pigs in with rabbits.

I rang pets at home about a year ago and they told me not to handle the baby guinea pigs as the mother would kill them! I think she was getting mixed up with rabbits.

It just goes to show that their staff really know nothing. The manager should be on here recruiting some of us! :)

As I work at the vets you wouldnt belive the amount of people that come to us and say that they have been given the wrong sex or that there animal is pegnant! They have even said that the pet shop said it was ok to put a rabbit with a guinea pig and to give it rabbit food!

Mary

Thats what I saw happen at our local PAH... They brought a box full of 6/7 week old baby piggies from the back and told this young family they were all female.. so they picked one and bought it. Whilst they were doing all this, I asked if I could pick some up and look at them, the assistant didnt really care and said yes, and that they were all female, should I want to buy one. Being me, I picked up a few and sexed them myself, just incase, and everyone I picked up they were all Male! I told the girl this and she said they werent and that I probably didnt know what I was looking for! I picked one up and showed her and she was like... Oh... and didnt know what to say but gave me daggers... I then said, if you have just sold a female guineapig to those people, if it really is female, couldnt it be pregnant? But she didnt care, and said oh well and walked off with them!!

Makes me angry when people who are 'supposed' to have a little bit of knowledge are put in positions like that! grrrrrr and dont even get me started on the time I went in there to overhear one of the assistants explaining to a young boy and his mum that the rabbit's breed they were going to buy was a himi when it was an english lop!!

grrrrrrrrr

Everyone's been having problems at PAH! :)

Think the staff are more concerned about their wages than the animals!

Like I said, the manager of them all needs to come here! LOL

And guess what else happened that day Mary? The boy that sold Julie Pebbles didn't even know how old she was!

Diane

Some one should print this out and send it to PAH!
If I'm not sure I know something at work I always double check with the nurse or vet. But thay should know what sex it is. I run a guinea pig rescue and what would happen if I couldnt sex them!

Mary

Ok, I rang back PAH to see what has happened since I phoned MOnday to complain and the girl I spoke to then is on holiday!

The guy I spoke to seemed to think I was being overconcerned, as far as he was concerned all the staff had extensive training, knew the difference between male and female and even in thier newly opened stores they kept rabbits and guinea pigs seperately. How come I could count 7 stores that I have been to that keep buns & pigs together? he said out of 200 + stores that wasn't bad going - bad for the piggies though eh?! I told him about us all feeling the same about PAH and he just said he was sorry we felt like that but there really isn't a problem! I asked him why there was only one food dish in the pens for both and that piggies mustn't eat rabbit food and he said its always guinea pig food - great start for the rabbits eh? I asked again what their induction training entailed and he wasn't at liberty to discuss it with me - probably couldn't think of anything!

There is obviously no getting through to them just because they keep the animals in nice clean pens with food water and toys etc everything is ok, the fact they may have mites, be pregnant or an rabbit induced injury is ok too - PAH policy! I know there is alot worse out there with unscrupulous breeders and pure cruelty but they are are a national company so should train their staff a lot better, thats all we're asking.

>:( I think Kelly's spot on though... I know in my PAH, all the staff are quite young, and seem to change all the time cause I think they must work part time whilst at Uni\college, but, a lot of time, its just a job... something to get some beer tokens for the weekend.... I really think that anyone working with animals, whatever they are doing, from running a pet shop etc etc, should at least know a LITTLE bit about the types of animals they are looking after, like how to sex them PROPERLY, and which types of animals SHOULDNT be kept together... Really makes me angry, cause at the end of the day, if these animals arent be looked after properly by the pet shop, then its cruelty.. I know my local PAH a few months ago, had to put all the birds to sleep that they had, and i mean ALL of them, from finches to the small parrots, because they got a disease and it wasnt spotted early enough from what I could tell... Their fish they keep, regulary have white spot, and theres always more than 1 tank with signs on saying that 'The fish in this tank are currently not for sale and are being treated'..

Ok rant over :)
