Totally agree with you, like so many others. But PAH remain unchanged about a few things. They have been the same for years.

Others have called like you, and also made petitions, but in effect gets us nowhere! I know it's not fair or right, but until their 'policy' changes and they have someone that is more willing to hear our side of things and our information/knowledge then nothing will be done about any of the PAH stores.
 
Yep Kelly reckon you're right. Like so many other things in this country we've been brick walled.

I've had my say, done my bit for speaking up for the piggies, but I definately won't be visiting any PAH's again as I get too uptight and it takes me ages to calm down!

i go in PAH to get my food and i got two guinea there, the first was on her own with two rabbits, so had to have her, and then i got another but when i got her home, i realised she had a toe missing and nibbles out of her ear so i am so glad i did get her because she had obviously been picked on!
Everytime I go in there and i see poor guineas i want to buy them all, but at £19 each, i really could not afford to!

I agree with everyone that they need more training, the first pig i bought they didnt even ask me to write any details down and we didnt buy a hutch there, so they didnt ask if we had one, or if we had hay and bedding. They did tell us what food she was eating that was it!
Also i do not like the way they handle/hold them!

i did ask them if they had special clippers for guinea pigs, they used to do them, but apparently they do not anymore but they said to use a pair of normal nail clippers, is that right?
 
I'm not sure if I've been in Pets at Home but I went to a big pet store one day about 3 years ago that sounds like pets at home. They had a kind of garden at the back of the shop with the rabbits and guinea pigs inside them. My mum and dad were goin to get me a guinea pig but they changed their minds because I wanted a female and they had put a male in with her because she looked lonely.. She was also is with rabbits..
The woman in the pet shop I got Misty in didn't know his age but she had just taken over the shop so fair enough..
My mum said she'll take me to PAH one day when I feel better but I dunno if I want to go because I'll just end up wanting to take all the piggies home if there in with rabbits :(

If people keep buying from them the less likely they are to do anything about it I think..
 
If some one can draft a letter up saying that it isnt right putting gps with rabbits and we all send that letter to our local PAH, do you think that would help?

We have a Pets at Home store near us which i visit now and again for hay etc. I also take an interest in the guinea pigs and always have a look. So far i haven't any concerns, although the pigs are in with the rabbits they seem to keep in their separate areas.The pigs i saw seemed happy and had lots of fresh food and hay. And plenty of tubes and dens. The staff i saw seemed very attentive of the animals. I suppose it can all depend on the staff that are there and how good they are. Although i would have loved to buy them all up and given them a home, i never left the store, so far, being overly concerned about any pigs i saw. I can't comment on the quality of advice they give as have never been wittiness to them selling a pig.

Our local pet shop houses pigs and rabbits separately and seems confident in their care. They always take a name and address of the person buying an animal. So it is not all bad.
 
My local PAH is very good and so are the staff, perhaps I'm the lucky one. I don't get any animals from there, well I don't buy any from there not directly but I do end up with them. I'll explain, I run a rescue for pigs, rabbits and any small rodent. So people go in to PAH purchase their pet and take it home, then they get a problem with it either wrong sex, especially in rabbits or they've developed an allergy, so they go back to the shop. Of course it's not the shops policy to take back animals after a certain time. So they give them my number and hence we rescue the pet.

The good thing about this is that if they get any returned cages and hutches they also give me a ring, so so far this summer we've rescued 6 rabbits, 1 hamster, 1 guinea pig and received over £300 worth of returned equipment. Plus come Christmas they put out an extra bin for me so people can donate food etc.

Unfortunately they still keep rabbits with guinea pigs, but for the most part the staff do seem to know what they are doing.
 
Well when I e-mailed their hq a few years ago about keeping rabbits with guiena pigs they must have forwarded it to me local store and they accidently sent a reply to me. It said they thought people like me who complain wind them up and that they know a rabbit can kill a guinea pig with one kick but still keep them together in store and just dont advise people buy them together (which I know is untrue). It was great for me as it meant I could and did go to the local paper with it and had my story featured.

Unfortunately it doesnt matter how 'good' your local branch is. They are a chain so money they recieve in a good store goes back in to the same pocket as the stores that sell preganant pigs, keep fighing males together and kep guineas with rabbits and are involved in unpleasant maethods of breeding animals for stock.

The more people complain to them or better still boycott them the more likely it is they will wake up and take notice. There must have been many times campaigners for other causes thought it was hopeless but they persevered. It certainly makes me feel better to know I tried and to continue trying.

Incidently if anyone else has a testimonial about PAH them want me collect and to send a copy to HQ please mail me details together with your name and the name/loaction of the store you had a bad experiance of. The next lot of testomonials will be sent out shortly.
 
I've just been to my local PAH today to have a look at their rabbits & piggies as the last time i was there they were kept together.
Today there was only 1 piggie in the same enclosure as the rabbits but in a separate cage. I'm assuming it's because there was only 1, but don't know if i'm right.
It's been warm today and i was impressed that they had fans on, which the rabbits were loving; all sprawled out and dozing.
I was a bit peeved really that i didn't get a chance to chew someones ear!
Oh well mebbe next time! ;D ;D
 
I organise the guinea pig side of a rescue, about 30% of the piggies we get in are as a result of wrong sexing of piggies or from piggies being re homed who are already pregnant by this national pet store chain. I have people who ask for help re homing their unwanted litters who have been told by staff members of this store that female piggies cannot get pregnant whilst they are feeding litters and that you cannot sex pigs until they are 8 weeks old.

I do not buy anything at any of their stores, preferring to put any money I spend on animal products into pet shops which do not sell animals. The best way to deal with stores like these are to buy anything from them, if we all did this stores like this would go out of business.
 
a few years ago i had two missex buns from PAH ! & as such havent been there for ages as i am too weak willed, but i went in the summer to get a doggie item i couldnt get anywhere eles & ended up with 2 piggies who were about to go to an uscruplous faimly & a 'large piggie' which was actually a cashmere lop rabitt ! one of the poor piggies was extremly unwell & died 4 days later , i complained & took my vets statement to them to show that he really was unwell when i bought him, they did re-imburse all medical bills (over sixty pounds) but I'm sure they were just trying to palm me off because i knew what i was rtalking about ! they also asked me if i wanted another piggie free !! i didnt but i did get a pure bred castor rex bun instead......which makes me wonder are breeders selling there stock to PAH if they cant sell them normally? other than thinking my cashmere lop was a piggie they would have been unable to advise on grooming ect which is vital for cashmeres !
a few of my rescues have been from PAH & normally pregnate ect, its very sad but in our area there isnt much choice to buy pet supplies from there most of our little shops can be nearly twice as dear or dont carry stock !
 
Went to our local PAH store today and the pens have been split so that rabbit and Guinea pigs are in separate areas. So perhaps they are listening to all the people who have complained :)
