Has anyone had a guinea pig with a nosebleed? My husband and I were away this weekend with the kids and left the pigs in the care of my mom and dad. I just talked to my mom, and she told me that last night, my older girl, Linney, had a nosebleed. Apparently my mom went to pick her up and she ran away, and when my mom got her she realized that she was bleeding. Once they got her mopped up, my mom was able to see that it was bright red blood from one nostril, and she sounded rattly breathing and was blowing blood out of her nostril. Naturally my mom freaked out and tried to call the vet (who was closed.) She decided to try to get it under control before calling the emergency vet (who probably doesn't know anything about guinea pigs anyhow) and with a paper towel she managed to get the bleeding to stop in about 15-20 minutes. After that, Linney went back to behaving the way she normally does. Apparently she was fine overnight and has been fine all day today as well. I will get her back tomorrow morning, I think I'm largely freaking because I haven't had a chance to see her myself yet!

So has anyone run into this as well? Neither pig has ever had a nosebleed before. I'm hoping she just had a hay poke or something like that, since she was running away at the time and ran through hay. Anything I should look for as far as an underlying problem instead of an injury? I worry about her because she's getting older (she about 5.5 years now.)

Just to clarify- when she sounded rattly breathing, it was from blood in her nasal cavities, not noise from her lungs. I guess 'bubbly' is more the word than rattly.

Poor girl, it sounds like a general nosebleed just like humans get or like you said she might have cut it on something. The noise might have been some of the dried blood, however if it continues you should take her to a vet. I hope she's better and the noise stops xx

There was a pig on here a few months back that had had one and they were ok but I have not experienced it with my own pigs. I will try to find the thread.

Our late TomTom had a nosebleed caused by a hay poke. we know it was a hay poke because we had to pull the piece of hay out.

It could be due to a hay poke, but please have it checked out by a vet if it isn't or if the bleeding both sided!

Just a thought but could it be heat related? I've known a few hoomans with no past history to get spontaneous nosebleeds over the summer when it gets got.

She's home now, and seems fine. Breathing is fine, she is eating fine, bleeding has not recurred. I can't see any evidence of injury, but that doesn't mean a lot, given their tiny nostrils and the fact that it had 24 hours to heal before I got a look at it. Right now I am just going to watch her closely and if anything recurs we will be off the vet ASAP. Just wanted to post an update!

I wouldn't think so, because it hasn't been that hot here, and my mom's house is probably cooler than mine. I know whether conditions play a role in nosebleeds with people, two of my kids get spontaneous nosebleeds in the winter months (because the air is dry.)
