Has anyone had a guinea pig with a nosebleed? My husband and I were away this weekend with the kids and left the pigs in the care of my mom and dad. I just talked to my mom, and she told me that last night, my older girl, Linney, had a nosebleed. Apparently my mom went to pick her up and she ran away, and when my mom got her she realized that she was bleeding. Once they got her mopped up, my mom was able to see that it was bright red blood from one nostril, and she sounded rattly breathing and was blowing blood out of her nostril. Naturally my mom freaked out and tried to call the vet (who was closed.) She decided to try to get it under control before calling the emergency vet (who probably doesn't know anything about guinea pigs anyhow) and with a paper towel she managed to get the bleeding to stop in about 15-20 minutes. After that, Linney went back to behaving the way she normally does. Apparently she was fine overnight and has been fine all day today as well. I will get her back tomorrow morning, I think I'm largely freaking because I haven't had a chance to see her myself yet!
So has anyone run into this as well? Neither pig has ever had a nosebleed before. I'm hoping she just had a hay poke or something like that, since she was running away at the time and ran through hay. Anything I should look for as far as an underlying problem instead of an injury? I worry about her because she's getting older (she about 5.5 years now.)
