Hi everybody, i have a pig (almost 2yo) that is having today his third general anaesthesia in the last month and a half. He had dental issues and his teeth were trimmed twice and even tho he seemed to eat much better after surgeries he than became worse. I must mention he is not eating hay and if he does it's only the soft dried grass and not the hay straws. Today i took him back for a xray and i mentioned to the doctor that at this moment he is not eating absolutly anything (i hand feed him) and since the last trim his poops have been all different from each other and sometimes he poops like 3 pellets at a time that are stuck together, so i asked her to do a belly xray as well and she recomanded a CT. In a couple of hours i will go pick him up but i have a question for owners of pigs with dental issues: if your pig recovered after surgery and he returned to the bad habits (like not eating hay) how often would you take them for a trim? How many anaesthesia is considered too much and affecting the pig? I do not know what else to do to him, i am disperate. I changes the doctors between the two trims but exotic vets are very rare in Romania. Current it's an exotic vet and i saw people taking their rodents to her so i assume she must know more about rodents than a clasic vet.

Little update, just got back from the vet and they wouldn't allow me to take him home. They said the CT showed one of the molars growing towards the eye and it needs removing. He has another molar with the same problem but not as concerning as this one. And an abcess might be there too. The CT also showed he has quite many gases in the stomach but the vet said it is a bit explainable regarding he isn't eating pretty much anything, that the few food he gets starts fermenting in his stomach. How concerned should i be about this ... bloating? (Is this even bloating?) I am very very concerned about him and very scared but i know that if he doesn't have the surgery he will die eventually by not eating and the molar maybe breaking through his little chin. They will remove only one molar and the other one need checking up every month ... there is a really difficult pathway ahead of us and i already hate it 😢 she also said that the molar won't grow back again. Did anyone who encounter this problem can advise? I just wannt go and buy another 100 guinea pigs to compensate the scare and guilt i feel right now

Oh no ☹️. I'm sorry. I can't offer any advice, but wanted to offer support. Hopefully someone with dental piggy experience will answer soon! Hugs to you both ❤️.

I’m no expert when it comes to teeth, but when he’s had his dentals have they not touched his molars?

Is he being syringe fed with critical care? It sounds like he may be going into GI stasis, have the vets mentioned about that? Have they given medicine for his stomach or advised on the gases etc?

His molars were trimmed. I used to syringe feed him and after he woke up the doc said thay gave him some food from the syringe but i do not know what they will do this night, if someone will feed him with a syringe or will just leave some vegs in his cage to eat ... i really do not know and i am concerned. They dis not advise about gas but i will ask tomorrow

I am so sorry you are going through this.

Ask if they are going to syringe feed him through the night. He will need gut stimulants such as Metoclopramide and/or rantadine (Zantac) they are fit motility drugs

(emeprid) to keep the guys moving while he is not eating. Also a pain killer metacam to give at home.

Sending lots of love x

Hi!

I am very sorry. Could you please add your country, state/province or UK county to location in your account details (via clicking on your username) to allow us to taialor any recommendations to what is available and relevant where you are striaght away instead of keeping any advice as general as possible since we have members and enquiries from all over the world.

The bloating is indeed caused by lack of fibre passing through. Syringe feeding, painkiller and gut stimulants should take care of it. You are not dealing with a severe bloat, which can kill, but a secondary problem that can be got on top of once enough food gets into him.

My love lost the battle 😢😢😢i am so empty and i cannot undestand, my brain cannot squeeze the fact that i brought him alive to the clinic and i took him dead. I talked with the vet today and she said he was weak and we should pospone the surgery on monday and that i take him home and keep feeding him. When i went to pick him up only students were at the clinic and when i asked for him, the boy went in and then came back and said we need to wait. 15 min after the girl came down saying he is in cardio respiratory failure and they are trying to bring him back but after 15 min she came saying he was dead. I don't understand what happened, CT and anaesthetia were yesterday and except the fact he did not eat by himself, he was very ok (before intervention) I called the vet and she suggested we autopsy him but i don't want him tormented even after he is dead, i cannot picture him being open, i can't ... i just want to burry him. I feel guilty that i did not take him home yesterday ... i am spechless, he was so young, not even 2 yo and now i'll miss him forever. I feel guilty that he died alone surrounded by ppl he did not know and being scared instead of being with me. I hate this all thing and know i didn't deserve him, he was too good for me
