We have a recently bereaved guinea pig who we're keen to find a companion for as soon as possible as he is not doing well on his own.

Has anyone had any experience of finding a companion pig during coronavirus?

We want to do this in the safest way for everyone/everypig! I have a huge preference for adoption but if it comes to it I will consider stores but only if all other options are exhausted!
One of our local rescues is still doing appointments and I'm waiting to hear back. Others have closed for the time being but I have reached out to them just in case they have any suggestions for us.

I’m sorry for your loss. I think rescues are not dating at the moment during lockdown. But there’s no harm in contacting a few more to see. I hope your boy can hold out but if he is ‘wilting away’ from lack of companionship then needs must.

So sorry you’ve lost one of your piggies x
We managed to adopt a young neutered boar in early January, the day before lockdown after we lost our boar Ted in December. The shelter is open for adoptions, all done online and over the shelter gate.
We also managed to adopt two sows just before lockdown1 last year after Ted lost his companion Bill last February.
They are not doing bonding though, good luck hope you can find a little friend for your boy x

Hi!

I am very sorry.

Unless your girl is pining acutely, it is better to be patient and wait to date her at one of our recommended rescues. the pandemic is a real pain but you are getting a lot more service and peace of mind than when you buy a companion on spec, not knowing whether acceptance will happen or what else a bought baby is coming home with.
Rescue Locator (our carefully vetted good welfare standard rescues, which we can guarantee that you are in safe hands with)

New guinea pigs: Sexing, vet checks&customer rights, URI, ringworm and parasites (the most common pitfalls for owners with newly bought pet shop or breeder piggies or privately acquired second-hand piggies)

Quick update on this in case anyone is in a similar situation - I sent an email round to some rescues basically asking for advice and not if they had any available and it turns out they all had some piggies looking for companions!

the larger rescue has one available and we were able to go there and try bonding them - they seemed fine so we will be bringing him home today (he had a vet appointment hence not taking him home on the same day)

Aw, that’s lovely news! remember to give your cage a thorough clean so everything is neutral. Looking forward to seeing the happy new couple x
