Piggy going under GA

Not sure what this is about as I don't believe the OP stayed in a hotel. Also I don't think the hotel would cover it (or that it would be fair to expect them to) if you couldn't sleep because you were worried about your pet. I think it's designed for not being able to sleep due to noise or comfort of the bed etc
Miis.understanding sorry. I'm on about something else. I wasnt talking about not sleeping because of being worried about your pet. That would absolutely not get u a refund lol. No worries anyway i have confused myself

I have taken your advice furryfriends and just syringe fed Graham. He has had roughly 10/15ml in all. He wasn't too happy with me giving it to him, but I feel better knowing that he has had something.

I will offer him veg in the morning as normal as soon as I get up and leave him for an hour to see if he has any. Then before work when I give him his medication (pain killer and ranitidide) I will give him some more critical care.

Really hope he make progress, it seems slow at the moment. He's usually eating away at his hay, but he still seems uninterested and wanting to hide and sleep.

Not out of the woods yet. Vet wants to see him again on Thursday. Depending on how he is will depend on whether vet will do x ray and scans as the next form of investigation/treatment.

I'm just worried that the critical care is staying in his throat, rather than reaching his tummy. This is what happened last time with food and liquid feed.

Fingers crossed for my little piggy :-(

I've tried offering it on a spoon and he hides his head away. Vet suggested putting it in his food bowl to see if he will lap it up, that is also unsuccessful.

We even swapped from "recovery liquid feed" to "critical care". He's very uninterested. The only way is to force feed him. I feel so cruel doing it, I have to remind myself that I'm being cruel to be kind.

I just hope it is reaching his gut this time.

Now eaten a nugget then grabbed a celery leaf stalk and took it under his shelter. I can hear him crunching on it!

Sorry for all the posts, just feeling relieved to see him having something!

I've sprinkled pro-biotic onto his veg (given by the vet) so hopefully he is getting what he needs and it is going down.

Emma I feel you right now and I really hope he picks up soon. Keep going with him but if he really doesn't look like he's touching anything I would call your vets for an earlier appointment or at least advice over the phone. Is he on pain relief?

Ooooo posted at the same time lol

He is on pain relief, it's called metacam. To be taken once a day.

That's good, if he doesn't start eating more on his own you can ask for the metacam to be split to twice a day as piggies have a fast metabolism. Some vets still don't like to do this but the more knowledgeable ones are good with it

Ive tried googling whether there are side effects but had no joy finding any. Hoping this is a good thing!

There won't be side effects from it so don't panic. Tastes of honey too so most piggies love it. My Donald doesn't but he's the first i've seen that with. My late bumble was on it daily due to arthritis and she used to try and run off with the syringe :))

Morning

I'm still very worried about Graham.

I half expected him to greet us with wheaks this morning when we got up but he stayed sleeping under his shelter.

I tempted him with some spinach and basil (pro-biotic sprinkled on) this worked and he came up onto his shelf and nibbled on the basil and some hay (very small nibbles, hardly anything in all honesty) and had some water. Then back to hiding.

I gave it some time then got him out for his medicine of metacam and ranitidine. He took these well, then out of the 15ml of critical care, he has had 10ml because a lot of it went on the cushion and me!

I've noticed on his nose a little brown scab type thing. I tried to rub it off, thinking it was some friend up critical care from last night's feed. It wouldn't come away. I've attached a picture.

I closely watched him and he seems to be taking a long time to chew and eat food still.

I may have to call the vet today for advice, unless I am expecting too much too soon?

Anything out of character should be taken seriously and vet advise should be sought if you are at all worried. Bear in mind that after GA piggies can feel a bit woozy for up to 48 hours or so. This can differ between piggies of course and how much GA they had and how long they were "under" for. Christian was on GA for over an hour and wasn't feeling right for around 36 hours. I was worried about him and took him back to the vet.

I've always found that the piggies eat well, immediately after a dental, but then Simon does the dentals without GA, so they haven't got to recover from that. Did they say why they thought the food had collected in his mouth? This would suggest either overgrown teeth at the very back of the mouth, or an oral thrush.

I would call the vets for a chat. The reluctance to eat would concern me and if he carries on like this he's going to be a lot weaker by Thursdays appointment

Vet wants to see him again. There at 6.15.

Just don't know what else to do. There is something very wrong with Graham, he is not himself at all. Just got home from work and his food and hay is untouched. No greeting of excitable wheaks when I opened the door either. Don't think I have heard him wheak in at least 3 days.

I'm so worried. What is wrong with him? :-( :-( :-(

Oh poor you and poor Graham! You must be very worried about him. I'm thinking of you both. Sending healing vibes your way. Have a hug cos you need one! :hug:In fact have several cos one hug is never enough!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

It sounds like there is still a problem with teeth or mouth. Are you syringe feeding him little and often? When piggies are like this, I feed a couple of mls, then wait 5 to 10 mins and feed another couple and so on. You get a lot in over time, that way and you can be sure it is all going in. Are you using a 1 ml syringe with the end cut off? I am thinking it sounds like you're using one of those 15 ml ones, which really aren't suitable for piggies, particularly ones who are quite weak.

I am using a 15ml one. See pic. Just about to feed him, which is why it is full! I put in half to 1ml at a time to allow him time to swallow.

He had 10ml this morning and I'm about to give him another feed now, then will give him more at tea time and again before I go to bed.

When he opens his mouth it does go in yes. He doesn't like it but I am eager to keep him alive so playing some tough love.

So since his 10ml and meds this morning, all he has eaten today since 8am is a nibble of carrot and a green bean. Not much.
