Piggy overnight at the vets & tests today

He hasn't pooped or weed all day yet. He's just facing away from everything in his cage to the wall. It's a massive struggle to get him to eat any recovery food as he's fighting it or drooling it out. Only manage about 5mls each sitting every 2 hours coz of that and a little bit of water.

I don't understand, he was ok yesterday and during the night 😪😪

The out of hours mobile number conn cred but went to a voicemail, I left a message hours ago and they still haven't got back In touch. Hubby just rang again, went back to voicemail.

He's just on a call to vetsnow, gonna ask if they can prescribe some gut motility drugs or something? They aren't exotics so I just don't understand why Ashleigh have this vets as as their our of hours one. Gonna have to take him there

He has "cerenia" but I can't find what on earth this is used for in guinea pigs?

Yeh have attempted syringe feeds every 2 hours all day but can only get 5mls in him at a time because he fights it like mad or drools it out

I’ve only ever given Cerenia to my cat. It’s to stop nausea and vomiting. Not sure of it’s relevance for guinea pigs.

Cerenia works as an anti-inflammatory for the bladder. Both that and metacam (anti-inflammatory and pain relief) provide double cover almost. We have used cerenia many times and it’s brilliant for bladders so please don’t worry about that.

Ok thanks, I thought it was a gut motility drug yesterday when they prescribed it, they did mention to get his "guts moving" so that's why I thought that.

On way to vetsnow hopefully they can prescribe som motility drugs

Oh right that’s interesting to know. I’ve only ever used it with cats who are nauseous and vomiting.

It might work for other things as well, I’m not sure, but it definitely works for bladder inflammation. Had a few bladder pigs myself unfortunately. It can take a long time for the inflammation to settle but with the metacam and cerenia together he should be very well covered. Hope he will be ok.

I’m pleased you are getting him checked out. I had a boar that needed a stone removal and he sadly didn’t recover well from the anaesthetic. Your boy may need lots of help in the coming days. Keep us posted on what the vet says. What pain meds is he on?

I'm sorry to read things aren't going well at the moment, I hope the vet can help.

Crazy thought maybe, but can guinea pigs eat baby food, or maybe just blend/mash up some veg?

I had a very poorly hamster once, she was put on critical care by the vet, they also suggested getting baby food for her, had to be careful but I did find a baby food with no added sugar, additives etc etc that was just veg or fruit.
My hamster wasn't overly keen on the critical care, but she loved the baby food.

Just trying to think of a way to get him eating again.

Update: vetsnow, I thought were quite good for non exotics. They gave him an ultrasound to check his bladder which was good. He wasn't dehydrated, they listened to his guts and heart, and checked his wound all were good.

He did however get the nystagmus again whilst there possibly due to the very bright lights. She looked at his eyes but the glaucoma device wasn't working so they couldn't rule an acute episode of that out, but could see there were no eyes ulcers. They recommended we dont give the antibiotics for the day so give his body one less thing to process.

When we got back Ashleigh vets rang us at about 10pm, and we arranged to go In today.

We syringe fed and watered him every 2.5 hours through the day and night in shifts yday and by 5am this morn he was eating the greens/veg we gave him himself, nipping us when trying to feed (that's his usual feisty self as he has always hated his chin and cheeks being touched) which is a big improvement from the day. He's carried on eating like this, and ready grass and happily taking water syringes (though he still hates receiving syringe feeds). His eyes are clearer than yesterday too. He also had loads of poops in his bed this morning yey!

Took him to our vets this morning, and they checked his eyes which is not glaucoma.. but they don't really have an explanation for his eyes turning white. They said he may have neuro issues that come and go now, or it could just be he's still got some of the anesthetic running though him which has caused it.. they don't know either. They said we should restart the antibiotics tomorrow and prescribed the eye lube stuff... but I'm half convinced thats caused his eye issues in the first place so I'm really reluctant to put it on.
He has not touched much hay since being back and he's been asleep since coming back. Gonna feed & water him in half an hour.

@Wiebke is flibreplex a recovery feed? He absolutely fights the SS recovery feed, his usual mushed up pellets AND the emeraid so I'm struggling to get much fiber in him I think (he had 5mls mushed pellets per feed and 2mls when he was eating greens/veg) I don't want to give him bloat but the only thing he willingly eats is the greens we've got him (combo of bits of parsley, coriander, basil, pea shoots, spring greens, broccoli, peppers, basil, lettuce) and redigrass and fresh grass (we barely have much grass in our garden and plus he only picks a few strands of grass out) - broccoli is his favorite out of all of them, and he will eat the natures own oat biscuit which he chomps down, and won't touch his pellets, and I'm 80% sure he hasn't eaten any hay

Thanks

Hi

Fibreplex is not a recovery feed but enhanced probiotics.

Try to mush up some pellets or mash a bit of banana and mix that into the feed and see whether that is going down better. You will however find that the pellet fibre and any banana are a lot rougher so you will have to cut off the tip of the syringe as shown in our Syringe feeding guide:
All About Syringe Feeding and Medicating Guinea Pigs with Videos and Pictures

Glad that he hasn't got glaucoma and there is nothing serious going on in the gut or urinary tract.

All the best with the feeding. It can be tough when the gut microbiome is disturbed by antibiotics.

Have you considered poo soup?

Ah thanks.

I have tried him with his usual pellet mush but he absolutely fights that too, and tried to mush banana in as well but it still didn't tempt him. Now he's feeling a bit better I'll add a bit of banana I to it again. I also have Pro C probiotics that I have put in his water and syringe fed him that too.

Vets said he was most likely off his food because of the nystagmus or neurological issue which would make him feel nausea's most likely (as he had marbocyl last month for the "cyst" and he was ok on it)

I am very sorry. Are you controlling his weight by weighing first thing in the morning so you know whether and how much he is actually eating by himself and can tailor the amount and frequency of any syringe feeds accordingly?
This guide here explain how to monitor weight loss (or gain) and how to be manage any transition phases: Weight and Weight Loss Explained: BMI, Weighing, Poos and Feeding Support

Has your piggy got a healthy companion who can donate some absolutely fresh live gut microbiome? That is the most effective way of propping up the microbiome. Please follow the recipe. You can find it both in the 'poo soup' link as well as in the syringe feeding guide link.
