Pink urine

Hello! I’m really worried right now. Although I am experienced with guinea pigs, I am not a pro. My guinea pig recently peed pink a few days ago then it stopped and returned to their usual color. It started being pink when I slowly adjusted them to their new pellets. 1B2B8158-3FB2-44A6-891A-06C8010D0338.webpThey loved it but shortly after both started peeing pink. I decided to change the pellets back to their usual ones and the color had stopped. However today they started peeing pink again. I read that it could be gallbladder stones and the pink was blood. I would love to visit a nearby vet however Coronavirus in the United States is really terrible right now and I wouldn’t want to risk my guinea pig’s lives unless I am sure. Does anyone know what happened? Thank you so much. Both boar’s weights are good and they’ve been behaving really well. Hi there, I would suggest not giving them the feed that looks to have the bright colours in it? As you say it stops when they stop. I suppose it’s bit like humans eating beetroot if you get my drift...

As long as they are not showing signs of being in discomfort I would stay away from the food with the bright speckles?

Thank you for replying! I stopped feeding them that brand when it turned pink. It’s been a week since I fed them “eco nutrition” and it’s starting again although I haven’t fed them it.
 
Are you feeding any other natural foods that may cause discolouration? If you rule that out and still no joy, it may be safe to secure a veterinarian consultation.

I don’t think so. All I fed them this week is a few shaved carrot pieces, lettuce, grapes, watermelon, basil, Timothy hay, and Kaytee pellets.
 
You haven’t feed them beetroot or similar, have you? I know this sounds really obvious but it‘s happened to me multiple times that I fed beetroot and then nearly had a freak out when they suddenly peed pink 😂
 
I would check this out with the vet as a precautionary measure. .... just another consideration would be, is their a reaction with the urine and the bedding thus creating a colour change so it looks like urine is pink? Either way, let the vet check them just in case. Guineapigs health can deteriorate really quickly so best to check, as you say you are trying out the variables to see if it goes and so far it has not ? Best of luck , hope piggies are okay .

Will do! I don’t think the bedding caused it because usually the urine would be around a light orange brownish color. Thank you so much for the help!
 
Please take your boys to the vet. We can’t diagnose through photos, and we’re not qualified vets either. Try and do it soon as possible, considering it’s been happening on and off for a while. Do they squeak when toileting?

Hi!

Please stop feeding this kind of mix with artificial colours and seeds ASAP. Whatever the label says, it is most definitely NOT suitable for guinea pigs! Scientific research has shown that mixes like these are bad rabbit health and are very much life shortening - and the same goes for guinea pigs. Please always opt for pellets that are all the same and that do not contain seeds, which are too fattening for guinea pigs. Any artificial colours should be a big warning sign for sub-standard feed. :(

Please see a vet if you see more pink pees after stopping the dry mix (in case they are caused by the colouring in the feed), especially when they are accompanied by squeaking when peeing and pooing. Your guinea pig has in this case most likely urinary tract infection or cystitis.

Okay! I made an appointment with the vet today for tomorrow afternoon. They have not showed signs of discomfort during toileting such as squeaking.

Alright thank you! I contacted the vet and made an appointment although they both have not squeaked or showed signs of discomfort while toileting. I’ll update soon on what happened :)
 
I agree that you need to get them to the vets.

Those pellets don’t look very healthy, they have lots of colourful bits in and seeds. It annoys me how people make unhealthy foods and say it’s suitable for guinea pigs, I once bought a seedy, sugary treat for my piggies because they sold it at the pet store, and as a result my piggies got quite chubby.
