Following the sad threads on here regarding piggies dying in the sub zero temeratures I received a phone call from a distraught lady this morning. She has always kept her 4 piggies outside but in a warm insulated shed without any problems. As the weather is so very cold just now she put a calor gas heater in the shed last night, turned down very low to keep her pigs a little warmer. Sadly during the early hours, she thinks the bag of hay fell off the shelf and onto the fire. Neighbours alerted when they returned home late and saw flames but she was only able to save one pig and he is now with her vet but there is not much hope as he is quite badly burned. The other 3 were already burned to death.

The poor woman is beside herself with grief :( - she was only doing what she thought was best for her pigs and trying to keep them warm.

I told her about the forum and she asked me to post this in the hope that no other pigs will suffer the same fate as hers.

bloody heck, that's awful - she was obvioulsy trying to do the right thing by keeping them warm, but ended in tragedy - poor woman x

That's such a sad tale. She was doing her best wasn't she for her pigs. It may not have been the wisest but her intentions were lovely, don't be harsh on her pigpig.

Also if you read the story she had 4

Very very sad. :(

I am so sorry - what a sad story!

Sending my vibes to the poorly survivor!

not going to write my first thoughts! but using gas fires are also bad idea due to carbon monoxide if there is insufficient oxygen... also there are so many flammable things in a guinea pig hutch or shed it is a really silly idea! If you want to keep them warm please buy a heat emitter much safer!

I am really sorry for the loss of the piggies and i hope the other one manages to pull through!

oh the poor things!she had good intentions but it was stupid although we have all done stupid things in the past!she must be really punishing herself right now as she sounds like a caring owner

Oh this is such a sad story. The poor lady could never have imagined this would happen. So many people pay no attention to keeping their piggies warm, and for someone who was trying to do her best for them, she must be heartbroken. xx

What a terrible tragedy. :(

Hope the poor one pulls through although being badly burned, it may not be best for the poor piggy if he/she does make it. :(

Poor, poor piggies. I'd always use an oil filled radiator. Electric fan/convector heaters are all very well but are a huge fire hazard if anything falls on them. :(

What a terrible thing to happen :( I can't imagine the guilt the poor woman must be feeling, and how much the pigs will have suffered.
I'll be thinking of her today, and the piggie that she still has. I hope he's not suffering too much. </3

On no:0

send her my love and hugs, she was only doign what she thought best, they were so lucky to have a caring owner thinking what was best for them:0

RIP little piggies, and crossing everything for the little piggy at the vets

That poor lady...so sorry that she lost her guinea pigs in such a horrible way.....and she was just trying to keep them warm....and she is brave that she told us of the damage that has been done....x its such a great shame

That is so sad, it sounds like she had the right idea and the guineas best interests at heart. I really hope her remaining piggie will be ok. :(

Poor woman.
You can't blame her for trying to keep her pigs warm.
Sending healing vibes for the piggy in the vets x

I feel really sorry for this poor lady and i would be beset with grief if it was me but you need to be a thinking owner aswell as a caring one unfortunately

Such a sad thing to have to happen.

I'm glad you posted though to give those who are concerned and looking for solutions to keeping their piggies warm, where there is probably no electricity supply to re think using a gas/open flame heater.

RIP wee piggies, here's hoping the other one pulls through such a traumatic event.

This is so sad, really really upsetting. Those poor piggies and that poor woman, she was trying to do her best by her little ones... RIP little ones x

Keep thinking about these poor piggies and the poor owner - bless her. Glad it's here as a warning - she was only doing what she thought was best for the piggies. How awful

That poor lady, what a horrible thing to have happen. My heart goes out to her and her piggys. Any news on whether the one left survived?

why oh why dont people think..........hay and a heater? a gas one at that.

I believe the oil filled radiators are the best if you have hay in the shed with the piggies. Being a rescue I have one shed for storage and soon will have a large summer house, insulated, power, heat, light where the piggies will be.

The poor piggies that died RIP and the poor one that is badly burnt I hope he makes it.

Oh my gosh what a terrible story! poor, poor piggies and how guilty the poor person must feel. keeping my fingers crossed that the injured piggy pulls through xx

oh this is so upsetting :0:0:0 rest in peace piggies. and hope the little one at the vets is ok. :0

oh its so sad, my heart goes out the to lady she must be devastated to lose her piggies this way, fingers crossed for the remaining piggie at the vets xx
