Hi all,
Only had the the 2 female guineas, Esme and Fidget for 3 weeks as we are fostering to help out a friend.
We have a set up as follows:

A large homemade plywood box 3ft x 2ft approx where the guineas sleep and a run which is permanently attached and open, of about 6ft x 3ft.

Inside the sleeping are we are currently lining the bottom (it as a large tray that fits tight inside the box as the base) with several layers of newspaper, some small bits of cut up fleece, and meadow hay. The far end has a small cat bed with lots of fleece layers and some more meadow hay.
The run is lined with a tarp, then newspaper and some meadow hay in some areas as well as small patches of fleece - with cardboard boxes, some hammocky type things, large tubes and a little house to hide in.

This is indoors by the way!

The problem is that newspaper isnt absorbant and we need something to absorb the urine, but what? We;re having to change the bedding every night because its full of poo and its wet - this goes for virtually the whole of the inside of the box - and i dont want the poor piggies to be sitting in this for the day.
I'm thinking - is the box too big for a sleeping area? do all piggies wee in their beds? sorry if that sounds like a silly questions! but we are used to rats and mice and its our first piggy experience :)

We've tried to designate a section at the far end of the run, which has extra paper and extra hay - and the piggies seem to be weeing and pooing more there. But i think mainly, the problem is their sleeping area. We've just about managed to get enough fleecey bits to be able to wash them daily and change them...but its not ideal and I'm wondering if we're not supplying them with something they need?

Id like to buy something in bulk perhaps online - any suggested used website would be gratefully received :)

Thanks all x@)

Oh, i forgot to say that we did a trial run with some wood based cat litter which we picked up at ESK (a bit like wilkies) and put it down inside the box. It DID absorb, but i was a bit concerned that it was rough on the piggies feet>....

Thanks Joey&Gizmo!

I've had success with the vetbed. I bought a 2ft x 3ft roll for £12 and Ive cut it to size, so we have enough for 2 changes (just in their sleeping area)..
It seems to have worked! The piggies are spending more time in bed, ive noticed too - so they must be liking it! It definately keeps the moisture tucked away (now I'm starting to sound like an advert for nappies!)..

Thanks for the link - I'm definately going to explore other areas too, as back up :)

The vet bed won't absorb it just pushes it down and the top stays dry it also shrinks in the dryer:( you could put puppy pad's underneath they are great but expensive, or mattress topper's as they are airy inside it absorb's the pee then dries so no smell i sew them to fleece and make cage liner's

Wow thats a great idea! mattress toppers....Thanks for that.
I think i used the wrong expression when I said absorbs. I meant, the same as you, it sinks to the bottom, so that the top is dry - we are changing them every 2 days, so we are rotating the vetbed. We're drying them on the radiator too so no room for shrinkage, so to speak lol.

Yeah i found out the hard way lol i love vet bed it is soo plush but cage liner's last a week for me i have 5 pig's in the cage on the video and as they are fitted i just sweep poo's out every day here's the one's i made my sister
