Hi all,
Only had the the 2 female guineas, Esme and Fidget for 3 weeks as we are fostering to help out a friend.
We have a set up as follows:
A large homemade plywood box 3ft x 2ft approx where the guineas sleep and a run which is permanently attached and open, of about 6ft x 3ft.
Inside the sleeping are we are currently lining the bottom (it as a large tray that fits tight inside the box as the base) with several layers of newspaper, some small bits of cut up fleece, and meadow hay. The far end has a small cat bed with lots of fleece layers and some more meadow hay.
The run is lined with a tarp, then newspaper and some meadow hay in some areas as well as small patches of fleece - with cardboard boxes, some hammocky type things, large tubes and a little house to hide in.
This is indoors by the way!
The problem is that newspaper isnt absorbant and we need something to absorb the urine, but what? We;re having to change the bedding every night because its full of poo and its wet - this goes for virtually the whole of the inside of the box - and i dont want the poor piggies to be sitting in this for the day.
I'm thinking - is the box too big for a sleeping area? do all piggies wee in their beds? sorry if that sounds like a silly questions! but we are used to rats and mice and its our first piggy experience
We've tried to designate a section at the far end of the run, which has extra paper and extra hay - and the piggies seem to be weeing and pooing more there. But i think mainly, the problem is their sleeping area. We've just about managed to get enough fleecey bits to be able to wash them daily and change them...but its not ideal and I'm wondering if we're not supplying them with something they need?
Id like to buy something in bulk perhaps online - any suggested used website would be gratefully received
Thanks all x@)
