One of my two guinea pigs passed away around two weeks ago, leaving my other guinea pig alone. My guinea pig that passed Oreo, I've had for months now, we got him a friend, Moose, because we heard it was best for them to have company. The two of them got along right away and Moose was the dominant one since Oreo was around 4 months and Moose was 8. They knew eachother for about a week or two before Oreo passed from unknown causes. Moose did not seem very upset, he was eating, moving around and seemed somewhat normal. A few days after, we got him a friend, Pistachio. Pistachio is around 6 months old and him and Moose do not get along at all. Pistachio rumble struts around Moose and Moose has lunged at him every time we put them together and has even pulled out his hair from biting. Moose has also become very aggressive, even with me and my brother. He chatters his teeth with me when I try picking him up and he does the same thing to Pistachio before he lunges at him. It's been around a week and I've tried everything to get them to get along. Ive had them both in my lap to just be around each other, I've put them in a neutral space to get along, and now they're in the same cage with a separator. Neither of them are giving up dominance and I'm not sure if they will ever get along. It feels very wrong to have to take pistachio back to the shelter after bringing him into a new home, but I don't want either of them to get sick from the stress of not being the boss. Please give me any advice you can. Sorry for the length.

I’m sorry to hear of your losses.

I’m sorry that Pistachio and Moose do not get along. They are both teenagers and unfortunately bonding two teenage boars can be a tricky experience due to their hormones. They are sadly not compatible and I’m afraid there is nothing you can do to make them like each other.
They will need to live in separate but side by side cages. This will mean they can interact between the bars for company but they don’t need to try to be friends. They can never share a space. They will not get sick because of this.

Each of their cages needs to measure a minimum of 120x60cm.

Two of my boars don’t get on and they have to live as neighbours in side by side cages. They are much happier like this.

I was thinking about leaving them side by side because each side is more then big enough, I just didn't know if that would be a good enough source of company since they wouldn't be able to really be around eachother. And thank you for your advice! I appreciate it a lot.

Don’t worry, it is absolutely fine to keep them side by side. Through the bar interaction provides them with companionship and a way to interact without having the stress of sharing a territory.

I am sorry to hear your boys are did not get along.
We lost our piggy Hector 🌈in February. Hamish our other guinea pig went on a piggy date at the rescue, and seemed to make friends with Billy. Unfortunately a week & a bit in it was obvious that the boys couldn’t work things out.
Hamish and Billy now live happily side by side.
It took a few weeks for them to settle into side by side living, but now they are happy in their own space with another guinea pig near by.
I hope your boys settle and enjoy living as neighbours too.
