Please help save boris

When Ginger lost the use of her back legs she developed a scab on her back leg. I think it may have been like a pressure sore where she was lying on her same side, like humans get when they are unable to walk around and stay in bed. It's only a guess though :)
 
hi um well its Boris's front leg and the poor baby cant lie on anything other than his tummy because of the splint so i dont think its that but he isnt complaining about it so it might not be anything to worry about
 
For some reason there is alwasy one little piggy who likes to keep us on our toes more than the others! @) Boris may be taking to all the attention & he is trying to work out how to get more attention! Cheeky little fellow! inbreeding

Tell him to behave or I will send my Legolas over (airmail of course!) to come & sort him out! Legolas has the ability to keep my other pigs in line, so I am sure he will tell Boris to behave for you! pow-pow

We are sending extra hugs & squeaks his way today as I am off until Tuesday evening! So we are sending a week's worth of 'get well' to Boris! Hopefully there won't be anymore scares whe I get back next week!

Looking forward to hearing how he's doing when I get back!

Boris bleeding

hi recently i posted about boris's bald patch just went to top up his food and the bald patch is now bleeding here is a pic of the patch and what it looks like now he doesnt seem to happy about it, he has had some metacam and salt water put on it.I think it may be his splint rubbing any ideas on what i can do until i can get him to the vet:(I'm quite worried

Gosh, that does look sore, poor Boris! Is he able to scratch with his back feet at all? He may be scratching at this area in irritation of the splint - although how feasible this is depends entirely on his range of movement.

In UK, we have a baby nappy rash cream called Bepanthen - do you know if this is available in Australia? It is a good one for applying to sores to soothe and protect.
 
hi ccc4 its definantly not his back feet he only has minimal movements and he is perminantly stretched out like a hotdog so he couldnt reach anyway.We do have bepanthen here its quite common actually, so i might get some are there any guide lines to using it on piggys,oh and i can see that its the splint that is rubbing we need to get it cut around his leg to stop rubbing but its good friday today so the vet isnt open till tomorrow.Thanks for the help
 
Forgot to add that he can pull himself around with hs front legs hence the sore on his leg, but i cant restrict his movements anymore he is already in a smaller cage, and the only moving ive seen him do is to the food which is next to his bed then he go's back to the bed so i cant restrict him anymore than i have
 
Hi love you can safely use the bepanthen i have the baby version for nappy rash in my 'piggie first aid kit'.
Only thing is the supermarkets aren't open today either.......you could see if there's a chemist open, usually they share the opening times on Good Friday you'll find one open in morning and the other in the arvo.

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor Boris! It's horrible that he and you have to go through something like this, but it's lucky he has such a caring owner who won't just abandon him.

I'll be thinking of you and him. Good luck, and hope all goes well from here on in.
 
I've not heard of bed sores on piggies, but even if it was possible, *personally* I feel it's more likely to be something else. Given that when he walks his leg could easily be rubbing on the edge of the splint, it may be probable that it's this friction which has caused this sore.

The Bepanthen can be applied as often as needed. Clean the sore, pat it dry and apply Bepanthen at least 3 times a day. This should soothe and heal the current sore and hopefully protect the skin from further 'abrasions'. I do agree with you that getting the splint cut away from behind both his front legs would be useful to prevent this happening again.
 
thanx for the help i ran around eveywhere that i could find open today only to find no bepanthen the chemist was closed so i am continuing the salt water then will get the bepanthen tomorrow and make a vet visit will update then xxxxxxxx
 
Boris update

hi everyone just letting you all know about Boris.Recently i posted that boris was bleeding from his splint rubbing.I took him to the vet after bugging them for an appointment for 2 days and told them that i think he needed a bit of the bandages cut away.Well i went to go and pick him up not only didnt they do anything about the splint they said that we just have to deal with the rubbing and bleeding and they also didnt even care that he had red swollen feet,this is the 4th vet i have taken him to now and i am fuming.

I'm so sorry - that really looks like a straight version of "don't know what to do, and don't care"! I hope that you didn't have to pay for a non-existing service like that!

As most owners don't bother much about small animals, proper medical care for them is still so much unknown territory and not part of a vets training. But looking after open sores in any animal should really involve any special knowledge!

All the best for Boris! Can you contact a specialist to get advice on his swollen feet and how to care for his sores yourself?

Now i see what you wrote and what your mum said, yes i know what she's on about, but in piggies i'm not sure of that ...........dam it, so sorry you weren't able to find anyone open with Bepathen.......

I'm sorry all the vets are being so useless. Boris may well have a great chance of recovery if only the vets were competent and willing enough to treat the problem. All too many vets see guinea pigs as "giving up too easily". Every time a vet believes that, it is they that give up too easily. I really hope things pick up very soon for you with this.

Keep up with the Bepanthen when you get some, it should help a lot.
 
hi everyone have gotten bepanthen and i hope it helps but i dont see how it will because the second it starts to heal he will rub it all over again i can contact the specialist that Glynis so kindly gave me the number for but he is to far to see Boris reguarly so unfortunantly i have to keep dealing with these people that dont care much for our lil critters.Good point ccc4 about vets giving up before the guineas,Boris has had so many setbacks yet he is still happy,loving and bright,although without the proper care I'm worried he might not stay that way,truthfully what we are doing for boris here that i have learnt mostly from this forum is helping him so much more than any vet so big thanx to all of you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxcxcxx>>>
 
I am glad to hear that you have been able to get hold of some Bepanthen! Even if it cannot stop the sores, it can soothe the affected skin and help the sores from getting worse!

I use Bepanthen on my poor nose and upper lip whenever I have a really bad streaming cold, so it doesn't go painfully sore, and it heals off a lot quicker.
 
Really sorry to hear about the problems that you and Boris are having.
