How is Boris today? Have you been able to contact Vedra (which I think is probably the number of the specialist posted on here)?

Gve him a cuddle from me!

I'm sorry to hear that Boris is having problems with his splint and it's so annoying when you can't get the help you need, especially from professionals. I hope things get sorted for little Boris :)

I'm not sure on the cost of calls between UK and Aus, especially calls to a mobile. If a vet can be found who is willing to do some long-distance phone calls and try the treatment suggested, then putting a call in to Vedra is worth the vets consideration. A vet is the best person to contact Vedra in this case as they will understand the jargon for the seemingly complicated issues of poor Boris.

Bepanthen won't stop the sores unfortunately, but it should soothe and protect. Applying it frequently - 4-5 times a day - is probably the simplest and best way to help the problem.

I go away for a few days, tell Boris to vehave or Legolas will be sent over to sort him out & what happens? More porblems?! Do you need me to send the bossiest pig ever over?? :))pow-pow

Poor Boris. Why is it some piggies suffer endlessly, whilst others suffer nothing? It is good to hear that he is still happy though, because I do think that is the most important thing. It is also a huge for us owners, coping with the trials which crop up in our piggies lives. -c

How is his sore patch? My boys are sending new squeaks & hugs his way. Jerry has behaved himself my end & is alive & happy. They do listen to their mummies sometimes!

tsk Boris you listen to your mummy xx>>>
I think you're doing as much as you possibly can for him, i'm sure a little friend might perk him up, it would be nice for him to chat too somebody x) good luck on getting a rescue you're doing better than i did, i NEVER got a call back :(

re calls from OZ to UK they're not that bad, i do it often and i'm forever texting rolleyes8:):))
If you feel the need for more info which could be beneficial i'm sure.......and you find it difficult give me all the info and i'll call Vedra for you, more than happy too :)

I'm glad that the sores are getting sorted! How are Boris' legs?

He should be happy about a new friend! It's good to hear that you are able to adopt.

It is hard to be optimistic sometimes, especially with a long lengthy problem. Just hold onto your love for Boris & if ever in doubt, check out his handsome smile! There is othing quite like a guinea smile to pick you up! x)x)x)

I am sure Boris will appreciate a guinea friend. They always find something to talk about! I am sure my boys talk about me sometimes :x

The boys say 'hello' and 'behave'!

So glad that the vet finally cut the splint back! Good on you for bugging the vet to get it done. :)

hi guys so much to tell you all today!first of all Boris's legs are getting better everyday and he still remains a happy little piggy:)).on the other front i went everywhere looking for a c&c today couldnt find the materials at any shop so i came home with a nero4 which i will attach a large run to it ready for when Boris gets better.the bad thing i did today was (oh gosh I'm a bad piggy mummy for this)but i walked into the pets section and there was a little boy sitting in the corner of his cage with his head slumped with no friends,i nearly cried. But as you can all probably guess i walked out of the store with the sad little boar.now i have him here now and plan to introduce him to Boris as soon as i know he is healthy.I am still rescuing a piggy from rescue but i just couldnt say no to this boy he needed some love he is around 6 weeks old and tiny i just hope all of you can forgive me for this its against all my beliefs to get one from a petshop but i just couldnt leave without him......:)

I'm sure no one will mind you giving a forever, loving home to a sad looking lonely pig. Indeed, it's a shame regarding the origin but he could have gone to a much worse home.

You were weaker than normal given the situation with Boris, I think we can forgive you. :)

In any case it is much harder to find rescues in Australia than it is in some other countries, I know ACS over there does a great job transporting pigs across the country but it doesn't mean it's easy! What's done is done, and you're still adopting from a rescue, so it's really not all bad.

Really wonderful news that Boris' legs are healing. He is a truly inspiratational piggie. (And very handsome too!)

yayyyyyyyyyy sounds fab x)x)
Seriously tho......pm me and i'll give you my details and if you need be then i can phone UK for you! Please if that is the way i can help Boris i'd be pleased too, he's so dam cute ooooooops should say handsome cause he's a boy ;) and got attitude xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

hi everyone thanks for being so nice about it Boris thinks its great especially since smokey and bandit arent very nice to him anymore.thanx everyone I'm glad my piggys and i are part of such a wonderful groupxx>>>xx>>>

OK, it seems I need to check out baby photos first - although all of us here are sending hugs & squeaks (human & guinea) to you & Boris!

Back soon....

I'm back!

Firstly, the baby is adorable! x)x) As I said in the picture thread - I am seriously considering sending Legolas over to pig-nap him. I can see him with my babies. Although then Boris will be lonely & I will feel very bad :( OK, you can keep him!

Don't feel guilty for taking him home. I would have done the same too. I got my Aragon from a pet shop. He too was alone & older - about 5 months. No one wanted a bigger, older pig. I got him, took him home & had 3 wonderful years with him. I have no regrets as sometimes we know what is right & I think that what you did was right. And better someone who will love him & give him a great life, than someone who wouldn't care!

Plus, hopefully Boris will have his own best friend & that will help with his recovery! Maybe you could put their cages side-by-side so they can talk to each other? :(|):(|) that way they can get to know each other before being physically able to be together. @) I am so excited for Boris! Send more piccies though when you get them!

As for names I suggested 'Bertie'. It just popped into my head! I just want to munch him.....

Daily hugs & squeaks from the manly quintet - who are not talking to me because they need their (very late) breakfast & a cage change. I guess I need to go make my peace with them... :red

you are very welcome. Obviously you were meant to have your new baby so don't feel guilty - or let anyone else make you feel guilty! Just love him & protect him from English guinea pigs sent over to pig-nap him...... :)):)):))

As I have committed the "sin" of buying piggies from a shop myself, I'm not throwing stones! I actually managed to walk out, but after three sleepless nights my OH went and reserved the piggy for me. He said it was the only way to have some peace again!

I've had a look and, gosh!, I can completely understand you! I posted some names on the other thread.

I'm so happy that Boris' legs are getting better! Go on, boy!

Boris update

hi everyone thought i would update you on boris it has been fairly smooth travelling until now.....On tuesday Boris had his bandages changed for hygenic reasons, since then he has become irritable, destructive, biting my OH,and looking depressed and a little puffy i was woried but my OH and the vets said it was probably completly normal and i was going to come on here and ask but because of what they said i thought maybe i was overreacting well guess what i wasn't.today when i checked on Boris in a matter of an hour he blew up to about double his normal size with swelling and his breathing was shallow one minute and heavy the next so i rushed him to the vet only to have them make me wait in a consult room for one hour. When they finally saw Boris they couldn't stop apologising and couldn't believe how bad he looked all because when he got his bandage done on tuesday the bandage had slipped down his back pulling tight the bandage around his front legs te bandage was in fact to loose. So they re did the bandage and now he is ok,the swelling is going down and his behaviour has settled, i gave him some metacam and he seems better, even though it was there mistake with the bandage and they could have killed him with his breathing being like that they still told me i had to pay $140 for his bandaging thats $280 just on bandages since tuesday this is so unfair considering Boris has been stressed and injured more for no good reason now he also has blood spots and scabs around his neck from the bandage pulling I'm at a loss as to what i should do he is only 3 weeks into his recovery and still has 3 more weeks left and he is already miserable:...

What a nighmare for poor Boris and you!

I am appalled that they made you pay again for the rebandaging, as they clearly bodged the job and could have killed him! If you were not so dependent on them, I would make an official complaint and ask for some money back.

You might find that as Boris becomes better, he'll be more irritable and fed up with being immobilised. Perfectly understandable, but not easy on anybody involved! It's such a long haul... - but it will be worth it!

hi thanks for the support i really don't think there is anything i can do about it they are the biggest most experienced practice around and are joined with a few others around i dont have much choice:(poor Boris there attitude is basically that he isn't worth the same as a dog or cat, there is one vet there though that loves Boris and treats him like he is as important as a human being.the **** is that he has very little experience on piggys but has the perfect attitude he asks my opinion on things and listens to us instead of talking over the top of us and he also is quite happy to have regular contact with Glynis's vet Brendan who is fantastic with piggys.i know he doesnt know enough but if he stays in touch with the right people do you think he may be able to do better for boris?he is very keen to help Boris and learn about piggys

I'm sorry you had such a to-do with the vets again. Poor Boris, I don't blame the little guy for getting fed up! I agree that the stronger they get, the stroppier they tend to get. Obviously a sudden change in temperament, especially if it ties in with a recent treatment, is a concern as you unfortunately discovered. In general they get a bit more normal with each step to recovery, and although it makes it harder for the people caring for the piggie, it's usually a good sign.

I hope Boris stays strong and we see him in a few weeks times recovering to full health and happiness!

Re: the vets. If the vet is willing, encourage him to learn as much as possible! If he can get his knowledge and experience up to a high standard, not only does that help the piggies he sees and treats, but he'd be able to advise other vets in a situation like yours.

If you have found a vet who loves piggies and wants to do his best for them, who is willing to listen to owner's input and willing to learn from other vets then they are like golddust and try to support them as much as possible. I really mean that!

Also, I was really sorry to hear about the bandaging problem. Well done to you for persevering and looking after Boris so well. I haven't said that before, but this thread has been brilliant and don't stop looking after your Boris so well!

Sarah x

I stayed with my vet, because she really swotted up on my piggy's illness and didn't mind asking a specialist; by all means, go for a vet who cares and is willing to learn!

Update

hi just thought i would update and ask for help again with Boris.I don't know what to do Boris has come so far and only has 2 weeks left in his splint then another 2 weeks after that until he can be with friends again, but Boris has become very withdrawn, grumpy and depressed he just sits there in his cage with his head slumped:(he gets playtime everyday with Basil and i have given him all his favourite foods and lots of hay and cuddles but its not working like it was before, also his hair is falling out at an alarming rate he has white flakes all over his skin and all you do is touch it and around 10-15 hairs come out attached to a flake of white skin i don't know what it is can anyone help or give advice it seems with all of this going on that Boris may give up and not want to fight anymore and if that happens i can't help him anymore i need to keep his spirits up i have tried to put him for playtime with Smokey & Bandit but they reject him now:(

Poor Boris :( If he has flakes of skin and hair loss, could there be a chance he has mites or a fungal infection? Hopefully he won't have but its worth a check. He is probably just feeling down as he has been in his splint for so long now. Just keep giving him plenty of cuddles and love. Smokey and Bandit may just be a little wary of him and hopefully they will accept him again when the splint is off and they're together again. Sending vibes your way xx
