piggymummy

some of u may have read about my Harry in general chat,
i'm sorry to go on and on but i'm just so sad about the state the pet shop let him get into :'(

he has got a huge bald patch across his chest between his front legs and around his front legs that isnt sore at all, just bald :(
and after our lovely cuddle this morning i've found quite a few more scabs behind his ears, on the top of his head and the back of his neck.

His white hair has got lots of black bits in it that i can pick out that just look like dirt, and his brown hair has got what looks like dandruff.

I am treating him for mites and keeping everything really clean for him and trying a variety of different veggies, but he doesnt seem to want to eat them (even cucumber!) i know he has had a drink and my OH saw him eating some dry food but wish he'd eat some veg! although he probaby isnt used to that :'(

From the size of his cage in the pet shop i know he hasnt been able to hardly move around :tickedoff: so living with me is a bit strange for him so i know he needs to settle in.
fingers crossed everybody he'll be running around and eating lots of veggies very soon!

is there anything else u think i can do for him? is it worth gettin vitamin drops etc? i can get some today if anyone thinks they'd b worthwhile, i havent got much experience of poorly piggies.

thanks everyone! xx

awwwwwwwww poor Harry, have been reading lots about the poor love.

I guess he's not used to veg and may need something to boost his appetite? Metatone tonic works wonders :)

Awww god love him. But at least he is out of there now and you seem to be doing very well with him. Have you thought about giving him a gentle bath to get rid of the dandruff and black bits (dead mites?) I don't think Vitamin C drops are rated very highly. What about trying a piece of orange? It must be odd for him as the pet shop prob just shovelled some gerty in there everyday with no fresh veg or affection. Good luck. x

Aww poor harry, I have been following his story too. Could I ask what treatment he has had for the mites? Is he scratching a lot? I think skin fungal infection is often seen in conjunction with mites and a site called gorgeousguineas has a wonderful range of shampoos just for guineas. Just email Chrissie for advice about which one is best for Harry. Lots of patience with the veggies, sure he will have a nibble then there will be no going back! The metatone tonic as Kelly suggested is a good idea. It might be worth popping to the vets if you haven't done so already for check up.
Good luck and keep us informed O0

thanks for all your replies will get my OH to get some metatone tomorrow, and wil definately be taking a look at gorgeous guineas later on today.

i have used the "beaphar anti parasite spot on with ivermectin" on the advice of a friend who is a veterinary pharmacist. he hasnt scratched at all whiile i've had him (obviously maybe when i wasnt looking?)

this morning i bought a fine toothed comb and some mild tea tree cream to put on his sore bits and maybe try a bath later on in the week. will take a trip to the vet if no better in a couple of days. i'm so surprised he's letting me love him and comb him after being in that tiny cage for so long i love him to pieces!

also, treated myself to a new camera today so hopefully tonight will post u some pics of our beautiful harry (when i can figure out how lol)

thanks again and piggy kisses from harry x

Poor little fellow, I think you are doing all you can for him. A bath would do wonders for him, it will also help you two bond but I would wait a coupe of days until he is settled in. If he doesn't make some recovery in the next couple of days then I would pop him down the vets. Personally I don't think the metatone tonic is a good idea just yet. :)

people may shout at me for this...but my piggie gracey who has been really impressing me recently and perking up a lot wouldnt really eat anything...

Basically...if i get a kale or cabbage leaf...I basically bite on it...dont bite it off...just chew it a bit leaving teeth marks...she scoffs it down..I dont know if it gives it more of a smell as its been 'broken' but it works everytime!

He will take a while to ajust to everything..and a nice little bath will make him feel much better, but like cc says, try not to overwelm him with too much handling and new things at once!

I agree with CC about the metatone tonic, not just yet! :)

Hi, have you tried Parsley as well?
If he isnt really eating anything maybe try science recovery or critical care, this will help him keep his weight up.

I agree about getting some shampoo from gorgeous guineas, they really are wonderful. There are also really good creams and stuff on there as well.

Hope he gets better.

can i just as why metatone tonic isnt a good idea? dont really know much about that kind of thing and am interested!

i am glad to say that he is beginning to eat a few veggies and seems to have "perked up" as it were, am very proud of him he's looking better and better! x

Metatone tonic will boost his appetite, which I personally don't think he needs at this point. All he needs is a little time to settle in. Like you have said he has eaten some veggies, so there is nothing wrong with his appetite. :)

Awwww poor little Harry he has been thru a lot. I'm sure he's just getting used to you, he must've been petrified poor little fella. Now's he's in his forever home i'm sure he'll improve with a little time, lots of patience and lots and lots of TLC :smitten: :smitten: You're doing a great job with him congratulations to you O0

Its taken Ronald and Donald 2 weeks to have the confidence to go up and down the stairs in their hutch also to play with their tunnels etc and trying new foods was a challenge. I am sure Harry will learn to trust you and that will help him get better much more quickly. It wouldn't surprise me if he was a little depressed and you have cheered him up but he may think it wont last, I think Piggy's are very intelligent and have feelings I can tell with my boys and the way they have changed!

You are doing a fab job! O0

Thanks all! he seems to be cheering up all the time and when i got home today he had obviously been out playing as everything was upside down, half his willow ball has been eaten and his food bowl was half empty! ;D am so pleased for him.

Thanks for all the good advice i've received, me and harry really appreciate it!

just to let you all know harry is making a super recovery! he is a totally different piggy, getting braver and braver, has started to squeak a bit and he's eating in front of me which he wouldnt do before!

have ordered some thing on the advice of you and chrissie at gorgeous guineas, cant wait to try them!

thanks so much everyone who helped x

That's brilliant news. Pictures when he is all better? Keep us updated on his progress. O0
