If knowing your not top piggy isn't enough my poor Jack has a uti . Cleaning out their set up today noticed little bits of blood around. He has been squeaking a lot recently, put it down to him bieng submissive, but no it wasn't. Poor little man. Been given baytril for ten days. Any tips for my little man ,he does squeek when he pees . Glad to say the vet couldn't feel any stones or lumps, and he wasn't in any discomfort when he fell his tummy. So any help would be gratefully recived thanks guys x
 
Aww. Get well soon Jack. Are you giving a pro biotic an hour after the baytril? That will help as baytril is harsh on their little stomachs.
 
Please make sure that you give a pinch of probiotic about an hour after the antibiotic. If you haven;t got any at home already, you can get some at a pet shop. This will hopefully help to bolster the effect of the baytril, which can loosen the poos and/or dampen the appetite.

You can help to shorten the acute phase by giving him mildly diuretic veg like fresh grass, dandelion, cucumber or lettuce, but be careful as too much can cause diarrhea - and baytril has already a tendency to cause soft poos. Otherwise, syringe water several time a day (half a 1ml syringe in one go = 1 mouthful at a time), as much as he will drink to help flush out the bacteria out of the bladder and to ease the acute symptoms.

Give him some extra vitamin C to help bolster the immune system.

Weigh him once daily at the same time in the feeding cycle.

Contact your vet in case Jack stops eating or if the symptoms don;t disappear within the week. How long is your course for?

He said ten days , could I give him a bit of calpol for his discomfort when he wees ? I will get some pro biotic tomorrow . What's best for the vitamin c boost please x

Thankyou I'm sure he will be ok . Murrays bieng a bit dominant since we got back to the vets. He's such a silly piggy he won't let me give him a cuddle, but has a go at Jack when he has one xx piggies eh ! Xx
 
Please give the vets a ringtomorrow to ask for some pain relief (metacam) as this will help with pain and inflammation in the bladder too. Lots of healing vibes to Jack, I hope he feels better soon x

Thankyou makes you wonder why they don't give it to you in the first place. May give him a little infant paracetamol tonight if he doesn't settle 0.2 mls I think is right . But only if he needs it xx
 
Had to take Jack back to the vets today, poor little man kept crying when he was weeing , anyway the vet had given him some metacam. When he felt his bladder he said it was more tender and harder than previously . I had to sign a form to say I understood it was licensed for cats and dogs, not a problem.
I'm really worried about my little fella, can anyone help out if you've had dealings with utis . How long should it last , I'm doing everything I can for him I'm just scared it's not enough. My vet said if it doesn't clear next step is a urine sample! How do I manage that one? Any help guys would be helpful x

I am going to answer on here as it keeps everything together. Glad you have pain relief, would your vet consider Septrin at all? it is known to be more effective with a UTI than Baytril.

If that doesn't help then the next step should ideally be an xray or scan to check for stones, after a urine test of course. To get a urine sample, you need to place them in a clean container after having a drink and then collect the urine in a sterile syringe. The vet can then test it or you can buy the sticks to test it yourself. Some vets are able to express urine too.

Cystease or veggie Glucosamine can also help if the bladder is inflamed.

Thankyou he's in a lot of discomfort at the moment squeeking constantly don't know what to do. I phoned an emergency vet and they want 120 pounds just to look at him. I'm registered with the rspca because of previous animals they won't treat him only to put him to sleep, it's causing me great distress don't know what to do for the little one. I cannot afford 120 pounds they want that up front x poor little fella
 
please try and get him back in the vets as soon as you can, it must be so uncomfortable for him. Has he got metacam? would the vets arrange a pay plan of any kind for you?

What dose of Metacam is he on and is it the dog or cat one?

Part of me thinks this may be more than an infection if he is in that much pain, is he peeing blood?

Yep he is passing blood has been since Monday I think. He told me to give him metacam it is the dog and cat one as for a 6 kg animal on the doser. Which I did this morning. The poor mite is hunching up in pain and I can't do anything to help him x

can you try a different vets? I have had my boy with blood twice and both times had septrin and metacam and it stopped, although it happened a third time at which point we went down the xray route and found a stone x
 
Oh I'm so sorry. Have you been told to take him to Vets Now the out of hours place? Its very expensive there I know. Poor Jack. Big Hugs for you both x
 
Can you ask the vet over the phone about giving another dose? ideally pain relief should be given more than once a day as they have such a fast metabolism. I am not good with the Metacam syringe and also there are 2 types - cat and dog and the dosing is different. It really does sound like he needs more pain relief.
 
Update on Jack. I rushed him to Ashliegh vets that specialise in exotics I know they are good I used to go with my bearded dragon, anyway I though sod the expense the little man was in such discomfort. Took him down the vet gave him a really good going over, she thinks it's more than a uti they are looking after him tonight make him comfortable and up his anti biotic they use a different one not baytril. He doesn't have a temperature.
Tomorrow the exotic specialist vet will work out a plan of action. Deffo urine sample , and x Rays under a ga
He was so good as gold the little guy, did grumble and chatter at me but hey he's poorly I don't mind.
Jacks in good hands now just wished I'd gone there before, didn't have transport to get there so I settles for a nearer vet, bad move , not saying they are bad vets, but they don't know about piggies, I will never compromise again. Bill so far £158.14. That's with out the X-rays and anything else. I can pay by instalments so that's good. I paid in total at the other vets £ 60 . Can't put a price on any animals health. I will live on beans on toast if I have too. Come on my little fells you can fight this. I worry about stones. Was everything ok for your boy, I'm so scared he want pull through, he's a gorgous piggie xx

Pdsa looked after my rainbow piggie Andy they were brilliant but they have very limited resources bieng a charity. I did give a good donation though. Decided to just pay what's needed he's my little fella x
 
Oh poor Jack and poor you. I just hope you both feel much better tomorrow x
