Poorly Daisy Again, At Wits End

Did the xray show anything at all? If you look at my Maddie's xray it shows the heart is enlarged on the right side, don't know if that helps as a comparisson. Her dose of Benazapril is 1.5mg a day. She only has diuretic when needed and is also on Co-Enzyme Q10 and I shall shortly be starting her on a supplement called Quercetin once I am sure she is over her recent issues.

The vet said her heart was not enlarged but a good view was not possible due to this shadowing which she thought may be fluid. From my calculations I think daisy is only on 0.5 mg of the fortekor which I tried to discuss over phone with vet, she agreed the dose was wrong so did another bottle free of charge but this seems to be a lower dose as only has 1 x 5mg tab in a solution whereas the previous bottle was 2 x 5mg tabs in what looks like the same amount of liquid, she is only having 0.5 ml per day. She improved dramatically when started on all the meds together.

That to me says she initially responded to the heart meds but that was an introductory dose and the maintenance dose needs to be higher. I remember about the xray now. I think a further xray is needed really, though do you have a stethoscope?

No stethoscope, although I do work I do work in a medical centre.

Any chance you could borrow one? If when you listen she sounds like she is under water then there is fluid still. Though best to get her checked by the vet too.

Ok, just checked ebay and can pick one up cheaply, might be worth getting one in. Her breathing appears to have settled now, I will ring vet tomorrow. I must try to get some sleep now, thanks for the advice, will up date tomorrow.

Good idea, we have one for the same reason, though I am useless at hearing anything through it, damn my ears. You're welcome, night.

Oh i have nothing at all useful to add to this but I just wanted to send my best wishes. I know what its like having a poorly animal and feeling at your wits end :( x

Daisy continues to be a mystery. Gave her a dose of frusol last night and the clicking noise stopped. Got up this morning and she is breathing a little fast but eating away.

That makes me think the Frusol worked then, when they need it I dose AM and PM but know you have run out now.

Just been following this post and reading through all of the comments - This really is a mystery and I am hoping you can get to the bottom of it. Sending love to you and Daisy:luv:

Why do vet reception staff make you feel like you re being a pest. I rang first thing and left a message that I needed to speak with the vet and was told that it would be afternoon before she was free, which is fine, I know they are busy. Just rang again but she has now started afternoon surgery so all they can say is tha she has been left the message. I just dont want to leave it too late as I may need to collect some meds.

The vet has just rang back and I explained what has gone on with Daisy since last night. I asked her what dose of fortekor Daisy is on and it is only 0.25mg per day and when I tried asking for this to be increased as it seems quite low as a starting dose she was not very happy; when I asked about splitting the dose because of piggies high metabolic rate she rubbished this and said she had never heard of this. Basically she wants to re x ray and run bloods but she has agreed to give frusol and fortekor for 4 weeks to see how Daisy does. She does not think she has a heart problem as the x ray did not show enlarged heart. This vet is recommended and I am very disheartened and do not know what to do. I am only trying to do the best for daisy but feel I have antagonised the vet now. Hubby is going to collect the meds now, I cannot face going there.

The vet just rang again, to clarify the actual dose of fortecor for Daisy is 0.5mg per day in one dose.

Oh gosh, what a pickle you're in! I can imagine your worry. Is your vet piggie savvy? I found that I wasted my money going to a regular vet as they missed out an ovarian cyst in one of my girls :(

I hope Daisy gets better xx

Update on Daisy. I have been giving her 0.5mg of the fortekor am and 0.5 mg pm, yesterday and today to see if it makes a difference and she now seems to be a lot better! Don't know whay the vet will say about me giving her double what she said but it is still a low dose so I will deal with that when I need to ask for more.

Sending healing vibes to Daisy, but she sounds so lucky to have you battling for her x

Daisy has turned into an eating machine, she has regained 70g in 2 days! Still giving her the two doses of fortekor per day and two doses of furosemide. Thank you to everyone for thier advise and good wisshes.

I am thinking of changing vets, to a more local one; hopefully I can find one who is open minded enough to read the information sheet I have, on heart pigs. What does anybody think? Would my current vet be obliged to send Daisys information on.x

2014-02-25 21.50.33.webp Daisy is the liveliest I have seen her for a long time. She has actually done a zoom around the living room and pop corning with Jasper. I am feeling a lot more relaxed now.

That's wonderful. How long do you have before you need more meds?

I should have enough for another 8 or 9 days I think. I think I will call the vet early next week and tell her the dose I have been giving. Will tell her how well Daisy is and ask will she prescribe or do I need to find another vet. I may call into my local vet and test the water there. I don't feel any connection to the current vets. My local vet was always keen to give the piggies a cuddle but this one is very impersonal.

Sounds like a good plan, I really do hope that once she realises how well she is doing she will agree but if not definitely try your local vet.

So pleased the higher doses are helping her.
