Hi everyone...

my poor little harry has an RTI. I noticed he was breathing really deeply last night whilst cleaning the hutch out so i brought him indoors to have a look at him...was up all night with him as he was off his food and water and his breathing wasnt right. i managed to syringe feed him some water. (quite tiring being up all night as I'm 31 weeks pregnant too lol)

anyways as i had to be in work at 6am this morning i had to get my mum to take him down the vets this morning and he's had an injection and ive got some antibiotics to give him for the next 6 days.

he's perked up a bit now and is eating some grass....ive put him back in the run with his cage mate munch as i thought he would be happpier getting a bit of fresh air (theyre now snuggled up together) but ill be bringing him indoors with me at night.

my only worry is that munch could catch it from him...is this possible? ive checked munch over and he seems fine is eating and drinking etc...

Respiratory tract infections can spread, so keep a close eye on Munch. They can also progress quite quickly and can kill; good on your mum that she took Harry to be seen the next day!

Please weigh your patient daily to make sure that he is eating enough! Weighing weekly is one of the best ways of noticing problems early on.

You can help with giving him extra vitamin C, either in form of unsweetened cranberry juice or by dissolving 1/8 of a human tablet in a little bit of water. Please do not add anything to their bottle - you can't control the intake and it will only help making the water go green in record time!

Here is more information about what you are dealing with:

yes this came on quickly as there was no sign of it the day before...he was eating and drinking fine then...ive never had a piggy with an rti before although previous ones have had other problems..so luckily i know they deteriorate quickly......good job my mum is an angel and didnt even bat an eyelid when i turned up on her doorstep with him at 5.30 am this morning lol

Would it be a better idea for me to separate him from munch during the day aswell? as the vet said the fresh air would do him good as long as he was brought in at night.. or would i do just as well to keep an eye on munch and get him treated if he appears to be showing symptoms?

Just a quick update on harry for anyone thats intersted, he appears to be starting to recover he is eating and drinking and playing out. his breathing is still quite fast and he has been tucked up with me in the house at night time but put back out with his friend in the daytime.....

he absolutely hates his medicine and doesnt half wiggle and squirm to get the syringe away from him which is quite amusing. i would rather him like that than all quiet as it shows he's doing alright :)) so fingers crossed he'll recover nicely! :)
