Going to try and upload a pic of treacles nose, we've had her a couple of weeks, yesterday I noticed her nose was a little bit white, like a teeny spot, today its spread its happened really quickly. Hubby at work and has the car but going to try and get to the vets this afternoon once hes finished, but any advice as what it looks like would be nice, shes in quarintine and has been since we get her and foxy (got them at the same time so they've been together the whole time).

Thanks Chantelle

Aw no hope they find out what it is :( seems like its very fast acting! I'm sure you have been but definitely wash your hands after handling them so as not to pass on to your other guineas.

That looks to be ringworm, but you will need vet diagnosis to confirm.

As it can be transferred to other animals and humans please but vigilant about hand washing and dealing with any bedding/housing that cannot be thrown away as the spores can lay dormant for a very long time and so infect your pets again.

Once you have confirmation of exactly what is is we can give more targeted advice in how to deal with it and the products to use the make the caging etc safe again.

Thanks we've been looking and thought ringworm also. What should we do with the other piggy thats in with her? Also is it likely shes come to us with this as I read incubation is a couple of weeks? Will def get her to the vets, should we take any creams/shampoos they recommend or come back here and get advice then buy what is recommend from you lot?

Aw, sorry this has happened :(
The vet will diagnose and give you the necessary treatment - mention you have a second piggy too so you'll have enough. Don't be afraid to ask any questions if you are unsure of anything.
I've never personally dealt with Ringworm but it is highly contagious to animals and humans so please take care.
Keep us updated and hope all goes well at the vets, sending healing vibes to your girls x>>
Just a quick note, I would inform whoever you had Treacle from just to make them aware.

Please take your vets advice on treatment, though if they use a Woods lamp (black light) and say that there is no fungal infection because there is no florescence please advise them that not all type of ringworm in piggies reacts to black light. Take both the pigs for the appointment as they will both likely need to be treated.

Thank Suzy, shes booked in at 5.30pm tonight, I've told them I suspect ringworm and that there is another piggy in with her and they've said its almost certain the other will get it too at some point. I'm gutted, cant believe how quickly its come up. With how easily it spreads is there a chance me or the kids could have caught it before you could see there was anything wrong? Panicing now a bit.

Chantelle

Just had another look at her and it seems she has a small patch on her leg starting and another on her back. Noones touched her nose but shes been stroked on her back obviously and handle loads by the kids over the last few days.

Chantelle

Hope someone sees this (suzy), my hubby has just had a headon crash in our car, everone involved is ok thankgod, but I dont know if I can get treacle to the vets, we live in a small village with no public transport! My mum has gone to get my hubby and I'm hoping she can take me and the girls in still but if I cant get them to the vets today what should I do as I'm very worried about treacle and how quick this has come up and how much worse it could get if shes left another day!

Chantelle

Don't panic - if you need advice please phone me at the rescue on 01639 721127.

Take care of the family first.

Thanks, easier said than done, I'm close to tears.... treacle so happy, popcorning and purring, so I guess it could be worse right? I'll wait for mum to get back and call you if I
cant get to vets thank you.
Chantelle

Thanks for the links. Will have a read later, when got more time, just flitting on and off while I wait for hubby to get back.
Is ringworm itchy as she scratching alot?

I believe it is yes, the skin becomes kind of scaly :(
Hope hubby is ok :)

Hubby has a bit of neckache but seems ok apart from that.
Mum taking him in to vets with the guineas as I type this. might have over worried a bit earlier, had another look when I moved her to the carrier and I'm not sure if there is any on her back, her fur looks parted but no loose or flakey skin like on her nose but she is very scratchy so maybe there is something starting? We will know soon enough. Just feel relieved that Paul is ok, and the guineas are still able to see the vet today.

Chantelle

Paul just rang, said vet says it ringworm and has prescribe canestan for it. Said if not better in 5 days to bring her back and she will need a course of injections. The vet runs the guinea pig rescue and I'm guessing they mean the one based in Kingsbridge. Heres hoping the cream works and shes better soon. She also said we have 2 very well behaved guineas, but they have had alot of handling over the last 2 weeks with 5 kids and both me and hubby handling them. Going to miss that now til the ringworm has clearer up. There is only 1 patch on her nose the bits I thought where starting else where are just how her hair grows, like a roset (sp) she thinks.

Suzy could you give me the info on cleaning cage bedding etc please. We currently use f10 with all our animals is this ok? If so what strength should we make it up as for cleaning them out?

Chantelle

Gosh you poor thing. I am glad your husband is okay. Poor piggy. I hope she gets better soon too.

So pleased things have been sorted - your vet sounds very good.
The F10 is 2ml to 1 litre of water - I use a 500ml spray bottle so pop 1ml in :)

Thanks we use a spray bottle too, I'll check with hubby that that is the strength that has been made up. He follows what it says on the bottle so it should be.

Chantelle

F10 is exactly what I would recommend you to use - the strength is given on the packaging/label. You can also get a hand gel by F10.

While they are under treatment use a cardboard box as a bedroom so you can just throw it away as the treatment progresses.

Suzy x

Thanks, do we need to be doing a full clean everyday? Will order some F10 hand gel. How long after the sore has cleared can we start holding them again also given that the incubation is 7-14 days do we need to wait longer than this to hold Foxy to make sure shes got the all clear and hopefully not going to get it?

Chantelle

Cant stop itching, with Treacle having ringworm and now I've found headlice on my eldest son.....scratchy scratchy. Must try to think about something else.

Your family do know Friday the 13th isn't until tomorrow, don't they?? rolleyes

You've had a hell of a day today, maybe tomorrow you should all just stay in bed!

I can sympathize about the scratchy, scratchy, though, my 3 year old is just starting to show all the signs of chicken pox :x

Hope things start going better for you soon xx>>> xx>>>

Just caught up on this thread - hope you and hubbie are ok. Sounds like you are on top of the piggie problem so good luck with that.

Sending healing vibes to all!

Oh chicken pox, yep been exposed to that this week as well. No hope of staying in bed though 5 kids wont allow it lol. Do have my niece coming to babysit so we can go out tomorrow evening, a rarety. At least tomorrow cant be any worse... unless the other piggy show signs of ringworm, or treacles spreads, or all 5 kids have headlice, maybe the house will fall down?:(|)

Applying cream as directed by the vet, today it looks more open and sore than the white and dry that the pics shows, and its been bleeding. She does keep trying to wipe the cream of her nose (hates having it put on chatters her teeth lots), is it likely shes rubbed it and thats why its looking open sore and bleeding today, or is it normal to go through different stages? The patch is no bigger today.

Chantelle

Just a little update to say the patch on Treacles nose now has some hair regrowth and seems to be getting smaller. Still HATES having the cream put on but defintely on the mend. She going to hate being picked after we stop the cream as I think she'll excpet it every time to start with, as soon as she sees a hand now she wheeks really bad and runs away.

Chantelle

It is great to hear she is getting better. I hope she totally recovers soon.
