Hi All,

Maddy was spayed on Friday after loosing weight slowly over the last couple of weeks and no responding to any treatment. The vet found she had 2 very toxic cysts.

When she came home after the op she was quite alert and did attempt to eat some food herself. Since then she has not touched anything herself. I have been syringe feeding critical care but last night she stopped been interested in that. This morning I was able to get her to take apple and cucumber syringe feed. Now she is refusing that - she is just letting it drip out of her mouth.

She is on metacam. She also has a heat pad that she is spending a lot of time sat next too. Other than that she is really flat and not moving.

Any advice please?

Hi sorry to read that your girl is poorly. I've not had much experience with buns but if she was mine she would be straight to the vets, if that's not possible then at least a phone call to them for advice. x

I think you need to phone your vet for advice. Some more pain relief (mine was on vetergesic post-spay), some sub cut fluids, and gastro prokinetics would also help. Is she pooing?

Maddy is a guinea pig. She is pooping quite a lot which I was hoping was a good sign.

No worries. If she was a bunny I would not be so worried. They seem a lot better equipped to handle been spayed.

I have put some hay into Maddys cage and she perked up a bit. She has been hiding for the last week or so, so perhaps her current behaviour (apart from the not eating) is how she has been. She lives with 6 other piggies and I guess she will be missing them.

I will give her another hour and see how she reacts to another feed. I will then think about the out of hours vet. Ideally I would like to get her into our usual vets out of hours but they don't operate until 9am tomorrow.

Bare in mind tomorrow is Easter Monday, so your usual vets may not be open.

Are you weighing her daily? I would syringe feed even if she's not interested in it, you need to keep her gut moving. I agree seeing a guinea specialist vet is a good idea. Best wishes to Maddy.

My usual vet does out of hour from 9 am until 5pm so there will be someone at the practise. Outside of this it is another practise that cover a huge area.

I am trying her with a syringe every 2 hours. I weighed her this morning and she was 0.91kg, yesterday she was 0.92 kg. Before the op she was 0.96kg - but I guess a lot of the weigh loss from then will be the removal of the ovaries.

I went to feed Maddy just after my last post and she was not good. We rang the emergency vet and arranged to take her straight there. Sadly she passed away during the car ride.

RIP Maddy. x

I am so sorry.....

My piggy was spayed in Jan and I was wanting to help. It is a big op for such small animals.

It is so sad, but you did all you could. RIP. Lots of hugs. x

So sorry about Maddy :( hope you are ok x
