Hello there.
My poor Samoa was put through torture when she was given an antibiotic for her UTI in which she has a life threatening reaction to. She was hospitalized and I have been giving her critical care everyday. In the past week her weight dropped under 1000g. This past Wednesday/Thursday she was around 1040 and now as of Monday she is 985g. Her infection was never resolved, and she is only given a small amount of greens now that her poops and behavior are returning to normal. Is the weight loss super concerning?
The vet said we have to weight to fight that infection again because we couldn’t put her back on antibiotics if she was already so sick.
should I also give her normal amount of veggies if she’s eating in her own?

A daily fluctuation of 30g is acceptable (difference between an empty/full bladder/tummy).
I would weigh her daily until you are sure she is eating enough hay for herself (supplemented by the critical care) to stop losing weight.
Veg only makes up such a small amount of their daily food intake, so it won’t have an effect on her weight positively

Hi

I am very sorry about your ongoing problems!

Here is our GI Stasis information: Digestive Disorders: Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

However, if the weight loss is continuing/accelerating, I strongly suspect something else to go on. Has your vet checked for bladder, urethral or kidney stones or bladder sludge? Or is the lower gut thickened (IBS), which is the reason why my Pili Pala kept having wide weight swings in the wake of her own full-on GI stasis.
Please take a deep breath; the overall weight is still nowhere near dangerous levels, but I would contact your vet again tomorrow.

How much are you feeding in a day? You may want to step up feeding support. Have you been given pain killers and gut mobility drugs?

I am feeding her 46-50ml a day. Plus a limited amount of veggies now. And unlimited hay and 1/8 cup pellets.
She had an X-ray and it showed nothing however the culture on her urinewas full of bacteria. So it was a more developed infection. She was on metacam for three days for pain after being hospitalized but after that there are no pain meds Given.

Moving forward for Samoa I’m not sure when I should follow up with the vet to start antibiotics for the UTI... I don’t want to wait too long, but she was just hospitalized 5/14 and she had her follow up 5/21 and is finally showing normal sized poops and eating well (still on critical care). Should I wait another week or just call the vet and go ahead with a different antibiotic.

I would recommend to discuss another antibiotic after a piggy had a bad reaction to one.
If Samoa is not your only guinea pig, please support with poo soup the whole way through. If properly made, it is much more effective than normal probiotics as you basically transfer healthy live gut microbiome. In addition fibreplex can also help. Make sure that your vet is splitting the dosage so she is getting half every 12 hours; this also helps with the impact on the gut.
You can find the recipe for making it correctly in here: Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

@Wiebke do you think it’s too soon to try again? She’s really only had a week with more regular poops. It’s a close call because of this is an infection we are talking about it can spread to the kidneys.
