As much as I don't want to give up hope for the little guy, Casran shows no sign of improvement.

If anything he's getting worse and worse.

If he is still with us in the morning I will think it's a miracle.

The little chap born was in a rescue centre and briefly found happiness with a family before finding himself back in rescue.

I pray that he knows how much I love him, and that - at the very least - I gave him and safe, if albeit short, forever home.

Fingers crossed!

I am very sorry; it is always a horrible sinking feeling in the pit of your guts when you come to that realisation.

All you can do is try your best; but sometimes it is just not possible to save a piggy. Please don't feel like you are failing Casran.

Keep him warm (but not hot) and as comfy as you can and have him pts if he is in discomfort/pain as the last gift of kindness you can give him.

HUGS

Oh no Dawn :-( has his demeaner and appetite changed now too? I feel so sad reading this. We are all here for you xx

No, he's still eating loads.

He's become more lethargic.

I just don't know how much longer he can put this much effort into breathing.

I'd post a video of him but I don't want to distress all of his friends on here.

Jemima is beginning to realise something is wrong!

Its a good sign he is still eating. Is seeing a vet tonight possible? Biosolvin can break up the mucous and make him breathe much easier.. This will also help the antibiotics work. They may want to check his chest for fluid- in that case a diuretic would provide quick relief. Ultimately its your decision, just thought id mention it. Xx

You may actually be able to call the Out of hours line and ask them to dispense you biosolvin- he was seen by a vet yesterday and was diagnosed with a URI so it is relevant to the treatment and will be less stress for him.

Stay strong Casran x

I'm very sorry Casran is deteriorating.just make him comfortable and painfree. He will know you love him dearly.Guinea pigs can sense alot.Hugs to you.xx

He's led on the sofa watching his favourite TV show (NCIS) with his family around him. Everyone loves him x

You're a great Guinea Pig Owner and I can see how much this is hurting you.

Please be strong .

All we can do is give them our love , medical care and quality of life. The rest is up to Mother Nature .

We are all with you .

Big hugs to you, I can just tell how much you all love him. He sounds like a tough lad. You are a wonderful guinea slave.

I agree with some of the others, bisolvon and frusemide will help, especially if he has fluid on his lungs. My girl Cagney had pneumonia and I very nearly lost her. This combination helped her.

Sending you every bit of healing power I have x

if his breathing is the problem, have you thought of nebulising? don't know if it's already been mentioned or you've tried it, but i couldn't recommend it highly enough for respiratory issues x

Aw so sorry to hear Casran is ill :( I really hope he pulls through. We're going through the same sort of thing, only ours has something else wrong.

Sending you both lots of hugs.

Glad he's still with you, I really hope he can be prescribed more meds today, and that this can be brought quickly under control.
It's heartbreaking for you x

Just back from nursery run thought id check on how he is. Hope he can get seen today as i think biosolvin would really help him, and diuretics if there is any fluid- seems scary but my fudgey has been on 2 diuretics at the highest dose for 7 months and she is 7 next week.. And her kidneys are still functioning fully- it wont do him any harm in the short term, can only do good if he needs them xx

Trying to get things sorted x

My vet got very annoyed the last time I made a 'suggestion' and wouldn't give me what I asked for even tho it was only a probiotic, I remember now what they are. Jemima was on Baytril and the vet was adamant a probiotic wasn't need and was really shi*ty with me for suggesting I might know better!

It's just hit and miss at my vetinary surgery if you get a particularly piggy savvy vet ... even tho they are an exotics specialist.

I have mixed feelings about exotics vets . I took my sow to an exotics vet . I paid a fortune for her treatment . I have now found a general vet who has a specialist interest in guinea pigs. I think the exotics vet I went to was more interested in treating snakes and lizards than my Bess . I'm not saying I had bad care from the exotics vet - but I am saying I get better care from this general vet !

I'm thinking of changing. But there aren't many vets where I live.

They are also only open when I'm at work then charge a £100 out of hours fee every time I go on top of treatment and consultation.

He's had his full dose of antibiotic this morning tho ... I'm not messing around now!

Are there any vets that you know are better than others in the practice? If so, ask for the appointment to be woth them when u call. U are paying a consult fee- if a certain vet is available for consult, u have the right to choose to see them as long as u are willing to go with their schedule. Failing that, if u arent happy with the treatment or get shot down from a vet that wont listen to your suggestions then simply say u would like to see another vet and will wait in reception- i have done it before when my usual vet was on annual leave, and then a large animal vet (farm) opened the consult door and called on crunchie and i.. I simply said, "no disrespect but i need someone with good piggy knowledge and il happily wait for someone else!" And i did.

If the vet cant hear fluid on the lungs then they wont give you diuretics. But biosolvin at the very least should be considered to break up that congestion.

Good luck x

Just read your thread. My heart goes out to you. Big cyber hugs for you and ickle ones for Casran xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Being such a lovely piggie mum you will know when it's just too much for Casran. If he's willing to fight and it sure sounds like he is then go for it!

He is one tough boy!

With regards to vets, when my little Cagney was very sick with pneumonia I did not have the time to rush her to my vets, they are a 45 minute ride away and she was too sick to travel (literally gasping for breath). my local vets openly admit they are not interested in guineas but I begged them to help. They said she should be PTS but as I demonstrated my experience and told them what she needed, they injected her with a heavy dose of Frusemide and said that if she was still alive next morning they would do the same.

Imagine their shock when I was there at 8am the next morning with a much perkier piggie and she survived, thanks to them. I think it made them realise that just because they are tiny they still deserve trying for. She then went to my usual vet who could not believe the attitude of my local vets!

Cagney recovered after a few weeks and lived another 18 months before her heart sadly gave up. (she is the piggy in my avatar). She was tough like your Casran and had such a will to live it was amazing.

Just keep on at your vets and if they don't like the suggestions you make then go to another one.

More healing vibes being sent! xx
