Preparing To Say Goodbye

I have mixed feelings about exotics vets . I took my sow to an exotics vet . I paid a fortune for her treatment . I have now found a general vet who has a specialist interest in guinea pigs. I think the exotics vet I went to was more interested in treating snakes and lizards than my Bess . I'm not saying I had bad care from the exotics vet - but I am saying I get better care from this general vet !
Unfortunately guinea pigs are too exotic for most general vets and not exotic enough for most exotic vets. My vet, Simon Maddock, is a general vet, but has far more knowledge and experience than most other vets.

Well worth ringing around all the vets in the area, to see if they have anyone with a interest in guineas.

Sending continued vibes and love to you x

Agree with above, sometimes you find someone who may not be experienced with guineas but is very interested and will do all the necessary research etc. I had a wonderful lady like that who claims she learnt loads from working with me and the network I have established. She was wonderful and had no qualms in contacting her network (both UK and globally) and taking advice. Sometimes these sorts of vets are like gold dust. Sadly she moved 200 miles away, I was gutted :-(

But worth asking if they have an interest and would be interested in working with you? It also then ultimately adds another piggy vet to the list!

I can't offer advice, but just wanted to add my hugs and healing vibes for you and Casran. I do hope you can get to see someone who can give him the treatment he needs.

Keep fighting Casran.

Sending hugs to you and healing vibes to Casran. Hope someone can help him

Sending lots of good wishes your way. It's so hard emotionally to see them going downhill. And I know it can be hard dealing with vets sometimes. I've been lucky enough to find one who doesn't seem to mind that I come in with a stack of research and a lot of suggestions- I think it helps that a couple of times, I've been right about a problem that he couldn't initially see (I once insisted that Sundae have her teeth examined under anesthesia when an awake exam didn't show a problem because I had seen her pulling at her lips in a way that I associate with dental issues- turns out she had a molar spur that couldn't be seen until she was completely under and her mouth cleaned of all food debris. The vet called me personally to tell me I was right, and since then we have a really great history of working as a team!) It sucks that some vets see owner suggestions as an obstacle rather than as an asset. Since my vet figured out that I am observant and don't mind getting my hands dirty, he's actually taught me lots of stuff, from how to mix antibiotics by weight to how to clean abscesses really thoroughly and has even given me some free meds/tools over the years to help me out. I do see an exotics vet (they do dogs and cats as well), but they have plenty of rabbits and rodents as patients as well. I'm also somewhat picky about who I see- there are three vets in the practice but one has more guinea pig experience and he was the only guy I would let handle Sundae's teeth when she was having dental abscess (luckily the other vets are fine with that, as he does most of the rabbit/piggie teeth in the practice so they tend to schedule dentals with him anyhow.)

:( Just read this thread. Very sorry to hear that the beautiful Casran is under the weather. Sending lots of healing vibes and wheeks, and praying for his speedy recovery. :tu::tu:

sending more vibes.

when you make an appointment you can ask to see a certain vet. we always do anyway, unless of course you need an appointment asap. we are very lucky that our exotics vet practice are also highly piggy-savvy. i'm very very thankful for that.

x

sending bucketfulls of healing vibes for the gorgeous Casran.

if you're paying that much for a consultation I would definitely put my foot down-
ask what the outcome will be with their treatment/s & if you're not happy...
tell them what you want to happen &ask the reasons why they wont supply any medications or treatment you have suggested (Bisolven or frusimide).
my Ellie was a heart piggy & had Frusimide hen she was hooting badly & sounded very rattley, it didn't take long to clear her chest to near normal breathing.

you are paying for a service, they are supposed to be keeping the customer satisfied & keeping their patients alive with a good quality of life.
if the vet gets shi**y with you insist on another vet/second opinion.

Good luck & fingers& paws all firmly crossed here for a speedy recovery.
love the girls & I. xx

Sending you big hugs - where are you ? it just says Uk on your location - someone might bounce in with a good vet in your area / not too far away if we know which end of the country you are in.

Currently at work. More news later.

@TAN I'm in Lincoln. Have checked the vet locator here and the nearest recommended is a long way - I don't have a car.

But any suggestions for vets welcome x

Sending all out healing vibes and love to you, praying for a positive outcome! Stay strong xx

I keep checking this thread! We are all rooting for Casran. Hope you are doing well gorgeous boy xx

healing vibes still being sent for the formidable Casran (don't tell the others but he's one of my favorite forum piggies:love:)
fingers & paws all firmly crossed. xx
