Just looking for some support as I'm very worried about my Prim :(

Late last night I noticed her poo was a bit loose and she wasn't herself, wasn't moving much or interacting with the others. I stayed up with her until I saw her have a drink then move into the hay (about 1am) although I don't know whether or not she ate. I noticed her squeaking and appearing to strain.

This morning I got up early to check on her and she was lying still in the hay, not very responsive and a bit cold. I separated her from the others and rang the vet as soon as it opened. I have them registered with Manor Vets in Edgbaston but they had nothing until tomorrow, but they got me into another of their branches at 9.20am.

Prim got worse on the way, I could smell a bad poo smell from the carrier and when I arrived she started having bad diarrhea. Which I guess was good timing as it started when I was on the way to the vets!

They have admitted her for tests and fluids etc but I'm so worried about my baby. Started crying almost straight away when I was in there, felt a bit stupid, but she was pretty bad.

She's only 3 and I can tell the other 2 are missing her. I'm waiting on a phone call now but please send her your best wishes. I hope I've done everything possible :(

Hi! I am very sorry.

All the best, but at least she is in safe hands! It is always an anxious time. Good that you have had her seen as soon as possible.

It is very easy for a guinea pig to become dehydrated, so being in a place where she is subcutaneous fluids is good.

Vets rang about an hour ago. Apparently she's still pretty ill so the vet is still worried and probably going to keep her in overnight unless she picks up massively. But apparently in the last 15 mins before they called she'd been lifting her head up and trying to get away from the vet which they said is a good sign!

The other two are not themselves, not that they seem ill, but I can tell they are missing her.

Bless her, I really hope she picks up soon and don't feel silly for crying at the vets, I am exactly the same when mine are ill xx

Got a phone call a little while ago saying prim had died. They think gut stasis and some sort of rupture.

I'm absolutely broken.

So sorry to hear this.
I think sudden loss is so very hard, but it is clear you are a devoted owner and did everything possible for your lovely girl.
Huge hugs from Switzerland.

I'm so sorry :( poor little Prim. Well done for getting her to the vets and giving her a chance, you did the very best for her. Xx

I am so sorry. You did all you could for her, please don't think you could have done more. Prim had a lovely caring home with you. Sending you and your other piggys big hugs.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that Prim has passed over the Rainbow Bridge. She is pain free and popcorning away now. Don't blame yourself you did everything you could for her.

Just can't believe it, it was so sudden, and she was only just over 3 years old! Still in pieces about it.

The other two are very subdued. I can only find threads about bereavement relating to pigs left alone. Will the fact that their are still 2 make it easier for them? Katniss seems worse, but she's Prim's sister whereas I only adopted Finn about 10 months ago.

Oh my goodness, my heart goes out for you and your remaining piggies. very unsetting.

Well I guess they are use to have the 3 of them so I would probably use the teddy bear technique in any case.

Terribly sorry to hear of your issues. It's worth keeping a close eye on your other two.

Thanks for your support everyone.

Finn seems his usual cheerful self, but Katniss isn't doing great. She is eating and drinking but less than usual. She first had small, dry, tear-drop shaped poo so I gave her some cucumber to rehydrate. However now her poop is very squishy (not diarrhea, looks normal ish but when you touch it it is pure mush). Taken her off veg and syringe fed her some mashed pellets last night and will do again now. Any tips or advice? I'm hoping her eating will pick up and that will settle her stomach. I couldn't bear it if she went downhill too, after losing her sister Prim.

Would a new companion help her? She is not alone as she has Finn but she is missing Prim so much. I will do whatever needs doing to help her, but the last bonding was stressful for her.

Another question, sorry. Should I wash all the bedding to get rid of Prim's smell, or leave it while they grieve? The fleece pad thing in their main bed is still there from before Prim died on Tuesday.
