New plan, new plan! We're going back to square one and building a new cage
I found out what happened. The entire cage was a team effort and I wanted it built out of the waterproof plywood I'd ordered. But somebody cut the bottom out of untreated wood and used it, the rest of the cage was all plywood. Of course the untreated wood was going to mold and rot! I don't even know why that decisions was made. Makes no sense, I should have been around more for the cutting and building part.
I thought about painting it, asked around for some animal-friendly paint, but am facing a lot of problems with the shipping, painting process, and I fear the mold spores could have survived through my vinegar treatment. The spots I treated look iffy, I don't trust it. Thought about cutting out the bottom and replacing it, but I will never get rid of all of the material with the way it's installed. I might break parts of the cage as well.
So new cage it is! I ordered some more plywood, clear plastic for the windows, fittings. And just to be extra safe, the bottom will be made out of plastic.
It's uncomfortable that a mistake was made, but I'm feeling positive, and the pigs have been so good throughout all of this. They have been introduced to new surroundings multiple times now, and they're doing so good. They're comfortable, accepting, every morning they greet me with happy zoom-zooms and piggy talk.
So it continues!
At least we will have stuff for Midsummer fire next year
