Just been on to a well known " pre loved" site and found 52...yes 52 pages of skinny pigs for sale! AND in the animal welfare section!

Had a cull and messaged at least 6 who were looking to rehome explaining that if serious then to consider putting them up for adoption rather than selling.

Also messaged others who were stating " suitable for allergy suffers" as this is just incorrect and just reiterating here...

PLEASE PLEASE source your local rescues and adopt and rehome! !

Have a feeling a ton more skinnies are going to be abandoned designer pets this xmas :(

I am totally disgusted at hearing this! When will these stupid free sites forbid people advertising animals on there like they are clothes? I never look at them as it is just too upsetting. I hate the throw away attitude some people have towards animals.

Oh blimey, that is so worrying. Poor things will inevitably go to homes where they have no idea how tricky they can be to look after. My 2 have lost weight since the colder weather started and it is a battle to keep the room warm enough for them whilst not too hot that the heart pigs get fluid build up.

Poe's skin starts to suffer at this point with the dry heat/cold humidity so extra H spray and sudocrem handy atm.

Rant away were with you.......I'm soooo cross to hear this hun it makes my blood boil ! I really like skinny piggies myself but even with the knowledge ive built up about piggies I wouldn't want them at this stage as I know reading your posts that they need extra care, it's upsetting to think that people out their have skinny piggies and aren't giving them this care . :(

Oh how upsetting. I'm not surprised that they are so vunerable to being passed on though, poor pigs.

I would like to take in some rescue skinnies, but not till we have got the heating in this house sorted, dont they have to be kept at 21degrees? I feel so sorry for them. I have always worried that people get bored and put them outside in hutches :(

This just makes me want to :cen: ! Too many sites have done things like this! There are hundreds of people who treat innocent guinea pigs like they are clothes or shoes. I am truly disgusted.
It just makes me sick!

I thought about getting the skinny pig from the store where I picked up one of my pigs but I thought about it first and the fact that it's -25 C right now, I feel a skinny pig in Alberta would only be happy for two months of the year! Poor things! I have to use a space heater to keep the pig room at 24/25 degrees celsius so that my own pigs and birds don't get cold!

Anything below 18c they will get cold. More susceptible to catching URI and things then. It's awful to see them cold....they huddle themselves up and go VERY wrinkly and shiver.

Oh those poor animals! I almost adopted a beautiful skinny pig but I realised my house is pretty cold and we don't have a fire place and they would be upstairs in the pig room so the chances are she'd be cold. So I ended up not adopting her.

She was gorgeous but I'd rather adopt when I have a nice warm house. I wish people would think before they buy.

That's just awful! :(

Skinnies are beautiful, but I couldn't own any for a number of reasons. One is I turn my heating down/off at night so they would get too cold, two is they would require some sort of soft hypoallergenic bedding such as fleece or vetbed and that's a bit much work for me, and three is I always let my nails (not my piggies', just my own, haha) grow too long so I would be too scared of accidentally scratching their delicate skin.

What?! Since when is it ever okay to put suncream on your skinnies?! Well, that's the daily mail for you. :hb:

People do...It can be okay apparently-as in it won't hurt them 99% of the time..but personally I disagree with it. It's unnatural and cruel. I have never attempted, have no desire too.

I personally cannot stand wearing suncream myself. It's greasy and I hate the smell. I would never inflict something like that on an innocent little piggy. Skinnies should stay out of direct sunlight anyway!

All pigglys should...well all ANIMALS should! I wouldn't change my boys for the world but if I knew what I knew now.... I would never ever had supported the market for skinnies.

They need alot of love and care and I am happy and in a position to give it. ..some people get them realise that they can be extra work or allergic and hence... since they broke the news last feb...52 pages and more appearing

In one way I'm mad at the press because even though they are highlighting a problem they are also advertising these little ones to people who see pound signs in their eyes to make a quick buck as they are classed as exotics!

Very interesting article. I myself have never really fancied skinny pigs they are cute but they do need specialist care. I have always researched about any animal before I get one. Regardless of what they are .
It's frightening to think because of this fad so many piggies are going to end up in rescues. As for allergy sufferers. Well most people have not been positively tested for allergys and don't know what they are actually allergic too. My granddaughter is allergic to dogs cats not to small furrys or horses as you would expect. If you think you are allergic to furrys, buy a reptile, do your homework first ! Soo annoying. x

I feel really sorry for them, I see a lot of ads for baby skinnies locally to me, and they look like back yard breeder ads, always advertising new litters :(

The babies are very expensive though, and you would have through that that would put your average muppet off buying them, its hardly an impulse buy at £100 a piggie, you would think people might do more research before spending that kind of money!

I didn't know they went for so much money ! That awful but the average muppett would spend hundreds on a trophy dog or the latest cross breed with a posh name just to fit in. Most don't give a toss about the animals just there image. Annoying as hell. I could rant all day about the short falling of the human race. But I'm just a certified nutter ! x

It's disgusting. Some people are not even fit to look after a teddy bear let alone a living, breathing animal that requires care and attention!

I'm allergic to my boys I found out after getting them...but thats my fault for not checking...but I love them and wont ever give them up for something that's not their fault. I just take antihistamines every day! Although tonight it did not work ....I get severe hives neck to tummy button..oh well! Haha. In an hour I will look like a big stinging nettle victim!

Oh no. Poor mummy!

Poor you . U must really love your piggies. My granddaughter also had a bad allergy to cats and dogs as well as others, excema and asthma and registered with anafeletic shock, she has to be super careful. You too be careful would hate for you to be really ill. Annoying when the antihistamine doesn't work isn't it xx hope you don't get too poorly. Did you no that in most cases cat allergys are nothing to do with fur, it the saliva the cats excrete for grooming that causes issues, and even after the cat has moved out of a house the saliva lives on for a while, so you will still get allergic reactions. With dogs too it's the dander that causes the reaction not the fur ! x. May not be your piggies could be something you use or bedding or even a certain type of hay. It's really difficult to found out what causes reactions. Unless they test for it, and then it's only specifics that can be tested.

Indeed! I am severely allergic to cats.
FEL d 1 protein to be precise which as you correctly state is in their saliva. It's a protein. I am also allergic to horses and rabbits. Cats the worse though!

My boys don't aggravate me when I kiss their bare skin just if their claws scrape me or their hairy noses touch my face. Then I flair up. I have hayfever too but since handling all this hay I rarely have a problem these days with the hay I use.

I had excema when little and ashma but only triggered attacks if in close proximity to yes....cats!

Funny how excema, asthma and hayfever are all related.

I agree! How many times did it compare them to the Clangers?! And photos of the breeder explaining why they make fantastic pets! It's a disgrace. Another example of careless journalism.

Fortunately, the UK Skinny population appears to be stabilising - A number of breeders have retired, decided to concentrate their efforts on other breeds, or have reduced their number of Skinnies/ reduced the number of litters that they produce!

I believe that this is largely due to the financial implications of owning a large number of Skinnies, and the time required to care for a large number of Skinnies etc. . . However, Skinnies are difficult to breed, and there is a lack of interest - It would appear that either Skinnies are an 'acquired taste', and/or a large percentage of individuals realise that Skinnies do require specialist care!

Nevertheless, if bred, and raised correctly, you cannot make a profit - The price tags are quite justified! Skinnies that are offered for considerably less than £100, are typically poorly bred, are part of a mass breeding operation, or are ex-breeding/retired Skinnies etc. . .

Of course, I am hoping that the population will either continue to stabilise, or decline somewhat!

Not seen any skinny local to me, but always seeing guinea pigs on sale on these sights, tried to help one get homed by putting a link on here, just for it to be deleted, this adverts break my heart, so much for me trying to help one get a better home
